Florian and the (Slot) Machine

The past can be used to a degree but the parameters have to be current manager, team, sporting director and tactics.

The player part is individual and is nearly impossible to compare. But Wirtz has the correct attitude, skills, work rate and suitability to our team/tactics and desire to succeed. Can’t ask for much more.

Initially with Riera I thought "We might have got ourselves a player here", but he tailed off before too long and was typical of far too many of the signings we were making in those days - a "near enough is good enough" player who, er, wasn't in the end.

From a recent interview his dad made with Der Spiegel:

On whether the conversation with Arne Slot was decisive: "You could say that. Arne Slot was able to convince Florian on a sporting level. He is also a very pleasant person. Florian's best coaches were always those who gave him a lot of freedom. And those with the greatest empathy have also reached Florian. He finds the game in England interesting because it thrives on pace and dynamism. Arne Slot presented his playing philosophy, the team tactics in possession and pressing, and how Florian can develop his strengths in it. That made a decisive impression on Florian. The training conditions in Liverpool were also totally impressive. Plus, Florian is now at a good age to move abroad. Once you have a family, you are no longer as independent."

Him and the guy we eventually flogged to Chelsea (Not Torres!!!)

No, you have it right, the guy with the daftest hairstyle in LFC history (before Harvey first arrived). We signed so many "nearly men" around that time. It wasn't that they were poor players (Meireles for example had some decent games for us), just that they weren't true Liverpool standard.

Love Frimpong already. Seems like an amazing guy
I get that and if I was manager would definitely look to have someone like him in the squad…

…but I personally find his whole joker persona / extrovert entertainer / uber positivity irritating…(I’m sorry to say)
