If it meant strengthening other key areas first yes. I'm not sure he will be anyway. We will be signing a CM soon.
Not really a DM though. So it will be Lucas or Spearing. My preference is Lucas.

[/quote]I havnt seen Banega but I think if (were assuming hes better than Lucas) everyone were fit AND we were playing at home against a non top 6 side, Lucas would be on my bench.
Away and against top sides id have him next to Banaga as he is a far better FAR better defensive/holding type of player than Meireles.
I'll be honest though i think hed play in the middle a lot more than most would think. I think Gerrard and Raul would be the two rotating.
I dunno though.
I guess if we signed a DM which i dont think we will then Lucas would play less.

If we could hypothetically sign him and he'd also be willing to hypothetically play for us and also hypothesising that he may be one of those rare hypothetical Argentinians who hypothetically ENJOY living in the North West of England and he could hypothetically settle and earn his place in the team then yes I would have him in front of Lucas. Lucas shouldn't be sold for the sake of it unless it was or silly money that we couldn't turn down. We will find it hard to replace someone as consistent as he is for the amount we would receive for him.

Also, wanting to replace Lucas with players some of us haven't even seen play is a risky game.
I would be confident that the majority on here aren't that well up on their Ligue 1. Yeah we'd know the players and have a understanding of who is good and higly rated but still .Hell, Bunnyman is meant to be a chief scout over there and even he admits not watching it week in week out.

Roopy and Bologna are our serie A experts and LTW seems very familiar with the Italian league too. This is just my opinion of course. There is probably loads of others who watch a lot of european football. Zlatan, KHL, Hansern, etc but i'm not going to pretend i''ve seen Matuidi (eg) several times or that he could/should replace Lucas.

Now La Liga is a different ball game altogether. For me anyway. I'm genuinely interested in that where I wouldn't care for the french league ( for example) at all.

Wonder what the reaction would be if someone started the same thread but the player's name wasn't Lucas, it was say Gerrard, Johnson or Suarez?

Why can we not just get behind the lad? he's had his best season to date, is still only 24, and is looking like a quality midfielder from what i've seen.

I don't feel comfortable with fellow Liverpool supporters having this witch hunt against one of our players. It's as if people want him to fail.

I would hope that we were looking to improve other areas first though. Also we need to off load all the excess baggage. I am praying to the football gods that we get Mata as a left sided attacking option as he looks like a diamond in the rough and he will be able to improve with us. So for me, I would keep Lucas (even though I voted 'wont be arsed') because he wants to produce for us and looks to be committed to the cause and when we get CL football next season then we can start this debate over. 😀

We'd be in a much better position with a dominant figure like Javi Martinez and I reckon he'll fetch a fee for about the same ammount as Oncy would sell Lucas for.

Martinez isn't really a defensive midfielder though. He'd be competing with Meireles more than Lucas.

Well it's clear that you rate the lad highly hence your stance on this subject.

As a LFC fan i want to see us back winning trophies again, and basically i don't think we'll be able to do this with players like Lucas as first team regulars. It seems we've got a fair amount of money to spend, hopefully Kenny will have a top DM lined up.

Maybe i've just been spoilt after having the pleasure of watching quality CM'S like Didi, Mascher, Alonso and Stevie in recent years....

Indeed I don't think it's witch hunt as Cellus suggests particularly, I just think Lucas polarises opinions more than most.
Case in point here is that Cellus sees him as "quality" player, whereas I, and others, freely admit he is much improved, and I really hope the improvement continues, but he is no more, or less, than an average sort of a player.
I don't want him gone unless someone does offer silly money , but we want need someone who has a few more dimensions.
Lucas does not do a lot wrong, but he does not do anything particularly well , which just makes him a bit......... meh, and makes him a bit of a steady eddie.
He has good ratings as he played a lot last season, as he did not have a lot of competition most of the time due to other players being huge disappointments or injured or finding their feet.

If we all had it in for him, then he'd not of got close to being voted player of the season. It's just a case of people knowing he's improved but yet still thinking we need better.

Hopefully Kenny sees it this way as well.

Yes, i think Lucas is a good player and ever improving.

Of course you want to see us winning trophies again, that goes without saying but i don't see the need to single out Lucas as if to say if he's in the team we don't win the league? That's just nonsense.
Besides, are LFC really equipped for a Title challenge with or without Lucas in the side? I have my doubts on that front.

As for this 'we can do better than Lucas' argument...you can pick out players throughout the team and say we could do better. If we were to bring in Vidic, A.Cole, Xavi and Messi...they'd be better than say Skrtel, Aurelio, Meireles and Kuyt.

Lucas wasn't given a new long-term contract for the fun of it... He'll play a big role for us next season and seasons after that - and rightly so in my view.

If people don't rate Lucas, that's perfectly fine, each to their own, but at the same time i think it's unfair and needless to single out Lucas like this.
