Job security - arne

I'm not entirely convinced he's doomed yet.

With the general poor standard of the league this season, top 4 is still in play.

It's still possible (though unlikely) that we could win a trophy.

If Slot gets to the end of the season with top 4 and a trophy then it's not unthinkable that the club would give him another chance.

I think you have short memory, we could do a hell of a lot worse than we're currently doing.
We have a way better squad and starting 11 than under Hodgson, or Rodgers final year. You could argue that those teams were playing at their level. This group of players should be playing much better football.

I agree they should, but it could definitely be worse, and a new manager might do that. It's always a risk.

I'm not saying Slot is doing well enough, but the solution is not always just change it and assume it will be better, most managerial changes don't improve things in the long run.

All true that. I think its the lack of intensity and direction that's getting to me. In Klopp's first couple of years our results were pretty average a lot of the time, but you got the sense the players had bought into a vision, and we worked our socks off.

On top of that its the lack of boldness or faith in players thats annoying me. Playing 5 central midfielders when we have 2 wingers sitting on the bench. Why not just give Ngumoha the faith to start at Fulham - he's been the most exciting player whenever he's come on. Even Rodgers threw Sterling in when he realised it was to the benefit of the team.

Yeah the line re: Ngumoha is disingenuous. If we're not blocking his pathway, play him. If he's too young we should have signed someone else. It's bullshit. I get the impression from what Slot said is that he needs his attackers to either track back and defend, press, or both, but surely that's coaching?

I think it's equally dangerous to bank on us improving when there's no clear signs we will. The football has been stagnant for a long time now, we lack purpose, intensity and winning mentality. Players are below par across the board, Slot has a real lack of empathy and is hiding behind bullshit in his interviews and the togetherness that there was, seems to have all but evaporated.

We stick with this and we risk not qualifying for Europe, having had a massive outlay that was supposed to compound an already talented squad. If you have disillusion in the squad, you then risk losing players, and so on. I get that the right candidate might not be available, but we're an institution, we have a lot of talented people around the club and the likes of Edwards should really have contingency plans in place, should the worst happen, even if it's only a temporary measure.

It's how you weigh up the potential for damage and when it becomes a case of damage limitation, personally I don't think we should let it get that far. I've got no faith in him whatsoever.

If we get stuffed by Arsenal, does anyone think it will force things? I think the Fulham result was crucial to that, I think if we'd have beaten Fulham it might have given a bit of leeway, but to drop points against Leeds, Fulham and to then get well beaten by Arsenal, what then? We'd have capitulated against Chelsea, City and Arsenal, who are "supposed" to be our rivals. If we don't change things in January, we're stuck with this mess until the Summer, aren't we?

I dont think so. Sadly we would probably have to go on another horrible run of defeats or look like CL football was about to slip for us for something to happen. My guess is that the managers we are interested in wont move midseason. Slot vs an interim manager is probably a close call results wise.

I agree, that's a risk too. We do look to be getting results now though (but not the performances to match), and we do look like we will get CL next year, we're moving in the right direction in the league. Outside of a repeat of the collapse we had in October/November, I think he should stay until the summer. We should also be looking at alternatives as you say, either way, I'm sure we are.

The dangerous thing is that its a long way to the summer given amount of games, points and CL qual. A mate was over for the Leeds game and said the atmosphere was some of the worst he's experienced. I can understand it as what we as fans are seeing on the pitch isnt exactly exciting. But to fall into this acceptance that mediocracy is the level we'll be at for the rest of the season won't go down well with the fans or players.
If we get spanked by Arsenal on Thursday its gonna be pretty toxic going forward. A few bad results and it will turn very quickly from bad to much worse. Edwards and Hughes must surely have worked on some contingency plans.

The crowd won’t do anything. They’ll continue to be happy clappers in case you get The Anfield Wankers or SoS shitbags on your case. They’ll just sit there in silence. How’s your shit sandwich? Most delightful thank you.

Quite telling yesterday. I haven't been to an away game for ages, the support was really good in general, good atmos, upbeat, but there's zero love for Slot.

I do get that it's a massive problem for the club, simply because there isn't an obvious choice for the next dude. Whatever happens next is risky.

We are not winning a trophy. When the opposition raises their level a little bit, puts a little bit of pressure, they can cut through us with ease, and it is panic stations in our defense. We are not surviving a later-stage knockout game against a PL opposition in this situation.

No, I agree, we're not. But I guess my point was whether there is a route (however unlikely) to Slot keeping his job.

If we're outside the top 4, I am pretty sure he'll be out.

If we make the top 4 but nothing else, he'll probably be out.

If we make the top 4 and win a trophy, I am not sure what the club would do.

There’s more chance of Elton John getting a semi looking at Sidney Sweeney than us getting to one.

Top 5 will get CL.

Top 5 and semis of the CL and he’ll start next season in charge.

Ok, but it's going to have to be audio only, because we will have stabbed our eyes out.

Actually, the most fun I've had recently watching a game was I shoveled snow for two hours while listening to the audio.

We've had great football and results in recent memory, and we've had interesting games and no results. At no time under klopp have we ever had this sustained a period of underperformance. We were bad for a time but we couldn't really field a team, the rest of the time we've looked like we were going somewhere or were at a ceiling that required incomings.

We are a horrible watch. I don't think he will survive even if he qualifies, but who knows, because this is an odd product, as the owners look at it. If I went to a restaurant, I'm pretty sure if it made me eat shit a few dozen times I might stop going at some point.

I think if we're top four (only) , he's not definitely out, I don't think it's that simple. It will really depend on how we're playing, is there progression, maybe the opinions of a few senior players, and how well he can sell his strategy to the owners, do they still believe in him.
