Indeed, last season would never have happened without him, such an unsung hero, and still bafflingly underrated by the majority of the nation, thankfully Liverpool fans have a clue what they're talking about!

England has a bit of previous when it comes to not appreciating players in fairness.

Under appreciating good players (Henderson, Scholes, etc) and over appreciating players who aren't quite so good (Wilshere, Rooney, etc)

Yeah. I'm repeating myself now, but the values promoted within the broad national football conversation (ie 'passion' - which means running around a lot, steaming into tackles and other stuff described tediously as 'Churchillian') mean that players who play intelligently are criminally under-appreciated.

Had Lawrensen and Hansen both been English, Lawrensen would have been rated higher.

It's quite a turnaround ... Glad we were patient with him, and LUCKY when it counted re: Fulham

To be fair, I'm not sure too many fans (me included) were that patient with him early on.

He's a good reminder of the need to give young players time to grow into the side.

Good old bulldog spirit.

I find that quite a bizarre viewpoint BBI, Hansen would have been deemed to better player no matter what their nationalities quite simply because he obviously was. Lawrenson was an excellent player but Hansen was our greatest ever defender which; considering we've had the luxury of Hyypia, Hughes, Yeats, Lawrenson etc is quite some accolade.

I think he was alluding to playing styles not their previous nationalities??

I was indeed. Lawrenson was the sort of throw himself into tackles backs to the wall centre back that would have been loved. Hansen would have been viewed with suspicion. That's if they were both English.

EDIT: I don't mean by us. I mean by your average Engerlund fan.

I still maintain that we would have won the League had he not been given a red card against City.

Well, of course, Lawro is English. *runs and hides*

Oh. Well he's still wrong. The English love a good ol' Blood-And-Thunder type centre back like Tony Adams and John Terry but Bobby Moore is still held in much higher esteem and he was more in the mould of Hansen.

I guarantee you if you ask most England fans now - particularly those who never saw Moore play - they would not describe Bobby Moore that way. They may be wrong, but they wouldn't. Terry Butcher and his bloody head are what most England fans want from a centre back. Part of the reason Moore is held up is because he won the World Cup, and because he shut out Pele in 1970. Not because he was a ball playing centre back who started moves off.

Hansen wasn't exactly a ball playing CB either BBI although he was very comfortable in possession. The main reason he remains peerless amongst CB's in Britain over the last few decades is that his reading of the game, his pace, his temprament (never panicked), his awareness of others etc were all exceptional. He did make forays into the opposition half from time-to-time but much more often played a simple ball to Souness, McDermott, Case etc.

Heading and whole-hearted tackles would seem to be 2 prerequisites of all CB's but Hansen was (relatively) shite in the air and hardly ever thundered into a tackle (he never had to as he read the game so well).

Bobby Moore was very similar in many ways to Hansen although IMO Hansen was the better player. Moore gets more plaudits because he was English and was captain the only time the won the world cup.

I agree that England fans love a good "tough nut" at the back ala Terry, Adams, Pearce etc and there is always room in a decent team for a good old-fashioned CB but the Hansen, Moore, Desailly type should be what every team looks to produce.

Sorry, I'm quite busy today and I'm aware that the above reply is all over the place but I don't have time to make a more cogent argument.

Ye are both basically saying the same thing anyway.

On a side note, Rio Ferdinand is another example of an English CB who didn't go to ground easily or lunged into last ditch tackles.

Back to Henderson, what's the term Doc Mac uses again to describe his over zealous celebrations?

Well some of us do - Me less so than most on this site... Still I was bang on about Hendo. I knew he'd come good and I've said it before and I will say it again - My favourite LFC player at the moment. What a guy! 😎
