We won't be able to afford two of Sanchez, Aguero, Hazard and Mata.

However we might be able to afford one of them and then one of Downing, Young or N'Zogbia.

Young is going to United it seems and many people have question marks about N'zogbia's attitude, not his talent.

Downing is the type of player who will give Carroll the right service Carroll needs and is a team player, so I can see why we might be going for him.

Will Liverpool ever buy a good skilful tricky winger who will beat men throughout the game? Probably not...
probably not unless we turn suarez into winger like kuyt

When can we start signing players?
June 1st I think.

I'd be more than happy with Downing if he wasn't the marquee signing of the summer. For example Hazard, Downing, Squadies would be just fine!
If we get Downing it will be like that dreadful feeling of all last summer saying "please dont buy Koncheskey" and then us actually buying him.

Please not Downing.
Agreed.

It'll be a huge downer if we end up signing players of his quality this summer

Looks like he won't be coming to us, probably not worth that money anyway:

Real Madrid are favourites to land Benfica left-back Fabio Coentrao.

Correio da Manha says Benfica have accepted a €25 million offer from Real for Coentrao, with another €5 million due based on appearances and success.

The Portugal international is regarded among the best young fullbacks in Europe and was also being chased by Manchester City and Chelsea.

Coentrao has previous experience in Spain after a low-key loan at Real Zaragoza and shares the same agent as Real coach Jose Mourinho.

Been staying away from Facebook if you didn't notice. And I can mute key words on Twitter so it's not that bad. Still pisses me off though seeing so many avatars of them winning 19.

On the subject of Downing, just to give you a bit of perspective, these are his career EPL stats:

2001-02 Goals – 0, Assists – 0
2002-03 Goals – 1, Assists – 0
2003-04 Goals – 3, Assists – 2
2004-05 Goals – 6, Assists – 11
2005-06 Goals – 1, Assists – 4
2006-07 Goals – 2, Assists – 12
2007-08 Goals – 10, Assists – 5
2008-09 Goals – 2, Assists – 6
2009-10 Goals – 3, Assists – 6
2010-11 Goals – 8, Assists – 7

That’s about two half-decent seasons in 10 years. Comparable to the likes of Leon Osman, Park Ji Sung, Morten Gamst Pedersen. Inferior to both Kuyt and Benayoun. Add that to the fact that he’s got not much pace or skill of note to actually contribute much other than what you see in his end product. And the fact that he’s 27 and spent 10 seasons in the PL playing for lower mid-table sides.

He’s the dictionary definition of average. Anyone who thinks he’ll be a ‘good’ signing is positively retarded. I’d take him if we were buying him for about £5m as a replacement for Maxi. I’ll puke violently if he’s our ‘star’ winger signing of the summer.

Mata is a far superior talent to Downing, but I'm not sure he's what we need or if he'll be very successful in England.

We desperately need someone with pace and directness and Mata is more of a goal gettting left sided forward rather than a winger who can stretch defences.

That's 4 decent seasons I think for a 'pure winger' ... And let's also remember the shit teams he was playing for ... I am not big on Downing, he's a good player BUT he's not as bad as you're painting him to be.

I don't think anyone is saying they'd be terribly happy if he was our 'star' signing.

However he is a good player and a much improved one the last few years (think he suffered a bad injury last or the season before which probably affected those stats.

But football isn't done on spreadsheets. It is about producing a good team and Downing is a good team player and one who can feed Carroll and should suit our brand of football under Dalglish.

I fully expect us to sign someone like Mata, along with Downing. As I expect Cole and Jovanovic to leave, Babel left and wasn't replaced so we could see - Mata, Downing and Marveaux as three replacements. I think that would see significant strengthening.
