Liverpool U18 & U21

So how is Oakley Cannonier progressing? Now 21 but at 17 he was supposed to be hot property? In his last year of his current contract

Unfortunately, another one whose career has been derailed by injuries. Back in January this year, it was reported that we'd be letting him leave, but somehow that never transpired (or it was a false rumour). Currently still at the club, but wasn't in the team for the last 2 games. Played maybe 60 minutes or a bit more in the U21 pre-season games (about 5 games?).

I suppose if he's fit, he might get a loan to a League One / Two club to try and make an impression to convince someone to offer him a spot after his term here is done.

The U18s just destroyed Burnley U18s 6-1 away. Showing the U21s how it's done. Bradshaw and Sonni-Lambie with 2 apiece, Yaguo and Forrester completing the scorers. Hope to find highlights of this game soon.

Our u21s are shite but tbf they got the job done last night.

Ngumoha played more like Jeremy Doku or Adama Traore in that clip. Probably because he's with the U19s and thinks he needs to be the focal point of attacks or establish himself more there, than when he plays with the seniors at the club.

That's how he plays in every single youth game I've ever seen him in. Loads of stepovers usually followed by dribbling towards the corner flag under pressure from the defender. It's like nobody's ever told him that quick feet have very little to do with beating a man - it's 90% acceleration and quick changes of direction. That's why I was always lukewarm on him as a prospect.

But then in the senior team he's much more direct and effective.

Yeah, in the very little bits of some games I caught previously, that was the impression I got. That was why I was pleasantly surprised to see him improve on that in the first pre-season game, and then suddenly take that improvement up a notch in subsequent games. To now see him go back to those bad habits in the England U19s is somewhat disappointing and confusing. Does he have a switch that he flicks to toggle playing modes or what?

Trent Kone-Doherty, on the other hand, seems a lot more mature in his development (albeit a bit older). The more I see of this kid, the more I like his chances of making the step up soon.

My charitable explanation is that he's just exceptionally skillful and finds it hard to resist showing it off. I guess the club just sees the underlying ability and thinks they can coach the bad stuff out of him. Tbf they seem to be doing that fairly well so far.

Gotta disagree on Kone-Doherty. He looks fine enough at youth level but you can tell he won't make it just because he's never involved with the first team.

U21s lost 0 - 2 away to League One side Burton Albion (the senior team, not U21) in their opening Vertu Trophy Group H game.

Our lineup for this game::
-- Mrozek, Davidson (Pitt, 64), Miles, R. Williams, Pinnington, Spearing (Laffey, 55), Gordon, Pilling, Wright (Figueroa, 55), Morrison, Ahmed (Onanuga, 64).
-- Unused subs: Hall, Lucky, Airoboma.

Missing:
- Kone-Doherty -- Republic of Ireland U21 (unused sub in their 2-1 win over Moldova U21)
- Nyoni -- England U19 (started and played 70 minutes in their 2-0 win over Ukraine U19)
- Danns -- called up for England U20 (they play tomorrow against Italy U20)
- Ramsay -- no idea; don't think he was called up for Scotland U21; he did feature in the past few U21 games so he wasn't injured (then)

I think the Northern Ireland U19 / U21 teams didn't have games, hence why Morrison was available for this game.

If you're wondering, like me, what the Vertu Trophy is::
The Vertu Trophy is a midweek knockout cup competition which includes Clubs from EFL League One and League Two, plus an additional 16 invited sides from Premier League and EFL Championship clubs with Category One Academies.

I know nothing about about Kane-Doherty other than the fact he appears to be small and lightweight but yeah, if you're still playing in the park at 19, it's not looking good. A loan move is the way to go.

As for Rio and that England clip, yeah, lots of showboating and lack of end product... almost as if he was treating it as a training match and seeing what he can do / get away with.

I'm less bothered, the game has lost too much of the individuality it used to have.

Is that Rhys Williams playing for the U21s there?
Ha the one and only. He usually doesn't turn out for the U21s, but with injuries (Nallo) and I guess, because we were playing the Burton Albion senior team, we decided to field a couple of overage players (Williams and Spearing).

I think so when we have so many representing their international sides.

The enigma that is Rhys Williams...
Hasn’t played a game for us since the 2020/21 season.

Evidently, no team in league football is interested in signing him. Got relegated with Morecambe from League 2 last season.

Earns £10k per week just for showing up to train with the U21s, and still has a year left on his contract.

I never really rated the kid, but what went wrong?

Has he lost his motivation to play professional football, or is it something else?

That Farkas kid is going to be playing alongside Szobo in the Euros in two years. I guarantee it.

I’m guessing loss of motivation had something to do with it - Liverpool first team under Klopp to not being wanted by anyone in League 2 is quite the regression… You have to think that making your big breakthrough too early can have a deterimental effect if you’re not mentally ready for it.

I guess there was similar concern with Quansah too, although he’s more talented than Williams.

Yeah I think Rhys will either end up playing non-league football, play abroad in some obscure League or just retire completely.
