I thought McAteer suffered from playing at right wing back even though he was a central midfielder. I dont remember him ever being given a chance to to play in midfield.

He had a bad injury and then played there against West Ham on his first game back and scored two! I don't think he played much after that though, Evans wasn't half a shit manager at times. People seem to remember this scintillating football we were supposed to have played, for the most part we were shit but were incredibly fortunate to have Fowler and Macca and then Owen coming through.

He bought Berger, Stan and Leonhardsen and didn't know how to play any of them, he even asked Paddy where he liked to play and used him leading the line after being told (by the player) that he liked to play upfront. He dragged him off in the second half of that game and bollocked him for suggesting he could play there.

Uncle Roy was a tinkerman long before Ranieri, but his speciality was signing good players and then turning them to shi!t by messing about with their positions. McAteer was one, as others have rightly said. Roy shoehorned Paddy Berger into the RM position a few times as well. Possibly the worst example of this was Oyvind Leonhardsen, who many LFC supporters reckon was cr@p but who had actually caused us plenty of problems playing as an attacking CM for the Wombles. Roy then signed him and tried to turn him into an RM, which he was never, ever going to be.

JJ, good point on Leonhardsen. He was pretty good for Wimbledon and I was excited when we got him. Suddenly he's struggling out on the wings.

When I think of Paddy Berger I can't help but think about the one that got away. What would Karl Poborský have been like if we had of pulled off that signing.

Yes I also remember being pretty excited when we got Leonhardsen. He had just won their player of the year and a wombles fan I knew was utterly gutted. Then we go and stick him on the wing! Around that time I remember we got John Scales from Wimbledon as well - Although strangely I can't remember if he was any good or not. :-\

Tha Babb & Scales signings happened the same day, I think.

Wouldn't hold my thoughts with highest regard though, I thought they were the last 2 pieces of the jigsaw!

Not for us anyway 🙁
Ha, the final 2 pieces of Fergie's jigsaw.

I thought Scales was good. Sadly he arrived at the same time as Babb though, who was awful.

I don't remember any point in the 90s when our defence was not slightly dodgy for one reason or another.

🙂

I didnt quite understand why Babb was so bad. He had a great world cup. As for Scales, I was quite happy we got him. Composed on the ball, good header, good reader.

Babb and Scales on paper was a great centreback pairing.

Ok, just about!

Heggem was injured a lot mind.
That's true but a lot of people seem to forget he won LFC player of the year. Apparently he runs a salmon fishing business now. 😛

Babb had a great world cup because he was next to Paul McGrath.

I don't think I'd agree with that. He had a great world cup on his own merit I seem to remember. One of the players of the tournament.

Does anyone remember his mate Mark Kennedy? He was the most expensive teenager at the time I remember.

I was at Melwood in 1994 on the Alan Kennedy tour. When Mark Kennedy drove in through the gates none of us recognised him. It took one of the groundstaff to say who he was.

Scales also had hair from the 50's which in my book adds something to a mans character.

Mark Kennedy scored a belter of a goal against the Arse while playing for millwall if I remember. I think that was about all he done.

He should advertise his business. A commercial featuring John Terry making a salmon dive, with large grizzly bear in the background. 🙂

Indeed he was. At about 1.5 million! You don't get much for that in football these days.

The only 2 players we have ever signed from Millwall were in the 90s. The other was Jimmy Carter. Worst record ever.

Jimmy Carter? I'm sure we actually signed the former US president. He couldn't have been any worse!

Maybe that was it. Kenny got the wrong Jimmy Carter. He was under quite a bit of stress at the time. I think he signed David Speedie a few weeks later

It seemed quite odd at the time that Carter signed for Arsenal after us. Mind you, George Graham was still there then, so maybe not.

I won't have a word said against David Speedie. Goals on his debuts against Man Utd and Everton abstains him from every sin!

i LOVED SPEEDIE
I met him once in a pub in London. I was introduced to him by a mate and in my defence I was battered, but I told him I loved him for putting one past Utd on debut at OT and then followed that up by putting two past the Binman at home against Everton. I then said he was a legend *shakes head at memory*

He looked scared but then said, that's the thing about LFC fans, they remember everything. He then spent the rest of this time there avoiding my stalker like antics.

Isn't he a racist? I vaguely remember something in the press a few years ago.

Agreed! I know he turned out to be a bit rubbish in the end but at the time we bought him he was highly thought of. A quick look on Wikipedia confirms that he played 12 games and scored 6 goals. That is not bad.
