Terriers swoop for duo
Striker moves on loan, left-back signs permanent deal

Skysports.comrevealed earlier in the week that the Terriers were in talks to sign Liverpool forward Eccleston on loan, and he moves to the Galpharm on a one-month deal until 2nd March.

The 19-year-old has made two appearances for the Reds this season, in the Carling Cup against Arsenal and in the Premier League against Fulham, and goes straight into the squad for the game against Yeovil on Saturday.

Heffernan, meanwhile, moves to Huddersfield on a permanent contract until the end of the season with the option to extend his deal.

The 29-year-old left-back moves from Australian side Central Coast Mariners, pending international clearance.
Qualities

Town manager Lee Clark was very pleased to add two players to his squad as Huddersfield push for promotion from League One.

He told the club's official website: "We have monitored Nathan for a long time and have had him watched by a number of scouts on many occasions.

"I have been to watch him myself along with the coaching staff and it is clear he has a lot of good qualities. He has real pace and can play anywhere across the front line, whether that is as a striker or on either wing.

"Dean needs to have a good run of games from now until the end of our season to cement his place in the World Cup squad so he has a huge incentive to come into Europe and play well.

"He has a lot of experience behind him and possesses a lot of qualities. He is a very fit lad, a real athlete and has very good pace. He should be a very big asset for us."

I liked what I've seen from Eccleston. I hope this isn't like all the other players we've loaned out (ie the end of his career here)

Kelly did well out on loan, and is still at the club. So he could have a future here. I doubt it, but you never know.

Re: EcclestonHuddersfield have completed the signing of striker Nathan

Skysports.com understands that Liverpool teenager Vincent Weijl is poised to return to Holland.

The Reds signed the attacking midfielder from AZ Alkmaar in July 2008 and he is a member of the Premier League side's reserves.

But Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is understood to be prepared to allow Weijl to leave on loan in order to build first-team experience.

An unnamed Dutch club have made approach for the 19-year-old and he could therefore be moving back to the Eredivisie.

When Weijl first arrived at Anfield expectation was high that he would develop into a major talent and Benitez will hope that a loan will assist his progress.

If Weijl is a major talent, Lucas is the heir to Cryuff...

Oh wait...

He has been a bit underwhelming every time I've seen him

I can't believe they've signed Dean Heffernan. He's fucking rubbish.

they are huddersfield... pretty crap team in a pretty crap division.

However i agree that Heffernan is turd. A lot of the A-League players that get a lot of attention i find to be rather dreadful 80% of the time.

It's a good division GT with some very talented players, some of whom will appear in the premier league soon, including Jordan Rhodes who Eccleston will hopefully be partnering up front for Huddersfield.

Don't forget that the team in 2nd place in that league have won at Old Trafford this season (against a strongish United team) and drew away to a full strength Spurs team.

Eccleston off to a flyer in Terriers win

Yeovil Town 0 - 1 Huddersfield Town

Debutant Nathan Eccleston scored the only goal of the game as Huddersfield recorded a 1-0 victory at Yeovil.

The on-loan Liverpool forward fired the Terriers in front in the 23rd minute, firing into an open net after Jordan Rhodes had been denied by Glovers keeper Alex McCarthy.

Recall him!!! He's obviously ready!

Young Premier League hotshot Nathan Eccleston trained with Charlton on Wednesday morning and is set to sign on loan from Liverpool until the end of the season.

The Manchester-born 20-year-old has made seven appearances for the Reds this term and has played regularly in the Europa League.

The paperwork on the deal is due to be completed on Thursday morning, making Eccleston available for the Addicks for Saturday's clash with promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Chairman Michael Slater said: "A number of clubs were keen to sign Nathan on loan during the transfer window, most of which were in higher divisions, so we had to move very quickly and we're delighted to have captured his signature.

"He's very highly rated and has already played Premier League and European football this season, so he'll be a fantastic addition to our squad."

Slater added that the club was continuing its thorough search to find a new manager, and that the recruitment process was progressing well.

Eccleston, who has represented England U17s, has appeared for Premier League giants Liverpool seven times in 2010/11, featuring in five Europa League ties.

He made his debut for Liverpool in October 2009, and joined Huddersfield on loan 12 months ago, when he scored once in 12 appearances (four starts) for the Yorkshire club.

That goal came on his debut in a 1-0 win at Yeovil Town, and he made his final appearance for Lee Clark's side as a substitute in the League One play-off semi-final second leg at Millwall, a tie the Lions won 2-0 to seal their place at Wembley against a Swindon Town side that beat new club Charlton on penalties.

This season, Eccleston has seen regular action for Liverpool in the Europa League, featuring from the bench against Macedonian side ZFK Rabotnicki Kometal in late July as the Reds qualified for the competition proper.

His Anfield bow came against Romanian side Steaua Bucharest in a 4-1 win, and he featurd against Napoli as interval substitute Steven Gerrard notched a hat-trick to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 win.

More experience came in Liverpool's return match at Steaua Bucharest, and his first start in Liverpool colours came in the 0-0 draw against Dutch side FC Utrecht on December 15th.

That was his last first-team outing for the Reds, and he also has four reserve goals for league-leaders Liverpool this term.

I still wonder why Roy deemed him the most promising of our attacking reserves (ahead of Pacheco etc).

I've never seen anything from the lad to suggest he'll be anything better than Championship class.

Simply because he is English!

Didn't some of the foreign lads complain that Roy is giving the English lads preference?

"It's a new challenge, a new experience and a new start for me, and I'm happy to be here," Ecclestone, who is in the Charlton squad for Saturday's important League One trip to Sheffield Wednesday, told the official website.

"I've been looking to get out on loan for a little while, but obviously Liverpool were still in the Europa League and I had been playing in that competition regularly.

"But come January, I just thought it was best that I got out and started playing some games.

"There were a number of teams interested in me, but Jonjo persuaded me to come and sign for Charlton."

"It's been surprising," said the Manchester-born attacker. "I started this season and I wasn't sure if I was going to stay with the first team after pre-season or go back with the reserves, which might have made my loan move come around quicker.

"Roy Hodgson came in and he liked what he saw. He wanted to work with me and for me to be part of the squad, so I feel like I've benefited from being with them this season and it's resulted in the seven appearances I've made.

"I think that's an achievement at a team like Liverpool. Although we are not doing that well this season, it's still a hard team to break into.

"In the past, it's not always been the case to put so-called youngsters in," Nathan continued. "I think this season it's a case of 'if you are good enough, you are old enough'.

"Sometimes experience comes ahead of that, but the likes of Martin Kelly, Jonjo, myself and Danny Wilson have all done well when we have been included and shown we are good enough players and hopefully have bright futures ahead of ourselves."

"I'm quick, a good dribbler, attacking and very direct," he said. "I would say I'm a good finisher, but I'm not a targetman.

"I'm not someone who will get hold of the ball and link-up play; I'm more about running behind full-backs and centre-halves and causing them problems.

"I'd say I'm very direct and a lively target player.

"A lot of people regard me as a winger because that's where I played for Liverpool, but when I played for the reserves I've been a striker," noted Eccleston, who has netted four goals for the table-topping Reds' second string this season. "I think Charlton have offered me the chance to come here and be a striker.

"I want to get some games under my belt, score goals - which is how strikers are judged - and I want to make more of a name for myself in the Football League."

Now, with his new side Charlton poised for a promotion charge in 2011, the striker can't wait to get started.

"I was saying to everyone at home it's like being on that first day at school trying to make new friends and that type of stuff," he admitted after taking part in his first training session on Wednesday.

"It was a good short and sharp session and the intensity was high - I enjoyed it. It was good to get it under my belt.

"One of the reasons I've come to Charlton is that it is a good club which is fighting for promotion.

"I've come here to score goals and help the team go up. By doing that, it will probably benefit me and the club."

CHARLTON loan sensation Nathan Eccleston marked his Valley debut with a vital goal to seal victory over Plymouth in Chris Powell’s first game as manager.

The Liverpool teenager, contracted to ply his trade in SE7 for the remainder of the season, came off the bench to put the result beyond doubt in the 90th minute.

Victory finally left home fans happy for the first time in months and Eccleston hopes he can soon earn a place in Powell’s starting XI.

He said: “I’ve been looking to get out on loan for a while and Charlton have shown an interest before the loan came about, as well as a few other teams.

“I was speaking to Jonjo Shelvey and he was a big influence on me coming to Charlton.

“He filled me with great words about the club and the supporters, so it was an easy decision.

“Even before there was mention of me going out on loan, Jonjo used to speak about Charlton and he was full of praise for the club. He played a big part in me coming here.

“I’ve come to play games. Obviously I want to be starting these games but you can’t expect to just walk into any team.

“You’ve got to show hard work and determination and in the two appearances I’ve made so far off the bench, I think I’ve done well, so hopefully if I work hard in training this week I’ll get a start next week.â€

Eccleston agreed to join the club without even knowing who his boss would be because Keith Peacock was in temporary charge of the Reds when the loan deal was finalised.

But the young striker feels Powell has done a great job in making an early impression on his new squad and looks forward to working under him this season.

He explained: “It was a great occasion with the new manager coming in.

“What he’s done here so far for the club has made him a legend.

“I met Chris for the first time on Saturday at Sheffield Wednesday.

“He came into the dressing room and introduced himself to all of us as he was taking over on Monday and that was our first training session with him.

“I’d never spoken to him directly but obviously I knew about him as a player before.

“Training was good. He came in with how he wanted football to be played, it was positive and direct attacking football, which is what the fans want to see.â€

Eccleston added: “It’s exciting not just for me but for the players who were here before under numerous managers before.

“It’s always good to come to a team who want to play the right way, which is good for everybody.â€

Powell was equally impressed by Eccleston’s contribution afterwards.

The manager said: “I think he made lot of people sit up and take notice.

“He scored a tenacious goal, a fantastic finish with his left foot
and let’s hope there’s more of that to come.

“Nathan came in after the Spurs game and naturally was a sub because the first team did quite well at Spurs, even though they lost.

“He came on last week and impressed me up at Sheffield Wednesday.

“Obviously he’s come from a club who are looking for him to develop and become a better player and you can see he’s got some Premier League touches in him.

“But he’s a young player and you can’t expect too much just because he’s come from Liverpool.

“I said to him toda when he was coming on to go and make a statement to me, to the players and to the supporters and to prove he deserved to be here in this short spell.â€
