Oh and what? Rebel doesn't believe in having police?

He IS the reason we have police.
No, they're "corrupt agents of the state", which may or may not have some validity to various degrees blah blah blah, BUT, if, for example, you're just an everyday Joe Shmo, ie, not a gangster and someone attacks you or your family, who is going to investigate/deal with that situation ?

Crazy I tells ya !
Case in point this shooting thing in Cumbria.

I doubt I'll ever agree with anything Rebel says. And if I do, it may be time to jump off a bridge.
And there you go.

I've thought about it some more, and I'm still majorly disappointed.

Even more disappointing is how this thread has just morphed into one poster after another trying to outdo each other in declaring how shit Rafa was.

Cheers for the memories eh?
There was a logical, if not very dignified reason for it degenerating that way though Ryan, and no it wasn't just because Rafa was shit.

Fair enough. I've ignored most of the Rebel Vs Everyone conversation Vlad, so excuse me.

When the dust settle on all of this, I expect (or hope, not sure) Rafa to receive some modicum of gratitude from the fans. I can only speak for myself, but my greatest Liverpool memories have been borne out of his actions, and that's soemthing to be extremely thankful for, regardless of how sour it may or may not have turned.

Jesus, that's not what I was expecting or hoping to wake up to this morning.

Initial thoughts off the top of my head:
- Sadness
- Disappointment
- Resignation
- End of an era
- I really hope the board have a plan up their sleeves and this is the first instalment of it. As Ross say's; new owners may be waitning in the wings and didn't wqant Benitez. Fine. I can l;ive with that. If yhi is just a sacking for the sake of it, then what's the point?
- Hodgson will be ushered in cos he can manage on fuck-all budget, is old and experienced - Sounds like when Leeds shoe-horned in Venables under similar circumstances
- Gerrard's got the choice of Mourinho at Madrid, or Roy at our fucked-up club. See ya Stevie.
- I loved Rafa. But then I loved Houllier too and didn't want him to be sacked.
- Nah, I love Rafa more. I'm upset.
I would find it as lot easier to love Rafa if he showed some appreciation for his culpability in the shortcomings of our team. It was the same with Houllier. If anything, I crave a manager I could love.
Mate, no Manager's perfect. My Arsenal supporting mates hate Wenger, which I can't comprehend. There's always going to be something you can pick on.

I remember reading a post on here a few months back along the lines of "We need a new manager who doesn't do predictable subsititutions."

Seriously, what the fuck?
There are lots of things you could pick on with Rafa though. I'm not going to join in with the Rafa bashing, or pinpointing his failures. I don't rejoice in his departure(if and when it's confirmed). I'm still incredibly apprehensive about what the future holds. But I'd be lying if I said I'm not a tiny bit encouraged by this news. Rafa's tenure has gone stale, and I think it's necessary for us to turn the page and start afresh. I have absolutely no confidence in Rafa arresting the situation - the signs were there from the first game last season and he failed to do anything about it over the proceeding 50+ games.

In short, I would rather see us try something new than continue with something that blatantly isn't working. Come what may.

1) The world recession fucked up the stadium , or did you miss that one whilst on planet fucking Zog. It also fucked up the rest of the yanks finances, just like it did to everyone else particularly DIC by the way, oh and Mr Abramovitch.
that recession didn't stop arsenal from building their stadium, but anyway I brought up the yanks because you seem to be under the impression they (the yanks) wont do anything that will harm their investment anything more I say on that subject will be speculation, I'll leave it say and say 'time will time'.

2) Opinion that doesn't fall in with the masses is not thick, as it happens, I was in a fairly small minority for much of his tenure , airing my doubts. Thick is not seeing the blindingly fucking obvious (or is that buildingly fucking obvious), and not being able to change an opinion as it is so deeply entrenched.

bringing up a typo, hilarious. why entrenched? remove last season and rafa's record is excellent.

last season was an absolute disgrace , no argument, who the fuck would argue that point? I just wanted him to given another season to put it right. people thought it was blindingly obvious to get rid of rafa with the horrendous winter slump (season before last) and then we went on an amazing winning run.

loads of people bring up fergie's early seasons, wasn't it blindingly obvious to get rid then?

3) He has earned fuck all.....you are as good as your last match, or in a managers case ....last season. Anyway, he only won what he did with a team based on Houlliers squad anyway and in two brilliant but lucky finals.
so now we're reduced to calling the finals lucky? okay, whatever...

as I said before 'you're only as good as your last season' is a fair point of view, but I and many others don't share that point of view. I think rafa has been an excellent when you view his ENTIRE tenure but we're going to have to agree to disagree.

4) You got a bit right Neil, anyone who comes in will be a better option to be honest. Rafa spent over £36m last window and brought a right back and a crocked midfielder (who may yet come good), and totally forgot about some cunt that could score goals.

the striker was the boards fault as the keane money wasn't reinvested, but I definately agree rafa could have done better in the transfer market but every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market, as I said I am well aware of rafa shortcomings of last season but I still think he had it in him to turn it around. and we are difinately going to have to agree to disagree than ANYONE who comes will be a better option.

Fine mate.

As I said earlier - I can live with this sacking if it's the first installation of a plan. I may be being naive and giving the club/board undue credit, but surely, fucking suris is part of a greater plan that we'll see unfolding over the next few weeks and months?

If it isn't, and there just sacking him with no fucking idea what to do next, then at worst - this is a catastrophe, and at best it's putting lipstick on a pig.

But that doesn't mean those of us who have grown dissillusioned and want him to leave are either wrong or should feel ashamed. It's sad that it's ending like this, but I'm not going to pretend not to be glad that it is ending.
And for the record I do know how you, spider etc feel as I felt this exact way about houllier, I was gutted when he left and argued a lot that we should have given him another year, even when it was clear the facts didn't bare that out.

Thanks for the memories Rafa - Err, I will choose to have amnesia about last season.

We will see Dalglish as caretaker manager. If they have spoken to Torres and Gerrard about it, I think they definitely would have signalled their approval, such is their love of Kenny.

In all seriousness Rebel, I disagree with your view, but I also disagree with Neil's. I don't act "viciously" towards him, though, because he gets into a debate, takes and respects others' opinions and talks (somewhat) rationally.

You however, ignore anything that doesn't fit in with your agenda and respond with more inane babble. You don't take any points on board, engage with other posters, or offer any kind of rapport. You shoot down anything you don't agree with and almost come across as hoping that everything goes wrong with our club just to prove you right about Benitez.

This feels like a wild tangent is forming here.

Mirror again

IF there was a defining moment that said it was time for Rafa Benitez to leave Liverpool, then it came at Birmingham in April.

In a game the Spanish coach’s side simply had to win to keep alive fast receding Champions League hopes, he replaced top scorer – some would say only scorer – Fernando Torres, with David Ngog, with almost half an hour remaining.

The look of sheer bewilderment on the face of Europe’s best striker was matched only by the shock that was etched all over the features of Reds skipper and talisman Steven Gerrard.

It was a moment that was captured by the tv cameras, and was the beginning of the end for Benitez, because in that split-second, it became painfully obvious he had lost his senior players.

The talk today, as the manager’s Anfield tenure officially comes to an end, will be of the rift between Benitez and his board, in particular American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

But it is lower down the structure at the club that you must look for the reasons behind his sacking. When it came to it, some of the biggest stars in world football had decided they could simply no longer play for their coach. So Liverpool had a tricky decision to make.

Keep the manager who had steered them to two Champions League finals but risk losing three or four world class players.

Or make a move now to bring desperately needed stability to the playing side of the club, and allow the likes of Gerrard, Torres, Javier Mascherano and Jamie Carragher to head off the World Cup in the knowledge that the positive moves they had demanded were being implemented.

In the end, it was a no contest.

The idea of selling Torres and Gerrard and giving Benitez £80million or more was untenable, given his disasters in the transfer market in recent seasons.

His last three £20m signings, Robbie Keane, Alberto Aquilani and Glen Johnson were in no way successful, with the former two proving downright catastrophes.

Benitez has never been a manager who has found easy relationships with players, and his style is simply not conducive to fostering loyalty and trust or longevity in his squad.

Guillem Balague, the Mirror’s very own Spanish correspondent knows Benitez well, and in these pages only months ago, even he – someone close to the Reds boss – said that the manager’s style was to constantly sell players on.

“Many are blaming Benitez’s personality for the team’s demise and I have always had the impression that for his methods to succeed he must constantly recycle new blood through the squad, even replacing key players with new ones eager to respond to him,†he wrote here.

It is an astute observation. Benitez’s cold style has led to many criticisms, and his treatment in particular of the popular Xabi Alonso and Sami Hyypia led to much unrest.

Many of the players believe that Alonso was forced out because of the events of the previous summer, when Benitez had openly tried to replace the midfielder with Gareth Barry. And many wanted Hyypia to be given a new deal, instead of being allowed to leave.

This season, he has fallen out at various times with Ryan Babel, Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun, as well as Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano, and the atmosphere within the squad has been uneasy for some months.

There have also been massive reservations about the manager’s cautious nature and his unattractive style of football. Liverpool scored just 19 goals away from home in the Premier League last season – four of them against Burnley – and won just five matches.

It was too negative for Torres, who dreamed of support from wingers and a target man to take the load from him, and that led to further unrest.

That was communicated forcefully to the board, with many of the biggest stars making it clear they couldn’t see a future at Anfield if he was still in charge.

In total, in his six years at the club, he has signed almost 100 players, including some of the youth team players he signed for big money over the years.

Now Liverpool are hoping for a period of stability, as they set about looking for the new owners who can bring with them the funds to build a new stadium that is the key to the future of the club.

With Gerrard and Torres still on board, that will be a marginally easier prospect.

Crazy I tells ya !
you just don't get it do you.

when someone breaks in to your house you just go 'you're under arrest. i'm the police', cos you ARE the police -- but so are they so they might arrest you first.

no system's perfect.
But what if I become corrupt myself and don't stop the crims making off with my gear because I'm getting my palm greased by MI5 (the people across the road). ?
someone would have to call the 'proper' police.
Ah, but there aren't any, silly !
you just don't get it.
I know, damn me, I've been blinded by sight bullies.
This feels like a wild tangent is forming here.
i'm just trying to impart the full thrust of rebel's future communist anarcho utopian police state to themn, so that he can genuflect to the visionary grandeur of it all.

Bollocks.

That's a fucking wank article from Maddock.

Torres was the worst player on the pitch by miles that day, and as we now know - was carrying a major injury.

2=2=5260 from Maddock, the fucking hack.

Now is the time to kick the man when he is down. Disgusted with the way this issue has been handled. As you said Ryan, I hope this is a part of a plan. And I wish a European Cup winning manager was treated with more respect.

Had we taken just one of the half dozen or so clear chances that came *after* the substitution, having previously created very little, no one would have batted an eyelid.

In fairness, though, Torres clearly felt he could play on. And he played 85 minutes against Benfica( ?) in the next match. Benitez was clearly prioritising the UEFA Cup by taking him off there.
