According to a fella on RAWK we're close to agreeing a fee.
[/quote]If it is the same lad he also said that Spurs were also negotiating with Blackburn.
You may want to adjust the meter percentages Ryan

I really don't know why people are getting so excited about this lad. I really don't think he's as good as some are making out.

From the bits I've seen of him, he lacks the pace of a Walcott or a Lennon but has better end product. He is quicker than those annoyingly slow wide men like Bentley, Brunt, Gamst Pedersen - so potentially an exciting signing; speedy(ish) with decent end product.

Drowning like pace then?

a lack of pace doesn't look to be a problem to me. it's better to be agile and skillful and nippy if you want to beat a man than just having that extra yard of pace like walcott or bale - that's downing's problem imo, rather than pure speed.

He reminds me of Babel but Junior looks like his feet and brain are working in tandem.

I really like him as a player. He would be a breath of fresh air for us getting at players with the confidence to go past them without stopping to give it back to Enrique.

Doubt he's as good as Babel on twitter but the lad can't have it all.

he doesn't remind me of babel at all! looks all about tricks and creative passing, from the admittedly little i've seen of him; actually more similar to someone like nasri than a SWP or a lennon.

Y'see if I were Kenny I'd have been in favour of signing Downing but for no more than £10m i.e. he's a decent squad player. In that every player has a price, yes I'd be in favour of signing him but for no more than £8m (I'd risk £12m but with his contract down to 6 months we don't have to).

Does anyone truely believe Hoilett is the answer to our prayers?

Genuine question.

Haven't seen him enough myself to know whether he'd be one for the future or one who's step right in and make us better from day one. Whenever I've seen him I must admit I haven't been that impressed mind.

We could have had Johnson from City for less than £20m (instead of Downing), couldn't we?

I doubt any of us on here have seen enough of him to judge accurately. I like what I've seen, he seems to be an impact player and he seems very confident in his own ability - these are 2 traits I particularly like.

it shouldn't be about 'the final piece of the puzzle' it should be about attempting to sign quality players when they become available.

He's young, cheap and would improve us, thats how I see it. He's not going to transform us into Barca though.

look at rednapp who has amassed quality players relatively cheaply and now they are geniune title contenders

We're a long way away from needing a final piece of the puzzle, if such thing actually exists.

City finished third last season, and bought 5 players for a total of 82million, while only selling 25m worth. We need to be doing something similar this year to get up a few places. As well as hoping that the players we buy are successes. Everything would have to go perfectly for the next few transfer windows for us to really be in with a chance of a title.

We do need to buy well and add probably two or three key players, but we're also amassing a talented squad which now has depth. What it does lack though is pace in attacking areas. We've basically got Suarez and Bellamy who have out and out pace, and then you have the likes of Gerrard and Downing. We saw against City how much we lack an outlet, it's not the be all and end all but it's one of those things we lack and we need. So in that sense Hoilett (though I'm already seeing the Brendan-esque 'Toilet' jibes now) would be a good addition and in line with our current policy of young British (based).

In the long run though we need a quality striker, a top wide player and another midfielder. Kuyt and Maxi are on their last legs and that basically leaves us with Downing and Bellamy for the wide berths, the latter himself isn't getting any younger either.

I see us finishing 5th this year. a good transfer window would make us genuine cl place challengers. I think only the acquisition of 3 (or more) quality players will make us genuine title contenders.

He hasn't really, until this year because Spurs made their first financial loss in ages when they let Harry go shopping.
Comolli and Arnesen built the cheap and effective part of that current Spurs squad.

Harry wasn't aware of the VDV deal until it was done. He brought in Pienaar, Khumalo (?), Gallas last year - Gallas is the only one to have made any impact. Kranjar, Bassong, Crouch, Kaboul, Sandro, Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker in 2009. Only Walker is a regular of that lot. Before that he brought in Palacios, Defoe, Cudicini, Chimbonda and Keane. None of them were good enough to play regularly for long.

He did his usual buying up of experienced Premiership players, bumping up the wage bill and spending in an unsustainable manner.

We spent lots of money on players that weren't good enough between 2008 to present and look where it got us, Sunderland did the same when they splurged, so did Villa. Harry's wastefulness is going to cost Spurs. He'll leave right before it happens though, and then people can argue it's not his fault.

do you think we have a cost effective squad now?

Harsh in the extreme and I'm far from being 'arry's biggest fan. He added Modric and Adebayor who've more or less transformed them and made them contenders (at least for the CL places anyway). He might have added shite but he's also brought in players that have brought them to the fore. He's also been the one who's brought Bale on as a player, you could argue that would have happened anyway, but he's been the manager and got the best from him.

As for the players listed, well they were the stepping stones, it's easy to say now they were failures, they helped Spurs maintain a healthy squad with depth and variation, which has enabled them to climb to where they are now. Defoe hasn't been a failure, he's had his purple patches but that's what's got them the points during those spells.
