quite a lot, too. anywhere between £12-16m - i think that was even dafter than us singing him in the first place.
I know. They've gotten next to no value out him since then. Mad decision.

still, it was a really, really bad signing in the first place, as you say. it was the only time i ever felt really close to losing faith in Benitez; i just couldn't understand what we were playing at breaking up one of the best partnerships in europe in gerrard and torres with an ageing and never-that-great striker like Keane. i still can't fathom it now.

although, i did always get the feeling that rafa would just rather have sold gerrard, the amount of times he moved him around the team. i don't think he liked having a player in the squad who had so much influence with the supporters. i think it irritated him.

I'd love to see the reaction of the Rafa haters had he paid a combined £65m+ for Carroll, Henderson & Downing. This place would have gone into meltdown......
This.

For all Rafa's transfer mistakes, never did he do anything approaching the 35M that was waxed on Big Dunc.
Oh I don't know, 20M on Keane who was essentially finished by that point is definitely up there.

I'm still amazed Spurs gave us some of our money back for him.
We've been here before. The total cost of Keane would have been £20m but then Spurs agreed to buy him back for the initial payment we had paid them. So in effect we were down on the deal by the signing on fees (to player and agent) and his exorbitant wages.

He was a bad signing yes, but this whole, we lost anywhere between £8-10m on the deal is simply not true - even if Harry Redknapp was involved!

i'd not heard that take on it before mate. i always thought it was a fairly straightforward £19m paid by us, and £12m (apparently 'rising quickly to £16m') paid by them.

where did you hear your version?

Given the comments are largely aimed at me later tonight I'll dig out the 20 or so threads where I've labelled Carroll and Downing as wastes of money.
No need to do that, but please stop banging the anti Rafa drum at every opportunity....

I've heard that from people I know in Liverpool and I'm sure some of the site who have sources have said it and a few Spurs' mates.

I wasn't opposed to the Keane deal at the time, and I'm sure plenty of others saw it as a potentially good signing. For whatever reason it wasn't. Still not totally sure what went on there either.

The problem was that he moved him on very very quickly and then didn't replace him. It was a bit like Houllier did with Diouf - although he didn't move him on he moved him to the right wing instead. It was as if the need for a striker no longer existed.

Now it could well have been that Benitez was not allowed that cash to spend on a replacement, whereas in others years he could (and frequently did) buy a player, decide after a year that he was not good enough, sell him on and try again.
Now maybe he was not told that this money would not be available like it usually was but it doesn't seem like he helped himself. Years of buying players one year and moving them on the next must surely have had an affect on the finances?

I have always thought the same about Gerrard. Houllier was the same with Fowler I think. He was helped by the fact that Fowler declined so he was able to get rid of him, whereas Gerrard never did.

at the time i found the keane signing completely uninspiring, but i'm afraid to say i went along with the crowd and pretended i was happy with it because i thought they must all know something i didn't. it's easy to forget now just how popular a move it was back then - there were hardly any dissenting voices among the fans.

I'd heard this aswell, the total loss was reportedly around about £5m.

There was the odd rumour at the time that Rafa would just as soon have had the money as kept Stevie, but most of the rumours (the ones I heard or read anyway) centred on Stevie's unwillingness/inability to conform to Rafa's highly regimented team set-up rather than on his adulation by the fans.

I thought it was a shit signing at the time. we were crying out for width and in gerrard and torres who had the most deadly strikeful in the country. we pissed away 20 million when that 20 could have been used to by a quality winger...

*cough* like downing *cough*

yes, but i suppose tbf we had to sign a striker given that crouch was sold. the problem was that keane didn't fit in the team OR offer a decent backup to torres when he got injured.

i'm not sure if you're joking about downing.......

I like how he wants this job more than all the other jobs out there as well.

I wouldn't be averse to the idea of bringing him back in either. If Kenny can hand over the job after winning a title that will be best for everyone! There were something that Rafa did right, and i'm pretty sure he would have learned from his time at Inter as well. He is anyway a well decorated manager and he loves Liverpool....which is the most important thing.

two season ago, 20m would have got you a better winger than downing.

£20m will probably get you a better winger than downing 10 years hence, let alone 2 years ago!
in 10 years inflation will make 20m seem like 500,000

Rafael does not need to work for now. He is rich enough. I am not against him managing us again. Hope Kenny can stabilize the team and win us a couple of titles before handing over to Rafael.

When Kenny does finally leave mate i wouldn't totally against the idea of Rafa coming back, but i think it would be far from ideal.

I don't think Kenny will be quick to step down this time (unless things are going badly), so hopefully he'll be with us for the long haul.

That is unless you read the accounts that show we paid 19.3m for him, and we received a guaranteed 12m back from them. Given he's done fuck all since I'd be amazed if any add ons came to fruition. So probably 7.3m lost and a title shot wasted on Keane.

Saying he wants to return to Liverpool is not going to help his prospects in the short-term.

I wish he'd keep his mouth shut and preferably go back to Spain.

I agree with the statement above. I wonder which team in Spain need him the most now. Spanish league suits him. He can stop Barca from winning every fucking trophies under The Lying Rag.
