Konate

I think Konate is just Konate right now - nothing has changed, I think he is performing at "his" normal level, and it don't look good to us, because his "normal" is not VVD's "normal".

It looks like he is channelling Djimi Traore, Bambi on Ice had steadier feet. He needs to feel his place inthe squad is in threat. Slot as coach needs to do more

Can't help but feel the contract situation hasn't helped at all - playing like his head is elsewhere, this is all on you Richard. Royally fucking everything up, bring Jorg back to find some studs in the Bundesliga with release clauses.

His faults are largely in part with the rest of the team just looking fucking shite, take for example the booking he got for the pull back on Gordon....Ekitike too fucking slow to release the ball and the pass is easily intercepted back to them. 5 seconds later he's booked. Forwards giving away cheap free kicks putting unneccessary pressure on our defence, which then gives them the chance to knock 1 in our box like for Osula's goal. The problems are all over the pitch.

Love this.
Ibou having bantz centre of attention
Asking about Kostas
Ekitike looks a bit lost

But feels like a serious connection between the French players there.
Whoever it was saying I miss you etc

Yeah, didn't the French used to all fall out, or was that just the Dutch? Lovely vibe amongst the French squad there.

Ibou was going for the schoolboy look but poor Ekitike was hanging about awkwardly like the new boy in class. Ibou will integrate him though. Lovely scenes.

The French have had the occasional fallout but they're not in the Dutchies' class for it.
Not even when there was talk of striking during the world cup? I forget which.

And didn't they want a player kicked out the squad? I may be making that up.

2010 World Cup
Nicolas Anelka was sent home from the World Cup, and was one of five players summoned to the FFF for discord

Weren't all the French squad a bit rapey at one point? Seem to recall Benzema and Ribery and some others banging fifteen year olds but it all going away.

Yeah, 2010 World Cup they cheated Ireland out of their spot, and then went on strike at the tournament. I remember Patrice Evra was the strike leader at the time - that French team were wanker- ish

[Paul Joyce] Ibrahima Konaté’s future remains uncertain. The defender has entered the final year of his own deal and long-standing attempts to persuade him to sign a new contract remain at an impasse. Real Madrid have been identified as potential suitors next summer.

It's always disappointing to lose good players for nothing, doubly so when the club are on top of its game, winning things and showing real ambition in the market. The glass-half-full side suggests that at least we have the chance to sign Guehi for 'free', and Konate's niggling, consistent injuries may mean the later stages of his career will be underwhelming. Losing Konate does make getting the Guehi deal over the line more imperative. With two new fullbacks and a departing title-winning CB, an excellent PL-proven CB and captain would be welcomed with open arms. Additionally, signing Guegi helps the homegrown quota.

It’s a long shot, but I’d love to see Leoni come in for a cup game or two (or if Konate has a couple of stinkers) and look like the real deal…and put the squeeze on Ibou for a starting place. It’s still gutting that we didn’t get Guehi over the line to do the same.

I kind of agree the first bit, but I'd be wary of rushing even such an impressive 18-year-old, new to the club/league/country, into the bearpit that English football can be. Guehi would indeed have had a significant advantage in that respect.

After the whole Trent stuff it just feels a bit meh. If he leaves - he leaves, and we deal with it in terms of replacements.
Weird that it was appaz very close to getting done in Nov/Dec last year and we're still here in the unknown for some reason.

Exactly, I don't think Guehi is coming to play second fiddle. I think Konate is off.

From Joyce's article

However, Konaté’s future remains uncertain. The France defender has entered the final year of his own deal and long-standing attempts to persuade him to sign a new contract remain at an impasse.

Real Madrid have been identified as potential suitors next summer and, while Liverpool do not want to lose the player, they will not beg anyone to remain at Anfield.
Konate joking on French TV

During an interview with French TV channel TF1, Konate jokingly claimed that France captain Mbappe is putting pressure on him to switch to Madrid next year. The Reds defender said: "He calls me every two hours! No, no, no."

He is definitely off.

Im not eager to make this team smaller, nor do I think he's got the same ceiling.
I think we're seeing peak Konate at the moment, he'll be 27 by the end of this season. I think he'll get worse with age, because his style of defending is mostly about pace, agility and strength. Don't forget he's quite injury prone as well.

It's just unfortunate that he'll leave for free.

I don’t think there is much between Guehi and Konate as defenders, but the height thing is an issue imho. Guehi next to Virgil works. But we’ll need a replacement for Konate given that Gomez is also probably off next summer.

That sounds reasonable, I just don't want guehi to be a nailed on number two. I'm fine with him competing with someone else and that massive Italian fucker being 4th choice next year.

As are all the best CBs? You don't get to the top of the food chain if you're lacking in 1 of those departments.

Guehi is well protected at Palace and doesn't have to cover anywhere near as much space in his defensive third as someone like Ibou has. Wait till he steps into our shit show and he's hesitating whether having to be dragged wide or into midfield because we're so disorganised, it's going to be a shock to his system.
