Genuine question: is there an average or above interest in the competition now? I ask because it's completely passed/is passing me by - I really could not give a toss, and certainly won't watch a single game, or won't even do more than glance at newspaper reports - and I can't quite believe the winners will feel like it's a genuine trophy. But maybe that's me or a tiny minority. What's the general impression?

For me the one legged ties have made it more interesting than usual, it's a bit like a club version of a world cup.

Would've been even better but there's been a general lack of quality - Barca aren't up to much any more, us and Juventus got knocked out earlier, and even City screwed up against Lyon.

So the only really big tie will end up being in the final. But overall I've really enjoyed it.

Yeah, this is pretty much the club world cup the way it should be. There is an argument to be made for keeping one-legged ties in the future; at least clubs don't have to worry about the away goal rule, which is honestly pretty arbitrary. There have been no penalty shoot-outs and extra time games so far (hopefully there won't be in the final); there is something refreshingly simple about just beating the opponent in front of you to progress.

I know they are very different players but based on this game I would rather have auouar on our team than Thiago, although I'm aware Aouar and Keita seem to be similar players

Yup. Younger and fits the profile of signings which we usually target.

If psg get beat I can laugh at the oil club failure and how much of a tit neymar is and how much a failure pep was at Bayern. If Bayern get beat I can laugh at how they blew their chance to get level on titles with us and how we're still literally better than any German side. All good.

Not going to lie . Watchabillity has gone up 100% now that City, Real and Barca are out.

Every game feels like a victory now, whichever side wins!

Yep. Made this argument tonight to a friend. There is no losing here. Even better if they all get COVID.

I’m loving it. Great entertainment and the 1 leg has added a whole new dimension. More chance for an underdog to cause an upset.

Never thought about the Pep angle at Bayern. Essentially Bayern wins the treble the year before Pep arrived. Now, this is the second treble that too by a manager in his first season using some of the core members of the team which Pep had - Thiago, Neuer, Muller, Lewandowski, Alaba, Kimmich.

There was too much tinkering and 'cleverness' whilst Pep was at Bayern.

Bayern in recent years have been at their best as an uncomplicated attacking team as we're seeing once again now.

That was probably Benitez biggest problem, too much tinkering. A lot of times he focused more on the opposition than the team.
The CL final in 2005 encapsulates that very well.
We would have probably won it in 2007 as well if he started with Crouch and didn't sub Mascherano.

*if started Bellamy

The thing about 2007 was that at the time we all thought ok now we actually have a good team, we deserve to be here (well I did anyway), but we still had Zenden and Pennant in the team!

Not sure how much you can blame Benitez for having players like that or how much you can praise him for getting there with them. A bit of both I suppose.

Thing is, with Pennant probably crossing the ball into the box around 30 times during that game, you'd think having someone like Crouch in there would cause some problems.

I see where you're going with that but Bellamy was on fire for a couple years in that period and for me was always the right choice against Milan's ageing backline.

Plus Pennant's floaty balls to no-one were useless.

Yeah, maybe. We'll never know I guess. But starting Zenden...wow.

Zenden played down the left. KUYT was up front on his own. Bellamy would have been perfect.

Having been following the recent games, just curious, how good is Sevilla's Diego Carlos (who seems to be highly rated and been linked with bigger clubs)?

Diego Carlos stinking it out again there. Fucking rubbish. Let's hope one of our rivals signs him

Yeah, I actually quite like the 1 leg knock out format, buy it'll never stay obv. Made better for city losing. Just wish we were still in it as we would have made final more than likely and only team that could defend, would be big favourites

I am surprised Liverpool fans after experiencing the great Anfield nights are thinking one-legged ties at neutral venues are better.

It is nice having competitive football in summer especially given that travel is restricted. It is also nice watching the Mancs humiliated. But this better than two-legged format, no chance. This has a slightly more competetive international cup or emirates cup (whatever that bs pre season cup is) vibe than a proper champions league.
