[article=http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/380493/EXCLUSIVE-Liverpool-plot-40m-double-swoop-for-Southampton-stars-Lallana-and-Clyne]Manchester City are looking to pounce on Liverpool for two of their best academy coaches.

Steve Torpey and Darren Hughes look after youngsters at Anfield from the ages of eight and upwards and have earned a strong reputation.

But they are understood to have grown settled with various changes in the running of the Kirkby-based academy and City want them to bring through their youngsters instead City, not satisfied with buying some of the world’s best players for their first team, are looking to bring in the best young players too.

They see Torpey, who played for Port Vale and FC United, as an ideal figure and Hughes works alongside him.

City took Rodolfo Borrell from Liverpool’s academy to become their global technical director.[/article]

The youth set up is the one area where I think there are question marks about Rodgers. After bombing out Borrell, who was adored by the Academy kids, Rodgers has brought in Neil Critchley, who seemed seriously overawed when he arrived, and hasn't really impressed that much since. Maybe there's a delayed master plan, but unless he comes out and explains his actions I don't think we can be confident about this. Inglethorpe was a brilliant addition, that made great sense, but, lower down, it's been confusing. I don't think Torpey and Hughes would represent the most devastating of losses, but, from the outside, there's a worrying lack of momentum at youth level since those changes. Borrell had a great reputation, a superb attitude and real charisma, and to kick him out was a big call. As far as I'm concerned I fear we've replaced him with inferior figures.

Was there some chat that Borrell was talking with City behind our backs or am I mixing him up with someone else?

I'm wondering if it's the same Darren Hughes who I used to play football with as a kid. Good for him if it is, although he's a Liverpool fan so his heart should be with the club.

if you don't mind me asking how do you know so much about the workings of the academy ?

was a reason ever given for getting rid of borrell and the others ?

That's right, but I think that was malicious gossip. Borrell absolutely adored the club.
You could be right. But I dunno, if he had gone to the same position at city I would agree with you. But he went and became global technical director gives me reason to believe the rumours about him were true.
