A DM

Is it that Rodgers doesn't think we need one. He believes Allen is one? That Lucas is a good enough one?
Every team that's won their league in Europe this season has a really good one.We don't. I dream of the days of having one.

I think we need one, and it seems all successful teams this season have got a dedicated one. Maybe in Rodgers mind he thinks he can do the same function with a Alonso/Pirlo sort of player instead.

He also seemed determined to find a different position for Lucas. It didn't work very well.

Agreed - we sorely need one. A good DM will not only provide extra cover and confidence to the defence but also to the midfield who I feel are often less willing to break forwards into the box for fear of no cover behind them.

Was listening to The Red Room yesterday. Can isn't, and has never been, a DM (straight from the mouth of a journo called 'Barry White' in Germany). Supposedly Liverpool didn't buy him as a DM either, he is box to box and is seen as a possible 'Gerrard Replacement'.

Which is fine for me, as long as the other partners know how to cover the spaces when he goes forward, or have the pace / nous to recover when he's caught out in front. It's why I think a Henderson - Can - Milner trio in midfield (if Milner joins), while not sexy, could actually work well for us in terms of the overall balance it offers. It'll probably get better too as Can improves.

Fans will have to be patient with him - I think we can expect Can to make mistakes, fall asleep, etc. leading to goals which cost us points, but that's part of the process we have to live with when we buy young guys who need to be polished. I enjoy watching players develop their game over time, although it can admittedly be frustrating when the price we pay is watching results not go our way.

At the risk of sounding like a repetitive fucking killjoy...

I fail to see how we are or can appropriately identify players when we don't have even have a fucking formation.

Who are you supposed to pick a player when we have no cunting idea what formation this manager is going to put out on the ground?

He's had 3 full years now of trying and failing to implement a 4-3-3. Is he gonna go back to a 4-4-2 if he gets another 'Suarez' type to play alongside Sturridge again? What do we do now the whole fucking world has unravelled your 3-5-2?

Honestly, we're a shapeless fucking mess, and Brodgson has managed to confound it year upon year. I've no idea how to even describe the way we play or what our approach to games is. Fuck knows how the players who are out there chopping and changing round on a weekly and yearly basis feel.

'Hey lad come and sign for us, we don't know if we need you, and we don't even know where you're gonna play, fancy it though?'

Anyone can become a DM, Lucas was never one. Phil Neville, Gary Barry, and a while host of moderately talented footballers carved out careers as Dms.

And why you think someone whose only qualification is how to write has some sort of insight or value to his comments is beyond me.

As a journalist reporting on Bundesliga football he is likely more qualified that anyone on this forum to comment on Can's DM potential, I'd have thought that much was obvious, not though to you it seems.

Of course certainly he could be mistaken, plenty of players have indeed been 'converted', however lots of posters seem to assume he had been bought either with that in mind (even though BR himself has said he doesn't like to play a dedicated DM), or that it's an 'obvious' transition. I admit I was in that boat too. I'm just pointing out that neither opinion is likely to be true.

Googling Barry White and Bundesliga doesn't bring up anything really. He might be a journalist in the sense that Jay Riley is a journalist.

I was going to say Googling my own name doesn't bring anything up .. but it does ! So maybe you are right 😉
