The Brazilian midfielder has endured a torrid time with ligament and thigh problems over the last two years, but claims he is back to his best after a positive start to pre-season
Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is delighted with his pre-season progress, and claims to be feeling 50 per cent fitter than he did last season.

After missing the majority of the 2011-12 season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, the Brazilian picked up a thigh problem at the beginning of last campaign that ruled him out for three months, and claims he is only now returning to full fitness.

"I'm feeling 50-60 per cent better than I was last season," he told the club’s official website.

"The last six months I played were really important for me. I needed to get games and sessions, and this season now I'm feeling strong and feeling that I'm in the shape I was before the injury.

"Now I've got to improve the fitness and build confidence, but I'm really happy with the way pre-season has started."

The 26-year-old was voted the Reds’ Player of the Season after his last injury-free campaign in 2011, but has made just 38 Premier League appearances in the two years since then.

He'll have a stormer this season. Fuck the haters.

I think you missed out parts of the interview. If he's named the vice captain, then the highlighted parts might be what persuaded Rodgers.

Lucas is one of 27 players currently in Indonesia for the first leg of our summer tour, with new players Iago Aspas, Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto and Simon Mignolet also in the party.

And Lucas has revealed how he takes it upon himself to help any new player settle, in the hope they will find their form quicker.

He explained: "Myself and a few others try to translate and be the link between the staff and players. We try to make sure they feel welcome and happy because if they adapt quicker, they'll find their form quicker.

"We saw how well Coutinho played when he arrived in January because off the pitch he was really comfortable.

"I always try to be this link - because if they perform well it's good for us as a team."

At 26, Lucas is one of the oldest players in what was the youngest Barclays Premier League team last season.

"It's been six years and my seventh season is here already," he added. "How much I've changed since I arrived - the hair and the face! Older, for sure.

"I really appreciate how things changed for me at this club. I want to keep going.

"Being one of the older players in the squad makes you feel like you have extra responsibility. I really like that, and I hope I can be one of the leaders on the pitch this season."

Seriously though he has a good chance of getting into the Brazil team if about 20 really Brazilian midfielders get injured or die. I have my fingers crossed for him.

Dang, I forgot the word 'good'.

But as Rosco has demonstrated, it actually still works because we're talking about Lucas.

After a highly uninspiring start Lucas settled into being a really good player for us and then did his knee. I find it strange that so few are willing to defend him tbh.

Ross is the worst. He talked at length when Lucas was coming back about not expecting to see anything from him for another year and that he would struggle last season. Then when he struggled Ross got on his back all season.
I think its a massive season for him. Hes not a kid, and that half season before he got injured is either the level he performs at or a flash in the pan. If he doesnt hit the ground running this year with a full pre-season he has to be moved on. But he deserves the start of the season to see what kind of player we have now.

TROOF.

It seems that doubt is starting to creep in for Wonderman's #1 fan ...

Half a good season vs five and a half fairly miserable seasons - I think we've given Lucas more time than anyone deserves.

Although I've never really rated the guy I'd actually love for him to emerge as some clearly imperious player. It'd be a great underdog tale - the kid that stuck it through - but at this point I'm not going to hold my breath.

Oh, and I'm quietly confident Lucas will perform very well indeed this season.

And that 99% of you will be made to look rather foolish.

Again.

He'd be high on my list of players to move on.

He's never doen enough to merit a regular starting place in our midfield.

6 decent months in 5 yearshardly warrants the backing he gets from some quarters.

Yeah him and the Rolls Royce are a dream midfield about to happen

Don't really see how we'll be made to look foolish either, given he's spent about 80% of his time here dividing opinion and in largely indifferent form. He's a nice lad, a good member of the dressing room, a hard worker, a top pro and occasionally when at the top of his game is a great asset, but the latter has been a sporadic quality, so I don't think people have exactly been made to eat humble pie.
