It seems to be working out well, doesn't it ?

Top 4 and a Cl Semi is a good achievement in any year.

I was toying with the idea of doing a thread that if we win the CL and Salah goes, would you resent him?

I honestly don't know if I could. It's been the most ridiculous season for him, and he seems a thoroughly nice bloke, AND brought us big ears?

Only downside is he'd play for a cunt club (Barca, real or psg) so I wouldn't wish him success.

It wouldn't have turned out this well without VvD ... that was key ... Better 'team' but also far better, and more confident, defense.

Our attack is better without coutinho

Our midfield more balanced

Manes form has dramatically improved since coutinho left, we have more drive and energy in midfield.

Klopp kind of said it that mane was getting smothered by coutinho, because he always wanted to run in to the space mane wanted to exploit.

Obviously Virgil has settled the defence and is commanding the line (shame Matip won't listen), so his acquisition as well as losing coutinho, has improved us

I still don't get why Coutinho didn't stick it out until the end of the season. Nobody out of all 3 parties benefited from that move. Unless of course it meant that we could sign Van Dijk. Then we benefited.

We're in the semis and got virgil

We defo benefitted

Like fuck he would have harried like milner, or ox, or Gini

Like fuck he'd put his body on the line

He'd cut in from the left and have a shot 5 times and test the keeper twice

Arsed

Not sure how Coutinho would have fit in yesterday. We needed craftsmen to run the socks off in midfield and not Coutinho. So With that price we clearly benefitted.

Oh no I get all that. I'm just assuming we beat City anyway with him in the squad.

I agree. But it appears couldn't have signed VvD without selling Coutinho.

So sacrificing Coutinho with a definite plan for the money appears to be working out so far.

I expected Lallana would have had to feature in replacing Coutinho but even he has barely played

I wish we could have kept Phil and got VVD but that probably wasn't an option.

The balance of the team is now better. See the difference between 3-0 up against City, and 3-0 up against Arsenal.

Also, with Phil playing on the left of a midfield 3, he was affecting Mane negatively. They were playing in the same spaces, and Phil was either looking to shoot from range, or to play the killer ball to Mo Salah, as opposed to ever slipping Mane in. I think Mane said as much in an interview once ("Phil never passes to me" as he chuckled).

Klopp took an unbelievable (sackable) risk in selling Phil and not bringing in Keita, as well as waiting on VVD, but if we achieve top 4 then it's paid off again (last year, he took a huge risk with such a wafer thin squad).

We tried to sign VvD before Barca came in for Cuntyo. Every reputable source close to the club has said that the money to sign VVD was not contingent on selling him.

I Guess we knew we would have a big payday from his departure anyway, so it is more the timing that is surprising.

Yeah but what's leaked to the press and what's real don't always marry up

Still doubt we could have got Suarez without selling Torres, in spite of the rhetoric from the club

Maybe the keita fee was to be offset by the coutinho one instead. But it seems odd that we didn't buy until he was sold

I think the midfield are getting greater confidence to high press with a stable back line and trusted leadership behind them. So many positives across the team from VVD coming in.

We bought VvD first, didn't we?

if we genuinely have the cuntinho money to spend, and we're going to earn 70 mill plus from the champions league now, we could be in a position to attract a world class player or two in the summer.

You think there weren't negotiations between clubs during the season?

We got to save face by buying first

Was only a few days anyway, not like a season
We clearly did EVERYTHING we could to hang onto Cuntyo. And we clearly did all we could to sign VvD. This is known. The idea that we needed to sell to buy runs contrary to all the known info.

Clearly? We offered him more money. End of the day, as we've seen with Can, money means fuck all if someone wants out.

We refused to sell him in the summer because saints threatened to do us for tapping up. We stood firm because the fans would fucking go ape shit, justifiably.

Clearly there's 2 narratives to this. The misery cynic and the optimistic believer.

I'm defo former.

Why would we offer more money at all if we wanted to sell him? As I say, we were attempting to sign VvD BEFORE there was any talk of a Barca offer for Cuntyo. No, there's the conspiracy tinfoil hat cynic, and the person who accepts the info that has come from every reputable source. Whilst in many walks of life I am the former, in this I am the latter.

?Barca have openly been tapping him up for 2 years

We've been after van Dijk since last Jan.

Well anyway, there's evidence for both sides (in spite of what you say doc)

Tapping isn't the same as bidding. Believe what you want Fabs, but it's nonsense. We did everything we could to resist this, and the attempt to buy Cuntyo was absolutely not welcome, something made clear at every level of the club.

You're right Modo. There is a third narrative. That we sold Cuntyo because he deserved to go to a bigger better club who wins things.
Well he is, isn't he?
Might just end up with a CL medal as well.

I wasn't worried about him leaving. You guys were.

And the stuff from saints over van Dijk was so receptive?

Again, I'm not discounting your argument (as you so blindingly want to with mine). I just think it's reliant on taking things at fave value From the club, who have a lot to lose if they fucked it up.

Why sell coutinho at all? Not like he hadn't already thrown his toys out the pram in the summer. We could have held on for the season. He didnt have 6 months left and wouldn't have downed tools in a world cup year.
