"Players" like Lucas.

We've got too many average players in our squad, it's just that out of all of them Lucas gets by far the most game time.

What's that mean? Is it the same as "Managers" like Benitez ?

Aiming for my soft spot i see Sunny.

E.G. he's not the only one i'd like to see at the very least reduced to a minor squad playing role.
Does anyone actually want Lucas to be in the first team come the start of the season?
Yes.
On the performances of last season I dont see why he should or would be dropped.
Premiership proven, still young and improving, playing in the 1st team for the brazil national side and when a player like ramires is worth 20mil I don't see why Lucas would be any less as he is a better player IMO

I agree with every word vlad has said with regards to lucas' attributes with that said;
our squad is piss poor
our squad is paper thin
our squad is filled top to bottom with players on high wages but contribute next to fuck all

I don't think lucas is on a high wage (and if he is he certainly justifies compared to say cole)
we should be attempting to strengthen our squad not weaken it, there are LOADS of players who deserve the push before lucas.
If a 'daft' offter for lucas comes in, then by all means sell, however we shouldn't be looking to sell for anything less than 12m mainly because we wont be able to replace him with anything less than 12m.

Is there any need for this thread and why is it always Lucas that's in the firing line?

Wonder what the reaction would be if someone started the same thread but the player's name wasn't Lucas, it was say Gerrard, Johnson or Suarez?

Why can we not just get behind the lad? he's had his best season to date, is still only 24, and is looking like a quality midfielder from what i've seen.

I don't feel comfortable with fellow Liverpool supporters having this witch hunt against one of our players. It's as if people want him to fail.

Indeed I don't think it's witch hunt as Cellus suggests particularly, I just think Lucas polarises opinions more than most.
Case in point here is that Cellus sees him as "quality" player, whereas I, and others, freely admit he is much improved, and I really hope the improvement continues, but he is no more, or less, than an average sort of a player.
I don't want him gone unless someone does offer silly money , but we want need someone who has a few more dimensions.
Lucas does not do a lot wrong, but he does not do anything particularly well , which just makes him a bit......... meh, and makes him a bit of a steady eddie.
He has good ratings as he played a lot last season, as he did not have a lot of competition most of the time due to other players being huge disappointments or injured or finding their feet.

regards
I didn't say he was quality or it was a witch hunt, I merely pointed out that he has shown he can play in the premiership and can hold a place in the team. He has been able to hold that place ahead of the likes of a Poulsen for instance with poor to average performances and I think he has improved loads. So because he has proven himself lets keep him and improve other areas first as we do have a couple of central midfield options.

Has anyone person, player or manager, generated as much debate on this forum as Lucas?

No. Well, apart from some posters but don't even go there.

Bit in bold. I agree with. I wouldn't sell him for £12m though. That's a realistic value on him not a daft one. I doubt we'd replace him for £12m.

20million is not daft. We can only replace him with Henderson with 20 million. So 30 million is daft and we have plenty of choices with 30 million unless we dump it on another Carroll.

Henderson isn't a holding mid. 20 and 30 million is completely daft for Lucas. Silly season now takes place in Daftland.

Ah yes, 20 million for Downing is daft. So is 20 million for Henderson.

Because most of the papers and some ex players said so. Even 16 is daft. When 16 million for Young is about right.

that's what I meant, my idea of 'daft' is 15m-20m

one had a 5 year contract, and the other had 1 year.

Anyone fancy a laugh on twatter? Like "sky españa reporting lfc have accepted bid of £40 mil plus marcelo for lucas from real madrid." an then pray it comes true.

I'd keep him unless he attracts a bid of £13M+. Which he won't.

The simple truth is, we've got more pressing outgoings to be working on this summer. Lucas is worth having around for another season.

Nobody has said we need WC players in every position, but when we have a first team regular who would struggle to get into the likes of Everton, Newcastle and Spurs sides, then maybe it becomes clear why people want better.

Well it's clear that you rate the lad highly hence your stance on this subject.

As a LFC fan i want to see us back winning trophies again, and basically i don't think we'll be able to do this with players like Lucas as first team regulars. It seems we've got a fair amount of money to spend, hopefully Kenny will have a top DM lined up.

Maybe i've just been spoilt after having the pleasure of watching quality CM'S like Didi, Mascher, Alonso and Stevie in recent years....
Yes, i think Lucas is a good player and ever improving.

Of course you want to see us winning trophies again, that goes without saying but i don't see the need to single out Lucas as if to say if he's in the team we don't win the league? That's just nonsense.
Besides, are LFC really equipped for a Title challenge with or without Lucas in the side? I have my doubts on that front.

As for this 'we can do better than Lucas' argument...you can pick out players throughout the team and say we could do better. If we were to bring in Vidic, A.Cole, Xavi and Messi...they'd be better than say Skrtel, Aurelio, Meireles and Kuyt.

Lucas wasn't given a new long-term contract for the fun of it... He'll play a big role for us next season and seasons after that - and rightly so in my view.

If people don't rate Lucas, that's perfectly fine, each to their own, but at the same time i think it's unfair and needless to single out Lucas like this.

This forum will go into meltdown when Lucas starts the first game of the season for us. He's here, doing a job and steadily improving. Can't fault his attitude, work ethic or mentality. How many other players can you say about that?

There's about 10 other players to be sold first before we can even consider selling Lucas at an inflated fee as the orignal post suggested. It's not gonna happen, so instead of all the whining support the lad. He deserves it!

The forum will not do anything of the kind, there are plenty of other players in the squad about whom the same things could be said as you list above, and we would be nuts to turn down such an offer for Lucas *if* (which was kinda the point of the thread - check out the title) one were made. Posts like this and those who rush to support it are a caricature of the debate. Check out what Vlad's said above for a true summary of the views of those of us who don't think going to the other extreme from Brendan's "cnut" jibes makes any sense either.

What suprises me is that you rate Lucas as a good DM, yet you never had any time for Mascher when he was playing there.

Well said JJ.

I think everyone will be behind Lucas "if" he does start next season, still doesn't change the fact that some of us feel we need better.

Yeah you're right Sunny we'll all be hoping he fucks up and we lose, just so we can say "i told you so"!
