Pretty much this.

Felt so much anticipation backin 2002 before the WC. Then he was injured and I thought he'd make the difference when he got back. Instead he was largely wasted, caught up in a political war with Lampard which would never have been a discussion if it had been based on the pitch. Struggled under the suffocating style with Sven.

It's been a fabulous career but you can't escape the feeling it's also been largely unfulfilled on the international stage.

Same for all of them especially the top English players, they have all had their international careers wasted with England, there must be a fair bit of regret there looking back for them, sorry to bore the forum again but if only England players had cool heads and a pair of balls when it came to penalty shoot outs, it could have been oh so different for Stevie and the rest of them... a World Cup Final in 06 maybe? a Euro Championship title in 04?

If but if but if but, i know, penalties are so important though! they can have a massive impact on history and how we look back and perceive it, just look at our history with them.

Zinedine Zidane has claimed that Liverpool will feel a massive benefit from Steven Gerrard’s decision to retire from international football, feeling that the Reds could see the same benefit that Manchester United got from Paul Scholes decision to quit England.

Gerrard announced his retirement from England duty after accomplishing 114 caps, ending his career as captain of Roy Hodgson’s side in their disappointing World Cup campaign in Brazil this summer.

The search is on for a new England captain and most seem to be in the agreement that it was best for club, country and player that Gerrard stepped down from his role, with the Liverpool skipper himself under the belief that his body cannot cope with the rigours of both domestic and international football anymore.

Zidane has now joined that chorus those who deem the best move for Gerrard and feels that Liverpool will reap the rewards from seeing their captain dedicate his efforts purely towards club football from now on.

Zidane was quoted in the Daily Star as having said, “It is a big decision – but I can understand it and I think it will be good for Liverpool.

“Liverpool showed past season that they are close to achieving something special – and it is so important they have their captain available.

“They are back in the Champions League this season and as you get older, you have to accept you can’t play every game for club and country. I am sure it was not an easy decision for Steven, but I think it is the right one for himself and Liverpool.

“I remember how surprised people were when Paul Scholes retired from playing for England – but Manchester United saw the benefit of that.

“He was winning Premier League titles until his late 30s, and now Steven doesn’t have the responsibility of playing for England, you feel he can replicate it with Liverpool.”

Steven Gerrard: Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers hails decision
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says Steven Gerrard's international retirement is "great" for the club.
The 34-year-old midfielder, who captained England to a World Cup group-stage exit, quit the national team this week after 114 caps.
"Liverpool is everything to him and no doubt missing international football will make him fresher," Rodgers said.
"He will be ready to be at optimum levels, so for us at Liverpool it is great."
Gerrard said it was too much physically to play international and club football, with Liverpool in the Champions League this season.
Rodgers added: "I spent a lot of time talking to him about it because I know how much it meant to him to captain his country."

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed his intention to offer Steven Gerrard a one-year contract extension after the Liverpool captain’s retirement from international football. Gerrard’s present deal expires in June 2015 and reaching a new agreement is expected to be a formality.

“I am very happy that Steven is now going to commit to Liverpool and I am sure that [his contract] is something that we will look at,” Rodgers said. “He is in really good condition and I’m sure it is something that will happen at some point. You never want to leave players with not too long to go on their contract. A lot has gone on at the club over the course of the summer. It is something I am sure will get sorted.”
