Liverpool have today confirmed Adam Lallana has suffered a knee injury in training and is set to miss the start of the new season.

The midfielder, who moved to Anfield from Southampton earlier this month, sustained a knock to his lateral collateral ligament during a session at the Reds' Harvard University training base in Boston.

Lallana has been assessed by Liverpool's medical staff and does not require surgery.

No specific timeframe has been placed on a return to fitness, but injuries of this nature can result in a spell of anywhere up to six weeks on the sidelines.

The England international will undergo further assessment by the club's medical team in the United States and on return to Liverpool.

From the offal

Will miss 3 games. Doesnt need surgery which is good as they feared a longer lay off.
Still fucking shit timing though. Feel for the lad

6 weeks seems a max for this sort of injury and they've already stated it's not as bad as it could be.

I'm calling 3 weeks.

Shame, as all the reports were saying he has been very good in training.
Was looking forward to seeing him against Olympiacos

Unlucky, tough to come in to a new club and get injured before really getting started.

Big loss given the opening 3 fixtures.

Annoying, hope missing pre season doesn't affect him too much, when he is fit hopefully he's the type that is ready to jump right into it all and be up to speed quickly.

Feels like someone has just shat in my cornflakes. What a rubbish start to the day.

Liverpool’s preparations for the new season have been dealt a significant blow after Adam Lallana suffered a knee ligament injury that is expected to keep the England midfield player out of action for up to six weeks.

Lallana, who is yet to feature in a pre-season fixture since joining from Southampton in a £23 million deal this month, suffered the injury yesterday during training at Liverpool’s Harvard University base in Boston.

Liverpool’s medical staff have diagnosed damage to Lallana’s lateral collateral ligament, but initial fears that he could require an operation that would have kept him out for up to three months have since been allayed.

Lallana had been expected to make his Liverpool debut in a pre-season friendly against Olympiacos in Chicago on Sunday, but plans are now being made for him to return to Merseyside after treatment in the United States.

The news will be received with disappointment by Roy Hodgson who had earmarked Lallana for a starting place in England’s friendly against Norway on September 3. The timescale involved for his recovery also indicates that the 26-year-old could struggle to be fit for England’s opening 2016 European Championship qualifying group game away to Switzerland five days later.

Lallana will miss the opening three games of Liverpool’s Barclays Premier League season, fixtures at home to Southampton, his former club, and away to Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
