I thought Kelly had a very good game yesterday, so assuming Magic is fit for our next game who should Kenny play?

When everyone is fit i think we've only got around 3 automatic starters and for me Magic isn't one of them.

I agree
Even during his successful lb stint, Johnson wasn't an automatic starter for me. Full backs should be good defenders first and good attackers second. Kelly is better than Glen defensively so as far as im concerned, that's that

Before he got injured last year I thought Kelly had a few MOM games.

It's a tough call, but a good problem. Could we see the much vaunted Magic at RW?

Kelly deserves to keep his place. Johnson on the bench to be used as cover at rb, lb or as an option on the right wing.

worth noting that with kelly doing a good job then johnson should be allowed to properly recover from his inuries and the same goes for gerrard (with the option we have for CM).

johnson...by a mile.
kelly needn't worry though as johnson will crock himself after a couple of games.

I pick players based on how they fit into the team dynamic and johnson will benefit the team more especially if henderson is to keep his place.

Did you watch what Kelly was doing yesterday? He can attack well, he can defender better than Johnson ever will ...

First off, automatic starters for me would be more than just three.
Reina, Enrique, Agger, Carra (that is if Cahill doesnt join), Lucas, Meireles, Gerrard and Suarez.

Second, I do agree that Johnson has to fight to get his spot back. There are days when he plays like the best RB in England and other days when he looks like League one fullback.
If Kelly continues to play like he did yesterday I don't see why Johnson should get ahead of him. Still don't understand why Kenny opted for Flanagan against Sunderland.
Anyway, Kelly and Johnson both have a somewhat long injury record so between them, I'd say that we're covered at RB.

ever will is a 'slight' exaggeration. the moment johnson is fit, if he doesnt go straight in I will be amazed. we are a more potent team with johnson in it and first and foremost we should be trying to win games. but I digress, johnson is injury prone so will be in and out of the side.

"by a mile". Why?
[/quote]

because he is far better going forwards (FAR better) and the defensive side of his game is underestimated. for instance last season, if someone went past him on the left I must have missed it.

anyhow, each to their own but I think johnson should be straight in the side when he is fit again.

But he's not going to be vying for LB with Kelly, it's RB where he was very poor in many games (just ask Mark1975)

On merit, when both fit, it's an incredibly tough call. I think Johnson would shade it. But as we are seeing now niggles & injuries can happen and it's great we have two quality options. Same at LB tbf.

Let's break it down!

Defensive skills:
Arial ability? Kelly
Tackling? Kelly
Marking? Kelly

Attacking Skills:
Dribbling? Glen
Technique? Glen
Crossing? Glen
Shooting? Glen

General:
Strength? Kelly
Stamina? Glen
Speed? Glen
Positioning? Kelly
Awareness? Kelly

Kelly - Glen 6.5 - 6 (0.5 for youth)

worth noting that when johnson is back, even if he didn't start (and he will ;) ) he definately adds quality to bench and is exactly the type of sub that would inject pace (a big reason why I think he should start) against tired legs.

Why change a winning team and send out the wrong message by dropping someone who has played well? Johnson should be made to bide his time.

I agree with this, but backatcha sheik, does this credo extend to gerrard?

I would say no.

Gerrard - when fit - should go straight back into the team because A) he's the captain, B) he's undeniably the best player we have in that position, and C) he's proven time and time again that he can single-handedly inspire a win.

None of which Magic - great player though he is - can stake a claim to

We shouldn't put so much emphasis on the result, we should be looking at their individual performances.
Adam for instance hasn't exactly set the world alight.
So even if do go on winning, if Adam, or anyone else for that matter, doesn't have enough of an impact on the game, they should be replaced.
In short, Gerrard should play as soon as he's fit.

I think gerrard, owen, fowler persistent injuries are a direct result of being called back into action too soon after returning from an injury.

Kelly stays.

One he's on form and two his defending is better than GJ's imo. Its probably better to have someone stronger at their actual job doing the job.

well that depends what the job of a fullback actually IS. defending is part of it, sure, but creating width is also an essential part of that. look at manu, they have had argubly the best wingers in the world but they still employ fullbacks that get forwards and create chances.

I don't really need to belabour the point as I'm pretty sure johnson will go straight in the side as he has done every single time he has returned from injury and even if he doesn't he makes our bench stronger.

It looked alot more like a flat back four yesterday with Enrique and Kelly supporting when they had to and dropping and tucking in when we were on the defensive. It's about as balanced and tight as we've looked in a longtime.
