I'd want us to sign better players, but he's not as bad as being made out. As long as it's not stupid money I'm not arsed. Fantastic crosser, decent pace, good at striking the ball and he's a good team player. Young tries to do it all, downing is like kuyt

But not as deadly obv

No one is seriously suggesting he's terrible. All comments are coming from a place of wanting a better option to be starting for us next season.

When you keep saying you like Downing, are you suggesting that you'd be quite happy for him to be a first teamer next season (he wouldn't be coming to sit on the bench)?

There's no way I can see Kenny beeing in for Downing. Decent player but we can do much better - and will.

If we only bought downing I wouldn't mind depending on the formation we play. If we stick with the current one I wouldnt mind as we would still have quality in attack and midfield. In a 442 I'd want a pacier option.

I'd still want better than him, but he's not the end of the world

Well, I believe your word more than my intuition on this one.

Dammit.

he's better than what we've got but that means fuck all. once we buy him, he'll be on fat wages and we'll be condemned to him for years to come. we need much better than him.

There can be a bit of fence sitting and covering all bases in the "he's a good player, but..." argument, but if you genuinely do think he'd be a good transfer regardless of other factors, then that's fair enough.

I agree that he's proven to be a good player for Aston Villa, but I question whether that is enough for us. The concern I have about "good for the team" type players is that if you're still lacking a couple of top class players to bring out of the best of the rest, the team just isn't going to be good enough. Not for our aspirations.

If our line-up next season is, for example, Reina, Johnson, Carra, Cahill, Enrique, Lucas, Adam, Gerrard, Downing, Suarez, Carroll - I think top four will be a struggle again. And we'll have spent a good 50-60M on that lot.

If we do as City or Chelsea have done in recent years and buy as many decent players as we can to be part of the squad, it's going to give us good strength in depth potentially. I don't see us doing that though.

no guarantee over the wages, especilly with how things are run now. Villa were shit this year so it wouldn't surprise me if people left to try and win things

I'm sceptical myself to be honest Kris - every coming out of the Villa side of things points to him signing a new deal there.

I am with Fabio on this one as I quite like Downing too.

Of course there are more exciting, sexy players out there but Downing is a more than decent hard working player and would improve our side easily.
If it was a straight choice between him and Young the I would choose Downing every time over the other lazy fecker.

If nothing else, Man U have demonstrated that a team with a few world class players surrounded by talented hard working players, can make a very successful side.

i think downing is good and will improve us

i also think that we will buy quality elsewhere so that the team players can help the wprld class talents shine. outlet

downing will be in a position where we need world class talent, though. where else are we gonna put these world class players we're meant to be buying?

I agree with Fabio. I don't think the majority is guaranteed a first team spot next season, so Downing will start some and be on the bench for some. Like I said earlier, he offers good balance for us down the left. However, if he is the ONLY winger that we're signing then I will be pissed.

That is true. Valencia, who most Utd fans say they missed terribly, is comparable to Downing in terms of quality as far as I'm concerned.

The sad truth is, Downing would improve our team markedly. I'd still like to improve more though.

I think we need competition to keep players on their toes Skully. Granted, a world class player will offer more, but what is he's unmotivated/injured/out of form? Having another option would be useful in this situation.

Thats true enough, but how many wingers will we get in one window?

If it is Downing then its probablu just him

I dont think we'll be signing just one Avvy, tbh. We can't afford 2 world class ones, so one world class winger and another serviceable one who knows the league should suffice.

Young is going to United.

We want Downing. Downing has the same agent as Carragher (as did Keane) and he really wants to come here. According to Dave Usher Arsenal and Spurs also want Downing, but he wants to come here. We just need to agree a price with Villa, although Dalglish really wants him apparently.

He is far better than any wide player we have here at present. He won't beat defenders with blistering pace like Ronaldo or Messi, but he can put in very good crosses and that is what we need to get the best out of Carroll.

Dalglish bought Ripley and Wilcox, two unfashionable players, like Downing, to supply Shearer and Sutton - which won Blackburn the league.

Downing scored 7 goals this season, got 7 assists and has looked better than Young when I have seen Villa this seaosn, he has a better final ball in my opinion.

I hope we also bring in another wide player, such as Hazard. But I'd be happy with Downing, as he should help Carroll and is better than what we have.

You don't need XI world beaters to win the league, especially when you play the type of football we play under Dalglish with lots of pass and move.

Downing is underated and I think he'll be a shrewd buy.

Young at Utd would mean competing with Valencia and Nani to get into the side...might not be the wisest of moves.
