QPR lining up summer move for Liverpool FC's Joe Cole
The 29-year-old has struggled to force his way into the first team at Anfield since his fanfare arrival from Chelsea last July and is expected to make a swift return to London, with Tottenham and former club West Ham both reportedly keen on securing his services.
But QPR remain favourites to lure England international Cole back to his home town by willing to match the £90,000-a-week wages he currently earns at Liverpool.
Cole has struggled to settle into life on Merseyside and is understood to favour a move back to the capital, which has opened the door for the Hoops to herald their return to the top flight with his capture expected to be the first of many new faces arriving at Loftus Road in the close season.
But Kenny Dalglish appears intent on keeping Cole after lavishing praise on him during his pre-match press conference to preview Sunday's visit of Newcastle and leapt to the midfielder's defender when his desire to succeed at Liverpool was questioned.
“Joe Cole's been fantastic since I came here. His application and dedication on the training pitch has been superb,†said the Kop boss.
“Even this week he's got a day off but he came in Tuesday to train so Joe's attitude has been brilliant and anything that he gets, he fully deserves.â€
He added: “Has he got the desire? I think you're insulting the boy there. You're insulting the boy to ask if he's got desire.
