Heyyyyyyyyyy.

We would have got a 100M for him. Suarez bite cost us 25M. That was an expensive bit of business.

Suppose a 200%+ profit is great business. Thats the consolation.

I think it was a decent deal. But, I look at the real scarcity of world class strikers, let alone really creative ones like Suarez, and I do wonder if even at 27 we might have got more for him. Barca agreed to the fee pretty snappily.

The clause messed us up but we would have definately got more even at 27. Suarez offers what no other striker in world football does. He is a ball of energy who guarantees goals.

Personally, I would have preferred he stayed for another season.

Yeah. I think we probably could have got them to £85m plus say £10m in add ons.

Oh well.

75m for a player who had a clause at 40m last summer, who has 2 peak years left with little sell on value for the purchasing club? We really cannot complain because there was no other offered diving up the price.

I meant that I think it was a mistake to insert the clause.

Doubt he would have signed the contract if we hadn't. From the sounds of it Suarez had made it pretty clear to the club he wanted to go to Spain sooner or later, so it was just a question of setting a price that we thought we could reasonably get but wasn't underselling him.

Why did we need him to sign the contract? He'd only signed one the year before.

I suppose technically we didn't, but we would probably have run the risk of coming into conflict with him every summer if Barca/Real bid something he thought was acceptable which we didn't.

Without the inserted clause and bidding war, we could have got more. Its the measure of his immense talent despite his age.

That we inserted the clause, we were aware that it would be a matter of time before he was off and the bidding war between Barca and Real didn't materialise. The bite incident affected his value.

Yeah, I think that's right. It was a sort of truce, a tidying up exercise. It might well have been the thing to do, it's hard to judge from the outside.

But I do think that based on things as they actually are - ie the form he showed last season - I think we could have got more.

If Barca aren't allowed to unveil him i'm surprised they haven't called signing a contract a 'football related activity'

They allowed for the transfer activity but I'm past the point of caring with a bulging bank account

It all seemed a bit agenda-ish to allow the transfer but stop him being allowed to even step in a stadium. Ban him, but keep the profile of top class players going to the richest clubs going eh? Commercial bullshit.

CAS will reduce the ban and Barca will be smiling. Shirt sales are probabl;y through the roof already.

Exactly - and, to be absolutely fair to the guy, he could perfectly well have refused.

Yeah, what a stand up guy. He could have so easily refused to be held to a large pay increase and a guarantee to be allowed to join Barcelona. But he came through for us. It's beautiful, in a way.

I hope he stays at Barca anyway, I couldn't stomach them getting rid of him next Summer and him coming back over here to Arsenal/Chelsea/City.

He'd have got himself millions extra if he'd stuck to the previous deal, forced a move this summer and got the kickback from Barca which that would have involved.

He is a brilliant player.... just brilliant. The way he scares opposite defenders by being named on the teamsheet will be sorely missed.

Then again, maybe defenders were beginning to get used to him. His old way of trying to run through them, which was so striking and effective at the start, was beginning to look a bit strained in the latter part of last season. Maybe he was mentally fatigued but he seemed to trick his way through less often in the last few months. But he's gone anyway, so we move on.
