Should Rooney walk back in later?

Simple question. On the back of:

* Decent form so far without him, and our other attackers scoring goals.

* Years of poor form from him at International level, despite his World Class quality and club level performance.

* Being instrumental and largely overlooked in the Lampard/Gerrard problem, again for years. As he also likes to drop into similar positions, cluttering the advanced midfield area.

* The fact he was a complete cretin and nearly ruined our chances of progression in the competition with a typical act of selfishness, hotheaded-ness and stupidity..

Tbh, I think Roy is making a mistake. You have a team that is playing well, and has got two positive results without him. He should earn his way back into the team ... If for some reason - and it shouldn't happen - England lose to Ukraine tonight, it would hopefully destroy him.

The thing is, I don't think Roy can win unless WE win.

* Play Rooney and we win, it's a masterstroke bringing him back in.

* Don't play Rooney and we win, it's a masterstroke not bringing him back in.

* Play Rooney and we lose, it's a fuck up.

* Don't play Rooney and we lose, it's a fuck up and all the United loving hacks will murder Roy.

See, i don't get why he should walk back in because the squad just wouldn't make sense to me. Welbeck doesn't play on the last defender so he will clutter with rooney; this doesn't affect UTD because they have wingers who WILL bomb on, england dont. Milner is playing defensive and shite whilst young has just been shite.

The problem then too of course is that rooney does like to come deep (as well as welbeck), meaning we'll have fuck all in the box

The players we have, the only one i think that could work quite well with rooney is defoe, as he'll stay near the box...but he's a bit shite.

Carroll i don't think would work as he would then need rooney to run off him continualy (something welbeck is good at as the cunt doesn't stop moving)

But he will pay because the media want him to.

So...yeah.

Read somewhere that Carroll will be dropped tonight. Shame cause he was very good against Sweden.

I think so, yes.

He's quality.
He definitely is a quality player

But he's largely a bit jarg for england.

He'll play, probably have a stormer, we'll get through, then in the quarters he'll be shite and probably a tit.

No one will remember hi being shite in that game, and the blame will be pinned on which ever poor bastard makes a solitary mistake. My guess is whoever is partnering Terry.

Rooney will play because Welbeck is playing. It's a no-brainer.

However, Fabio Just highlighted all the reasons he shouldn't walk back in. But I doubt Hodgson will see it like that.

That's all true. The real question is whether Hodgson knows how to get the best out of someone like Rooney. Ferguson has managed it, as did Moyes, but no England manager has ever achieved it. It seems to me that players like Carroll are more befitting of Hodgsons "methods", so it will be interesting to see what sort of set-up he goes for.

We've done pretty well so far, but when we come up against a side of real quality, I think we'll be outclassed and clinging onto a bit of luck. I'm hoping the inclusion Rooney will tip the balance.

Well i wouldnt play him.
But if you take a player who is banned for 2 games in a 3 game group you pretty much guarantee him game 3.

Sven did in Euro 2004.

After listening to all the Rooney hype on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, I "layed" the "Rooney to Score" bet on Betfair.

At least that should guarantee England a goal! 🙄

The way I see it, Rooney is a good player but not a world-class one. He will also be lacking that elusive quality, match-fitness. I can't see him performing miracles. I hope I'm wrong. 🙂

We would have done portugal in 2004 if shrek hadnt snapped his damn foot...

For me in 2004 was the only time Rooney has impressed me in an England shirt...

I hope he comes on and plays well.

And as for the press, just for once it was at a tournament it wasnt actually cringeworthy to read the English press, nearly all the talk dampening down expectations and the like... then today BAM!! tubthumping jingoistic shite rolls out again...

We are playing Ukraine in the Ukraine in a major tournament they will be desperate to stay in... Im shitting it personally.

He's not alone there though.

Most of the squad have either been shit for England or shit for their clubs, and Rooney is a better player than all of them.

He is, but he's been shite for England, by and large.

Indeed.

In fact quality or not he is a player I find very hard to enjoy watching, he isnt especially fast nor tricky he is pretty streaky, maybe im just blind to him because I cant stand the goyt but i cant see why people rave about him tbh

I'd simply play him where Fergie played him against us at Anfield.

Central midfield, almost, but not quite, as a DM. He has remarkably restrained in that role & pretty effective, & still managed the occasional foray forwards.

Damn sight better than Scott 'runs round like a headless chicken' Parker. Simply put, he's a much better midfielder than any of the other midfielders, bar Gerrard.

Never gonna happen though, unfortunately.

I'd drop him just to shut the media up, it's been like the second coming in the papers and on the news today it's horrific. Carroll and Welbeck looked good against Sweden and deserve to start tonight, i'd bring Rooney on at half time or something like that.

I hope he has been training hard. He looked fat when he came on against Belguim a few weeks ago, too many pies on holiday.

Carrol will come on if Rooney is struggling, its the right decision to start him.

I just hope Roy drops Young who has been pathetic, where has his form gone

Let's be real. Rooney is probably the best player in the England squad. He has to play.
If Carroll is the one who has to make way for him, the so be it.
Personally, I'd play all three of them. Bench Young and move Welbeck to the left.

------------Gerrard Parker

Walcott-------Rooney---------Welbeck
---------------------Carroll

Id love that team Modo.
But sadly Roy lacks the testicular fortitude for such adventurism.

At least if Carroll doesn't play it's one less opportunity to get injured!

We lost a lot out of Michael Owen's career due to injuries he sustained playing for England.

He hasnt played for 6 weeks apart from 35 mins against Belgium - he cannot be match fit - he would be on the bench for me as we need a win. Bring him on in the second half as Ukraine have finished their games better than they started so far and he could be more useful at that end of the game.

Tony makes a good and valid point. if Rooney starts tonight it will show Roy is not his own man. He will be bowing to the media pressure. Rooney like every other player doesn't have a divine right to a starting place but thats just my own opinion.

Carroll and Welbeck have shown enough together for England to get a win. Rooney should earn the right to play.

Him not playing for 6 weeks, means he's fresh. He hasn't been injured and he's been training with the team, I don't see how this is a problem.
If this was Gerrard, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

This us what I think, the team have done ok thus far without him, he won't be match fit , if needed bring him off the bench, its common sense.
