Being a student out of term time with nothing to do, i'm having a relaxing day with Football Manager and watching The Treble Season DVD - Fuck me Owen was good, and Babbel insane - if Johnson is nearly as good as him we're sorted for the next decade!

As a team though it shows how far we've come over the last 9 years... The voice over guy at the beginning is jizzing himself over the prospect of Champions League footy for the next season, something we've come to expect nowadays..

Which is almost what we thought about Babbel at the time! Things can change very quickly!

During that one season Babbel was as good as any Liverpool RB I've ever seen, and I go back to Shanks' time. Strange to think he didn't want to play there to begin with (he was signed as a CB but looked poor in that position).  His illness was tragic in more ways than one.

I'd actually take our defence from that season in preference to the one we've got now, but overall you're right, we have definitely improved.

Since the treble season they added a CL place to the Premiership which is largely why we 'expect' to be in it

We have progressed though, I just don't think that's a fair measurement.

Really? I'd love a young Sami/Jamie to have again but Agger and Skrtel are so superior to Henchoz it's a joke

And since then we've won it, been to a final and been to two other semi-finals. Along the way we've beaten Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter, Chelsea and many more. None of which we could have 'expected' to do then.

Sorry mate but that simply is not true. Henchoz was a great player and his partnership with Hyypia was excellent.

Yep, and apart from 1 season under Rafa, we've not needed that extra place awarded to the Premier League in order to qualify for the Champions League. Arsenal has benefited from that extra place far more than we have.

Stevie and Jamie..There's got to be more..
[/quote]

Not that I can think of.

Remember Gerrard was only 20/21 then and was one of the youngest in the team. Even he is 29 now.

It doesn't seem long ago but it really was. If you go back 8 years from 2000/01 then it would be the same story. Probably only a couple of players.

How many of our players now do you reckon will be around in 8 years?

Look at the players we had in the eight years up to the treble winning season. It's not hard to understand why we won bugger all apart from the league cup.

We did have some good individual players at that time. Fowler, McManaman, Redknapp, Collymore, Barnes, Rush, Berger.

Problem was they were all attacking players. Our defence was pretty fucking shoddy for most of that time.

Babel insane? Do you mean as in mad, or as in very good? Because dont get me wrong, he was good, but he wasn't that good.

Yes he was.

Babbel was superb. The best right back in the league then.

I said we've progressed and you highlight points how we've flourished in Europe ? Er, thanks.

I must stress that it was the right, logical decision to award the Premiership with one of the German League spots, because our league had dramatically risen in quality in comparison. We've always deserved to be included, and the results you put forward are  testament to that. But the idea of measuring our progress by expecting to qualify for the CL year in year out is clearly flawed; since the change came in 03/04, we've qualified twice finishing forth (and fortunately once finishing 5th), had it not happened we wouldn't be expecting it year in, year out. That's not dismissing our achievements - it's a simple fact. And the extra revenue we've received has aided us in progressing further.

Our rise in league positions is a much more encouraging statistic, IMO.

You appeared to be attributing our increased expectations to that fact that there is an extra CL place available to us, whereas I was making the point that our increased expectation is down to the fact that we have performed to such a consistently high standard in Europe.
