Liverpool take Ghana star on trial

GHANA Under-20 International Mumuni Abubakar is set to arrive in Liverpool this week for a two-week trial with the Reds.

The 18-year-old midfielder was spotted by Liverpool scouts in Italy while playing for New Edubiase United in a friendly against Parma last November.

It has now been confirmed that Abubakar, who was voted the Sport Writers Association’s Ghana Premier League Player of the Year for 2011, will be on trial from this week.

Fifa agent Oliver Arthur said: “Liverpool will assess him for 10 days and then take a decision, but I’m confident he’s not coming back to Ghana.”

Today’s transfer rumours

Despite his young age the midfielder is club captain of New Edubiase United and he will be hoping to impress Dalglish to earn himself a move to the Premier League outfit before the January transfer window closes.

Arthur added: ”I understand he had a good game yesterday [Saturday] against Medema in the Ghana Premier League and so his fitness level cannot be questioned.

“He is a promising player and I wish him all the best.”

Abubakar becomes the latest youngster to be invited for a trial by Kenny Dalglish after Mexican Under 17 striker Marco Bueno and Spanish youngster Nacho spent time on Merseyside last summer.

I think I just pulled a Binny.

Well, there has been produced some cracking midfielders from Ghana of late, maybe we can get lucky with this one.
Winning the Sportswriters player of the year award is a good start.

Exactly what I thought too it'd be nice to have an energetic Essien type around and is he the captain of a senior side too, also sounds good. I hope the Baio kid in the u18's turn's out to be that sort of player too.

He's evidently shite, but he's got the most blackest sounding name in the world so he'll do for the club right about now.

Can you not see the photo, he doesn't need a black sounding name, he's very, very black.

It's wrong that I'm wondering whether commenting on how black his skin is could be perceived as racist, & shows how restrictive race related language etc is in this country.

Hahaha, I read that in the voice too. Cool.

I fucking love that episode.

Ghana youth midfielder Mumuni Abubakar has expressed satisfaction with his two-week trial with English giants Liverpool and believes his performances would earn him a move to the Premiership club during the winter transfer window.

The 18-year old New Edubiase defensive midfielder, who was voted 2010 Premier League Player of the Year by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, believes he impressed the Liverpool technical team in training during his two-week stint with Kenny Dalglish's side.

"They were impressed by my performances during training and the match that I played. The technical team like my style of play, so hopefully they will sign me," the New Edubiase United skipper told Joy Sports.

"When you go to trials, they talk to your agent and not you the player. Liverpool is talking with my agent (Oliver Arthur) now. They're impressed with my performances so we should get a favourable response."

Abubakar, whose unblemished disciplinary record and performance for New Edubiase in the 2010/11 League season where he didn’t receive a single red-card, was spotted by scouts of Liverpool in November last year while on tour with Ghana’s in Italy where he impressed in a friendly against Serie A side Parma.

If the move falls through, Abubakar will be the first Glo Premier League player to directly move to the English Premiership.
