Swansea City contact Liverpool FC over Joe Allen but are told they must wait

Swansea made contact with Liverpool to ask about Allen’s availability and the chances of bringing the 25-year-old back home to the Liberty

Swansea City have made an enquiry over Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen – but have been told by Jurgen Klopp they will have to wait until the summer if they want to try and seal a shock homecoming for the Wales star.

Pembroke-born Allen made his name with his performances at boyhood club Swansea before earning a £15m move to Anfield in 2012.

But, despite starring for his country in the historic qualification for Euro 2016, he has struggled to nail down a starting place under new Kop boss Klopp.

With the Swans keen for reinforcements to help play their way out of Premier League relegation worries, it is thought Swansea made contact with Liverpool to ask about Allen’s availability and the chances of bringing the 25-year-old back home to the Liberty.

Yet it is understood the Merseyside giants have made it clear they are not interested in letting Allen leave Anfield this month as they continue to compete on four fronts having reached the knock-out stages of the Europa League and the last-four of the Capital One Cup.

Allen created a social media storm when his ‘no-look pass’ set up Jordan Ibe for the only goal in the semi-final first leg win over Stoke yet, while his performances have seemed to impress, he hasn’t been able to grab a regular spot in Klopp’s Premier League side.

And he will be keen to play his way into form ahead of this summer’s European Championships with the pass-specialist a key part of Chris Coleman’s Wales plans.

Swansea are well aware of Allen’s ability after he emerged from the youth ranks to play a pivotal role in the club’s rise to the Premier League and their first season in the top-flight under Brendan Rodgers, prompting the Northern Irishman to make a then-club record offer to take the diminutive star to Anfield with him by triggering a release clause.

Allen has less than 18 months remaining on his Liverpool contract but suggestions of talks over a new deal have cooled, with Allen recently admitting: “It’s gone very quiet. I’m not too sure really,” Allen is quoted as saying by The Guardian. “I’ve only made one league start this season, so I want to play more. I think that’s obvious for any player in that situation.

“From my point of view, it’s just about knuckling down, doing my job and giving my best, which is always what I do.”

It is not clear how much Liverpool would ask for Allen or, indeed, if they are willing to sell in the summer where Swansea will have hoped to have retained their elite status and look to rebuild a side.

Swansea have limited funds to spend this window – with the club willing to consider cashing-in on some players to free up finances – and the priority spend will be on a striker. Swansea have already banked £12m from the sale of former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey to Newcastle with Jonathan de Guzman a possible

loan replacement while another old boy in Scott Sinclair has also been targeted for a cut-price return to the Liberty.

This is probably a bit like the Borini situation in that we'd get a great fee right now but maybe not in the next window.

I still like him though and he's in decent form

Are Swansea having money issues? Seems to be quite a few players they're trying to ship out, swap, sell or cash in on. Gomis is available to, well, anyone, and Ayew is also up for sale if they can get £12m. Which would be a nice profit of.....£12m.

Didnt Ayew get quite a hefty sign on fee? There was talk of a 5,7 mill fee reported by L'Equipe

We shouldn't sell Allen to Swansea, because he will play well against us and then we'll buy him back for twice the price we get for him.

He'll be off in the summer. But with 12 months left on his contract we probably wont get much more than 5-7 mill for him.

We need to grow some balls and sell the players we don't need when someone wants to buy them. Promote one of the youngsters. It's not like we are doing any good with Allen in the squad.

Yip. The clear out should be starting now

Realistically, there won't be a big difference in fees for him between now and the summer (maybe a low single digit number), so I'd rather keep him until then. He's a decent player and will still come in handy for some of the remaining games, e.g. the cup games - the schedules will get mad again if we go far in the cups, so might as well have him around given the small difference.

The ones we need to get rid of first are those players who're out on loan right now (not the U21s like Canos, but the others like Luis Alberto, Wisdom, etc.).

Complete bollocks.

  1. Today he has 18mths on his contract; in the summer he will be seen as entering countdown to the end of his contract - the clock will be ticking, with a resultant impact on his resale
  2. Secondly, and most importantly, Swansea have a need for players NOW given their relegation risk. He will be seen as a low risk purchase given his history with them, and someone who will make an impact immediately. In the summer if they're in the Championship he wont go. If they're still in the Prem they are likely to do a belt and braces review of their recruitment which may or may not include him - and with their Premiership future assured for at least another year, they will be far more successful in more exotic signings
I would say his resale value to Swansea in this window is probably double what it is in the summer.

Swansea needs Allen for their relegation fight so will likely pay over the odds. They just got 12 for Shelvey so paying 10-12 for Allen wouldn't be out of the question.

Come end of the season when they survived or get relegated, it will be at most 6 or nothing. Seeing how shit we are at our transfers I would say Allen will end up leaving on a free eventually.

And Allen will likely agree to the move with the big Euros coming up. He might just do a Borini MK1 at the end of the season and reject to any move.

Strange thing is, he kinda suits Klopp's style. And he's unlikely to be on mega bucks, so I can see him staying.
Add to that that he would be unlikely to want to drop LFC for what's likely to be a season in the championship next season.

Allen is going to the Euros with a top 10 Fifa ranked country. 12 million minimum. [emoji6]

I think he'll be very good again back at Swansea. It didn't really work out here for him here. He had the odd excellent game for us, especially that time he battered man city.

Against all evidence, I have a feeling that out of the Lucas-Allen midfield "partnership" that never really was one, it's Lucas who will be sold first and Allen will stay on for at least another season.

Strange this as he is only midfielder likely to score. I am really torn on this now.

You clearly don't know how this works. Lucas can never be sold.

I'd like to give him a run of a few games, a bit further forward, before deciding to cut our losses. He's looked pretty good under Klopp and pretty shit under Rodgers.

So he has gone from Welsh Xavi >> To Joe Sideways >> To a Hobbit >> To Joe Pirlo >> To Jesus
