I don't think either Lucas or Adam are the answer for centre midfield unfortunately.

It's like we cursed ourselves with that best midfield in the world song

I respect Lucas for keeping going despite the criticism and pressure, fair play to him for that, but lets not pretend that he earned his place via his quality because he didn't he just got lucky that we sold two centre mids while he was here. However he has greatly improved over the last year or so and is not a walking disaster area as he was at the beginning, one of the articles above mentions Ramires of Chelsea cost 3 times more and didn't even get on the Brasil bench but that forms no argument for me whatsoever, until Lucas can burst past 2 defenders and drill the ball into the net like Ramires did against City I know who i would prefer.

He has not hidden and has been a team player no doubt and is a useful squaddie but I for one will be hoping for a better player arriving for his position this summer.

Right now I'd kill for our 2005:

Kewell Alonso Gerrard Garcia

With Hamann to throw into the mix too...

*Sobs*

I think Spearing is more suited to the English game, but he's got a lot more to prove.

Lucas it is.

Oh and Lucas is better than Spearing, but that's not saying much. Neither are good enough.

However we know Lucas isn't good enough over what he's done for the past 3 or so years, but we can't be sure of that with regards to Spearing in the long run.

BRING BACK MOMO!!!

Ahh MOMO! don't think he passed to a Red shirt again after he got kicked in the eye. Boundless energy though from the big fella.

So we're all agreed then? Lucas is here to stay as a squaddy? Great. Lock up the thread boys.

Personally, I think we're lowering our standards even accepting him as a squad player.

Our squad has been filled with some proper garbage in the last 20 years, so I don't know how much we can talk about standards. The "first eleven" is a different matter.

Brazil boss Mano Menezes has announced the Brazil squad which will compete for the Copa América next month. The 22 man seleção includes Alexandre Pato and Paulo Henrique Ganso, both of whom have been deemed fit enough to appear in Argentina. Among the names to miss out are Kaká, Marcelo, Hernanes, Nilmar, and Thiago Neves.

Goalkeepers: Victor (Gremio), Julio Cesar (Inter)

Defenders: Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (Inter), Andre Santos (Fenerbahce), Adriano (Barcelona), Lucio (Inter), Thiago Silva (Milan), David Luiz (Chelsea) Luisao (Benfica)

Midfielders: Lucas Leiva (Liverpool), Ramires (Chelsea), Sandro (Tottenham), Jadson (Shakhtar Donetsk), Elias (Atletico Madrid), Elano (Santos), Paulo Henrique Ganso (Santos), Lucas Silva (Sao Paulo)

Forwards: Robinho (Milan), Pato (Milan), Fred (Fluminense), Neymar (Santos)

Can't wait to see Neyamr and Ganso.

I noticed Moura (I think that's his name) didn't make the squad. Isn't he the next big thing?

Yeah, esp the latter cos Neymar has featured quite a lot for the starting XI lately but haven't really seen Ganso yet. Moura? What position does he play in and for which club?

Yes I have.

Watched the Brazil-Romania game last night.

Hilarious watching the Brazil players queuing up to tee up Ronaldo with a goal. Which he couldn't convert.

He's listed as Lucas Silva (Sao Paulo) in the squad, mate. Full name Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva. 😛

172 - Lucas Leiva made more tackles than any other player in the Premier League & completed 83% of his 1794 passes.
[/quote]

Not bad for a player who can't tackle eh?

He had a very good season, lets hope he can continue to improve. Let's face it, his attitude is second to none (well maybe Dirk).

I think the tackle misconception with Lucas is because people tend to think of a tackle as being something you do sliding on your arse.

Hamann was the same in that he'd block and shield the ball or anticipate the loose ball, which I think Lucas is learning, he'll never be as aggressive as Masher was in the tackle (as we all know), unfortunately.

Fuckin el not ANOTHER thread hijacked into a Lucas thread.

Heh I'm kidding of course.

Spot on, which is one reason why - however often Lucas makes those tackles - he still gets brushed aside from them too often. His effort can't be faulted. His effectiveness still can, despite the improvement he's made.

Me neither, not that early in the season. The real questions will be whether he's still a starter by season's end and, if so, why.

I'll tell you why, I think after we make all our purchases lucas will still be the only out an out holding midfielder on the books (well along with spearing).
