Liverpool related transfer speculation

He’s an Italian CB though…

Oh, there's no question that that would normally be a positive recommendation - they've produced a large number of great players in all positions but especially at the back. The unfortunate fact though is that Italian players and LFC don't mix. I don't know how or why not, but given our history with them it seems futile to me to deny that.

It's possibly just a coincidence.

Yes, but….

….The name Leoni, both as a given name and surname, originates from the Latin word "leo," meaning "lion." It is often associated with qualities like strength, courage, and nobility, mirroring the characteristics attributed to lions. The name has roots in both Greek and Latin and has been used across various cultures and time periods, evolving from a male name (Leon) and its feminine form (Leonie) to also being used as a surname.

That many times though? Aquilani, Balotelli, Dossena, Padelli, Paletta, now Chiesa (and those are just the ones I remember)?

What are you suggesting, some kind of curse?

I'm wary of Italian players in general because for one reason or another they don't seem to travel that well, but I'm not going to rule them out because we've had a particularly bad record with them. If the fundamentals all look good I'd have no problem with this Leoni lad.

As I said above, I don't know why this history has developed as it has. However, IMO the fact that one can't work out the reason for something isn't a good argument for ignoring that it has happened, repeatedly and over a long period. If we sign Leoni or any other Italian player I'll get behind him, but doing so would be a triumph of hope over experience.

People do realise before Ibou, the list of French players who represented us included; Sakho, Diomede, Cissokho, Cisse, Cheyrou & Ngog right?

If you sign shit players when you know at the time they're shit, newsflash....don't be surprised when they turn out that very same way.

Paletta is Argentinian

Yep, and Padelli was a throwaway signing never expected to succeed, Balotelli was a known mentalist, Chiesa a known crock etc. It's not like anyone was massively shocked they didn't work.

If I had to guess I'd say the issue with Italian players in England is 80% their league. Although I don't watch it anymore it was always painfully slow and tactical and they obviously bred players to thrive in it. eg you hardly ever seem to see a fast Italian player lol. But they must exist! There will BE Italian players who are built to play in the PL. You just have to be extra cautious about them.

We just bought the wrong Italians. It's as simple as that.

Italians don’t tend to do well anywhere. I think there’s only been one notable Italian to win the Spanish league. Then there is Donearunner at PSG. It’s hard to think of many others.

Has there been a successful Italian in the premier league this century? Zola kind of overlapped

Zambrotta was ok at Barca
Cannavaro at Real.
Ravanelli was awesome at boro no?
I can't think of many others - they tend to stay at home if they're great.

Edit - thanks Fab - Zola and Vialli at Chelsea

Exactly, the best Italians usually don't leave Italy.

Tonali has done very well at Newcastle, both on the field and gambling wise.
Udogie has been decent.
Coppola is an interesting signing for Brighton this summer.

I don't mind taking a chance on an 18 year old wonderkid that we can turn into a scouse powerhouse while he's young.

Zola tailed off from 2000.

Vialli has an fa cup no league. Ravannelli was a one season wonder wasn’t he? 25 goals in total according to the premier league website.
