Not convinced we're signing Wirtz as a false nine, I think he'll play where Szobo does now. I don't think Szobo is good enough in that position and I'm not sure Slot or Dom think he is either. Slot said recently Szobo sees himself as an 8, so I wonder if he'll rotate with Macca more. I also think that Slot has made enough comments about wanting to play with a 9 to think he'd prefer an actual striker there.

I worry about this too, but maybe we'll see Gravy and Macca rotate, Macca and Szlob, Szlob and Wirtz, and Wirtz and Gakpo / Diaz. It feels like we are building a squad with lots of different options / combinations, which is nice, especially considering how we've burnt out towards the end of this season.

I can't see how that would work. We would lose a lot of physicality in the middle if we replace szobo with wirtz. A midfield of gravy, Mac and wirtz would get bullied a lot. Maybe when he's older and more physically developed, but right now he has to go in the front 3.

With 3 years left on his contract he's not going to run it down and we're not letting him go (regardless of him saying he's not going anywhere) so unless it's a £100m+ offer we're going to have the best MF in the PL by a mile next season.

Can't agree with this. Firstly those three would dance around half the PL without any problem at all. Neither Gravy nor Macca ever get bullied and Wirtz has a reputation as a wiry Scottish Terrier with Mo'esque feet.

We've mainly played a version of 4-2-3-1 though, and that is usually Slot's preferred starting positions in terms of tactics.

Wirtz will probably start as the 10, but his flexibility will be fantastic for us in terms of everything Slot wants us to do in both possession and when defending.

I wonder what changes Slot might attempt with our midfield in the long run. During his past managerial stints, he always had midfielders who contribute directly offence wise.

At Alkmaar, it was Koopmeiners (42 apps 16 goals 3 assists) and during the title winning season at Feyenoord, it was Szymanski (40 apps 10 goals 7 assists) & Koku (46 apps 12 goals 5 assists)
