Post Match Newcastle (A) Aug 26th 2 fucking 3

Agreed - but I'm not convinced £130m on a forward when you can see our CBs falling apart is a sound financial decision.

It's not a one or the other decision though, we're aiming to buy both. We may end up with only one of them(or none), but I don't think that'd mean we chose to only sign that one.

I thought Gakpo last night really underlined what we lost by selling Diaz. The constant running, enterprise, tenacity he brought - Gakpo's got none of that. Both he and Salah are essentially "moments" players who'll produce occasional brilliant end product but basically do fuck all else all game. That's why you can't just measure football by stats.

Diaz also has something that Rio showed glimpses of - but we don't have anyone doing continuously - beating a man through dribbling/skill.

Against an organised defence, you can't always progress through passing and running into space etc as it can be very predictable. Diaz brought the flair and execution to beat a man and put the defence on the back foot. We don't have anyone doing that in the team and our attack as a result is very predictable - and is scoring through some excellent moment as you say - but on the whole doesn't look very threatening.

There's nothing much to really like about us right now.

Defending is bad, we always look likely to concede especially from set pieces. Midfield is poor, it's not working, we were 2nd best there easily. Up front we're a big threat, 7 goals in 2 games but even there something feels off. Pace is one thing we really need.

We were 2-0 up v 10 men there & cruising. To end up hanging on for the draw deep into injury time is unforgivable really, it was shambolic.

I can't help but keep thinking Brendan Rodgers football but this seems even more chaotic. Maybe that's because it's here & now.
I get what you're saying but we objectively were not hanging on for the draw deep into injury time. We won.

Assists stats are pretty shit i agree. The player can pass 2 yards to another player for him to blast it in for 35 yards and he will get an assist.

Which makes players with little assists while playing 90 mins in almost every match in an attacking position even the more shit.

I had an over-riding sense of "get back in your box" with Newcastle last night.
I've been less than impressed with how Isak has conducted himself these last few weeks and I doubt we're blameless in that.
But then seeing their fans frothing at the mouth last night, their players getting themselves injured / suspended trying to leave one on our lads, or trying to win fouls (Tonali) I'm afraid any sympathy I felt for the fans, the players or the club itself went out the window.
The look on the fans' faces at the end - yeah, get used to how that feels, there's plenty more to come.
Karma's a bitch.

To Alan Shearer and the ugly mugs the cameraman kept stuffing in my face all game:

Couldn't agree more. That's what I meant by "enterprise" tbf. There's a good reason why so many of the best kids who come through are, ultimately, just shit hot dribblers. That's why everyone's so excited about Rio and Dowman - they can beat people at will and there's no bigger cheat code in football than that.

What a great goal. What a great assist by Szoboszlai. And what a great finish by Ngumoha. That finish looks splendid. What a first-time touch, what a way to find a corner. Tremendous.

Most players would make one touch to control the ball and then make a shot. This finish is superb. Making that extra touch would've allowed goalkeeper to surge forward and start closing the net. A fantastic finish and a fantastic goal. Goal of the season so far.

Rewatching the highlights; wirtz made a lot of excellent runs that just weren't picked out. Whether it was gakpo, Jones, gravy, no one was alive to him.

The physicality aspect I'm sure he's working on, but the most important thing will be wavelength

i saw that too but you have to wonder if some of the players were actively deciding those balls weren’t a good idea. wirtz was likely to get murdered by burn or someone else.

Szoboszlai needs to be starting on current form. If that means benching Mac Allister, who clearly has something rumbling on, or even more boldly Wirtz, then so be it.

Personally, I’d have started Wirtz on the bench last night. My one gripe with Slot is that he often underestimates the importance of earning the right to play by winning enough duels and battles in midfield. In plenty of games the football comes later, and Newcastle away, especially with everything surrounding Isak, was exactly the sort of occasion where you pick your most physically dominant players in the centre of the park and go toe to toe. Jones should have been RB, if needed.

Right now, we’re too much of a soft touch. We should have replaced Endo with Palhinha or someone of that mould, a player we can trust to start and properly support Gravenberch in the centre in games like today.

If you can't trust your reserve DM to not start in the most physically bruising game of the year, when we have injuries, then what's the point.

But you still need to try those balls if he's in a good position. If he dies, he dies
lol true but then you have to go back to the last game when slot called out dom losing the ball to a ’stupid flick’ in the final third. we don’t want risky turnovers and newcastle piling even more pressure in.

however dom did another flick that set up chiesas goal later in that game so 🤷

Gakpo’s ceiling is higher than Diaz’s but his baseline is significantly lower.

That's the thing, you can't drill creation out of players. It's more about improving decision making. Flicks are fine, as long as you do it at the right time. Jones and szob are poor at decision-making.

With wirtz he seems sensible with possession but is willing to gamble when the time is right

It was a quite a relief to have won the match, however, Slot's players conceded two goals down to basis football whereas, LFC couldn't cope with at all! Slot and his team will have a very tough season ahead, the squad is very weak, and LFC has become a selling club! We had a light weight and useless in the king Salah, now we have another expensive overpriced lightweight in Wirtz useless too! Bad investment for sure. I thought Szobo played very well ( I don't normally rated him). I can't see the current team will keep a clean sheet this season, the defence quite weak. We need at least three quality players by this week. Rio was the team saver, and he should be used more often. Good luck for next week game.

What a fantastic defensive work by Szoboszlai at the right-back position. He could actually be a much better version of an attacking and midfield-operating right back than TAA. TAA was consistently terrible defensively. What a performance. Gerrardesque.

It's interesting we have scored 9 goals in 3 games and Diaz is still constantly being brought up. Should we be scoring 4 goals a game just to be able to win games now?

We should be playing more. We just stopped playing for some reason. Look at Rio's goal, it was a fantastic move, they had no chance. Everytime we start playing we looked like we can score anytime.

And Konate needs to be dropped and hopefully we can stop shipping goals. Anyone will do, he is that bad now.

Ekitike might need major work + improvement when it comes to holding the ball up and spreading it around. That is a very big Number 9 job. At that instance he was simply not good enough for the PL/Liverpool level.

We couldn't get a foot on the ball and ended up just hoofing it up field.

Someone should have worked out that we had an extra man, somewhere on the pitch.

A midfield of Gravenberch, Jones and Wirtz is just not good enough. Who's stopping Guimares and Joelinton? No one. Wirtz can run into space all he wants but I don't see Jones being able to sustain any form of challenge to feed Wirtz the ball. The long ball was inevitable. We missed a fully fit Macca, the dropoff was massive.

We should have sold Jones and bought Luiz Douglas. He can't be any worse. You simply don't take 20 touches playing against 10 men.

I think its more that we have conceded a lot, and had to win last gasp due to having no control in games. Some of this comes from just giving the ball away and being generally one dimensional and aimless up front on far too many occasions. Diaz gets mentioned because maybe his extra dimension would allow us to keep the ball longer, do more running with the ball vs. punting it into space etc.

Having something different like this would help us take control of a match. We have had zero control of either game so far, and have won because in the 85th minute of each game the players said "holy shit maybe we need to win this" and that isn't a sustainable strategy.

Our problem against the 10 men wasn't keeping hold of the ball too long, though. It was not being able to keep it at all.

I don't understand the concern re Kerkez. He's a 21 year old kid, and for anyone that watched a bit of football bar Liverpool last season could see that he was already then among the top left backs in the league. He's got everything to be a top player so just give him a bit of time to settle in. Thought he was more than enough solid last night anyway.
Needs to do better for the first goal but he'll learn.
Should 100% start against Arsenal.

Same with Wirtz. More than enough solid last night as well, but not easy to make your mark on a game that is less about tactics but more just a fight. Still finished with the highest pass percentage of everyone on the pitch but to little creativity in that hostile environment. Just happy we didnt get any injuries.

Both will be much better in the coming weeks as they settle in. Patience, and no need to overreact on either of them.
