So who do we want/expect/hope?

Are we playing CL football? No!! Low will go to a team with CL football if and when he decides to leave Germany.

So the only manager in the world with CL experience who's willing to go near us is.....Rafa?

Who did well it cups but failed miserably in their league campaign ? Really moo, really ?

Only saw them in Europa league and thought they played good football. Not seen any la liga or paid any interest to it this year, so was unaware of their league form.

With Rafa it's a bit of a shit situation.

If we we gave him 100m we'd probably get two great players out of it, one good squaddie and shitload of useless bastards.

We'd also probably play better and make it into the CL after a couple of season if we gave him 50-60m to spend every year (with roughly the same success ratio in terms of the signings).

Once in the CL we'd probably be very competitive, though I doubt we'd be in any finals these days.

And we'd also, in all likelihod, never win the league.

don't know these guys you mentioned in detail (apart from biesla), but what have they WON? what do they bring to the table? What have they done which is going to get gerrard, suarez looking up and believing.

Luciano Spalletti won the Serie A Coach of the Year award twice while he was with Roma. Managed to get them challenging for title and honors despite their financial situation back then. Besides challenging for Serie A title (vs. the then "invincible" Inter Milan) also won Coppa Italia twice as well as progressing to Q-Finals of CL. Have since won the Russian title with Zenit St. Petersburg.

Francesco Guidolin have got Udinese challenging for CL qualification for the past 2 seasons, despite their modest budget, esp. when compared to the other sides in Serie A. They finished 4th in the last CL qualification spot, but were unlucky to meet Arsenal in the qualifying round and failed to make it to the group stages, having lost the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Gökhan Inler, and Cristian Zapata in the transfer window.

Odds were stacked against them, with the qualifying spots down to 3 instead of 4 this season, their small squad size (having to cope with Europa League too), injuries (esp. losing Isla for last 1/3 of the season) and not spending the money from the sales. However, he managed to guided them to 3rd place finish, in a tight fight with Lazio and Napoli (64 vs 63 and 61 points - and 6 ahead of Inter).

Coincidentally, both men got their big break via Udinese, are known for their tactical knowledge and attacking football in the Italian game while exceeding expectations in getting Udinese European football qualification .

These 2 men are probably too old for FSG though. 🙄

Maritnez has a win ratio of 27% from 188 games at Wigan. Nice guy and attractive football apart that is pretty bloody rubbish! 1 win in 4!!!

Spalletti is an interesting one, though. As Binny said, he did pretty well at Roma despite their financial situation. Also pioneered that famous 4-6-0 formation, which I thought was very interesting.

He's also done very well with Zenit since then, leading them to back-to-back titles and two other domestic cups as well, all after a largely barren spell in the previous decade.

If we do get a world class manager he will definitely demand substantial transfer funds made available to improve the team before he accepts the job.On the other hand if we are going for the Martineze's category they will jump on the job and bring in the cheap available players like Roy did.

Binny, I think the issue there is that Udinese are about a lot more than the manager.

I see where you're coming from mate. They do have a good board and scouting system etc but they were more or less a top 10 side for the previous 5 seasons, sinking to a low of 15th, before Guidolin's reign.

Fair enough Binny.

On a related point though, do people feel that the manager should speak English? Do all these guys being mentioned speak English?

Not sue if it has been mentioned before, but I'm slightly in favour of Martinez here with the logic being that Pep and Klopp also never won anything before there time with respective clubs as coach. Most Klopp did was bring Mainz up the Bundesliga into Europe, while Pep had only been 'briefly' in charge of the Barca reserves.

Anything's a gamble though, but there have been rumours that if Martinez becomes manager, the owners are keen on hiring Txiki Bergiristain (Barca's former DoF, the dude who hired Pep). And Martinez is apparently Catalan too.

I'm asking for alot aren't I?

Whelan advises Martinez against Reds

May 16, 2012

By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told ESPN that he would advise his manager Roberto Martinez, the favourite to succeed Kenny Dalglish, to steer clear of the vacant manager's position at Liverpool.
Whelan was shocked when ESPN broke the news to him of Dalglish's sacking, even though it had been expected, and he believes that Liverpool need to find a completely new management structure.

"The club have great supporters, but the place is a morgue, a desolate place, without heart, all I can say is what a shame for their supporters," he said.

"The club needs a management structure, it needs a boardroom filled with the people running the club. When we went there, there was Alan Hansen welcoming people, it was a bit embarrassing to be honest, although he was doing his best."

Whelan also insisted that the Reds should be treating the man known as 'the King' with more respect.
"They shouldn't be sacking Kenny Dalglish, they should be making him chairman, let him run the place," he continued. "As for a new manger, I am sure they might want my manager, but he's been the favourite for the West Brom job, then favourite for the Aston Villa job, now he's favourite for the Liverpool job.

"I don't know who they will appoint, they have to sort themselves out, all I can tell you is that I haven't had an approach for Roberto.

"I hope Roberto is with me for the start of the new season, but in football you can never tell. I do know that he is an honest man, and if he is approached by anyone he will tell me about it.

"If Roberto thought he could go to another club because that club was so big and the challenge so great he couldn't resist it, then I would step aside and let him, but I wouldn't think he should go to Liverpool, he would be better off with us."

basically a young manager who is going to mold the team into an attacking unit. it isn't about a manager who has won silverware (we aren't winning the league anytime soon and domestic glory is a distraction for our main target of top 4) it's about building for the long term and developing players rather than going for marquee signings.
the manager and DOF are very important signings.

capello would smack of short termism and we'd have to put up with shit football to boot. if I had a list capello would be near the bottom a few rungs higher than MON.

I want Maureen. He rocks.

I'd be over the moon of we got him...but sadly we won't. He's got possibly the best squad in world football, just won LA Liga, desires to win the Champion's League again and money's no object for Real.

My next choice would be PEP.

Fair enough Binny.

Unfortunately doubt so. Spalletti was apparently expressed concerned about his lack of English when previously linked with Chelsea season ago.

I don't want Martinez.

I get invites to Wigan quite a bit coz my mate has a corporate thing he can't even give away most of the time... so I go and watch the footy and all that kinda thing... and I've never seen anything which made me think he was a tactical genius or anything. It's normally shit.

But we established a long time ago that I'm not too switched on.

whoever we appoint we have to be brave and give them time, we simply cannot become a sacking club. rome wasn't built in a day, we have to view this a long term project.
