The Reds boss insists closing a nine-point gap on fourth-placed Tottenham is tough but not insurmountable, particularly as they face many of their closest rivals at Anfield.

"We have nine points difference but we can do it, there is no question about that," he said.

"It is a lot of points to make up but we will fight and accept the challenge in front of us.

"We have had a lot of tough games and we have a lot of what we would consider our big rivals for those (Champions League) positions to play at home.

"Our form at home is getting better, we are scoring goals and are defensively strong so we sense a real opportunity.

"I believe if we continue to play how we have been and retain that focus and mentality we have a terrific chance.

"It is going to be very tough but it is not something which is impossible.

Liverpool's unwanted record this season of not beating a side in the Premier League's top 10 has been used as a stick to beat them with.

Critics have argued the Reds do not have sufficient quality or consistency to make a push for the top four.

However, the next two months will be pivotal as of their eight league matches only one - Tottenham at home - is against a team they can rightly call rivals for a place in Europe's elite club competition.

Starting with West Brom at home on Monday they face Swansea, Wigan, Spurs, Southampton, Aston Villa, West Ham and Reading before the return to Anfield of former boss Rafael Benitez and his Chelsea side on April 20.

It is a perfect opportunity to silence the doubters and put together a run of results which could see them feature in a top-four challenge which seemed unrealistic at the start of the campaign.

"Once we reach the 10 games-to-go mark you are getting to the business end of the season and if we keep progressing like we are then that will make me happy," added the Reds boss.

"But it is more longer term than that. This season was always going to be a season of change, although I did say in the first half we would get better and that is what we have been doing.

"We will fight and give everything we can to get the results to keep our performance level improving.

"The players have done remarkably well up to this point.

"We've had ups and downs through the season and we've lost games we should have won.

"There's no doubt there's been a real shift in mentality of the group but we've still got a long way to go.
"We still have an awful lot of improvements to make, a lot of consistency to find but we are on the right path and that is important.

"My only focus now is the next game. It is very difficult to forecast (results) and look beyond West Brom.

"We have an important couple of weeks coming up in terms of games but the first one is always the most important."

... and there goes the win against West Brom!

"Our form at home is getting better, we are scoring goals and are defensively strong so we sense a real opportunity.

Not sure I agree with the defensively strong bit.

didn't he say similar a few weeks ago before a home game we were expected to win but then we were battered . Maybe the villa game.

anyway 50m spent , time to walk the walk over the next few months .

What's annoying is that both us and Spurs have been 1 man teams this season, yet we have shipped so many shit goals and consequently dropped so many points that we're so far off them.

We have 2 games before Spurs play again.
Pick up 6 points in those and i'll start to believe.

We should shut up and just win instead of talking as much as we have, it always fires back at you. I'm pretty sure Spurs look at the table once in a while.

Yes, Bren, it's well doable if we win every game between now and the end of the season, and everyone above us lose all theirs.

He can't win can rodgers

Think people just don't like him, and I can't fathom out why (except macca, who's privy to some info by the sounds of it)

What's he supposed to say? He's answering questions and gives an answer he's expected to believe in and to say.

He should say that he focuses on three points on Monday eve. Thhat luckily all his 15 international stars (Clarke doens't have that does he) came through the midweek undamaged, and they have worked hard to prepare for the tough test on Monday. Everything beyond monday will happen later on, Now we look to Monday eve 20:00 and make sure we are ready to continue making Anfield a fortress and a place of fear.

To be honest, if we loose on Monday he looks like a silly cod, and his focus should be on monday. He has played his squad to a position that it looks highly unlikely that we will grab the 4th, and hence he should be quite about it.

To be fair I'd happily defend him over this kind of thing. He's asked a question and he responds positively, which is what players want to hear. Benitez did the same. Anything rather than Hodgson's ghastly genuflections.

In the previous two seasons 68 and 69 points were good enough to get 4th position, so we need to almost double our points in 12 games. Grim stats but it may be possible to get 4th on less this year, we need an absolutely fantastic run to be in with a chance of fourth. Can we get 30 points from these fixtures? Not sure about that but winning everything and drawing against Newcastle, Chelsea and Everton = 30 points.
*I tried to put in the table and remaining fixtures but the formatting got all fucked up

fuck sake I was trying to sum where we are and what we need to do up with a league table and fixture list. It looked fine until I clicked post.

We need to double our points in 12 games but the fixtures are kind. We can't afford to fuck up in any games we're expected to win or this 4th idea is done with.

As usual, we need to pretty much win every game we have left.
Looking at our remaining fixtures, it's absolutely doable.
However we have a defence that is currently leaking in goals. If we manage to plug that hole. We'll not only be in the CL we'll finish 3rd.

I think he should instead focus on the europa cup for Carragher's last game. If he fucks that up based on an idiotic delusion of coming fourth, he should resign now and let Carragher take over. Hi Modo.

Hi.

Absolutely no harm done in talking up our chances, and in the main he is right, he is realistic and not gone over the top. It's about time some of the fans and the players started to believe.

In general I don't mind people talking us up. But that is when we have something to talk about.

We should have been well positioned to grab 4th as both Arse and Chelsea are not delivering this season. Spurs are tough and in my mind they and Everton are probably over performing even if everton shows sign of fatigue. But the pure fact is that we are struggling to build a gap between us and Stoke/WBA/Swansea. That is our level so far. And I woud rather see talk about distancing these teams rather than putting us in the CL bracket. That would have given me feedback that we know were we are and that we are working extreme hard to progress from here. Start to talk about 4th now looks like we don't realize that we could just as well end up 10th as 6th at the moment.

And I take for granted that our fans believe more than they really should. How many "fight for 4th" threads haven't we seen this year? We do believ, or at least we dream and hope.

Trouble is every time we've got round to even a glimmer of hope this season we've gone and done an Oldham.... lets get the points first then mumble quietly about the possibility of ... lets just fucking win tonight eh ...

I'm not sure why Rodgers, Stevie, Sturridge and a few other players are talking up our chances for a Top 4 finish. Sure we're in good form and are scoring goals but we should concentrate on winning games first and racking up the points. Instill confidence in the team and let the media do the talking for us. Lets rather see where we end up at the end of the season.
