Florian and the (Slot) Machine

Initially with Riera I thought "We might have got ourselves a player here", but he tailed off before too long and was typical of far too many of the signings we were making in those days - a "near enough is good enough" player who, er, wasn't in the end.
Actually he was very good for us I thought and in typical Rafa way...he decided to have a bust up with him.

I think anyone that calls Riera Rlrubbish or ordinary in the team he played for us has lost their memory. At the time he one of few progressive ball carriers we had. and before people go crazy about Macho/SG/Xabi/Torres - well that combination won...fuck all.

We are so incredibly lucky to have you on site. Without you the rest of us might never have realised how brilliant Riera and Curtis were/are.

He was rubbish and one goal in a losing cup final doesn’t change that. Fuck me. He was part of the problem. Players not good enough to ever sign for us being remembered as good. Ffs.

Reira was at or around our level at that point of time. Of course he wasn't a world beater but neither were we. The fact that he was replaced by Stuart Downing says it all really.

I am not sure why we are going back to the past and comparing those players against the standards we are setting today.

If Curtis Jones was put in the firing line though I will say he is not good enough for our squad. I would argue that he had stagnated for a good 2-3 seasons now. To me he just about makes the squad partly because he is English, he is versatile and he does a job, but only just.
