ASHES - 2015!

The Aussies have a history of doing well at Lord's. It obviously appeals to them to go to the old enemy's own back yard and give his tail a tweak. Now we'll see if England have the same kind of ability to come back fighting.

So Edgbaston, Wood out Finn in apparently due to a minor ankle issue, .the groundsman complaining about the weather devastating his pitch preparation,. Wonder which England will turn up this time.
.

There'll be a lot of pressure on Bell, back at Edgbaston and back in his favourite position at no.3. If he fails again, he'll be lucky to keep his place. Arguably he already has been. All the class in the world is bugger all use if you're not going to make it count.

Bit of a furore over Nevill keeping his place ahead of Haddin down here. Can't say I agree with it, irrespective of Haddin's circumstances, cos Nevill came in for somebody under-performing and did very well himself. He deserves to keep his spot.

Yet again, this Test hinges so much on who wins the toss.

For those who want a bit of nostalgia to get themselves into the mood, here are some cricket commentary files about TMS past and present:

John Arlott's commentary when Bradman got out in his last innings in England - 'And he's bowled' followed by thirty seconds of silence as he lets you hear the crowd applaud Bradman off - must be one of the most masterly bits of sports commentary ever.

(I've tried to find the easiest file sharing site, so this might not work, and if so I'll try another method!)

Thanks GK the download works for me - currently listening to the Blowers one whilst it's raining - very entertaining as you would expect

Incredible start. From 4 down to 11 Aussies lack real threats so finally getting into the top order with the new ball was ideal. Sounds like Finn has been bowling very well. Assuming we get the last man quickly, i'd be interested to see how many first innings have only had 3 bowlers bowling!

I don't think Lyth has the concentration to play international cricket. I get the impression he just isn't used to facing so many balls he needs to leave and just loses his discipline. He is being saved by the sheer lack of openers in our ranks.

The lack of 4 day county cricket at this time of year doesn't help, but Lyth is a good player and we should perservere with him. I think he gets a bit confused by this positive cricket we are supposed to be playing. Hales is the next cab on the rank and must deserve his chance sooner or later.

That was a shocking batting performance from the Aussies, but great bowling from England. Can we repeat it in the second innings

The sad fact is that county cricket hasn't many decent bowlers. So when the batsmen do step up their technique is often found out by the pace and precision. If all that's waiting behind Lyth is Hales then they should persevere with Lyth, because Hales is all over the place, but Lyth needs coaching. It seems he just drifts from one game to the next without any work on correcting his errors.

Zoinks what a day.

I read something on twitter at the start of the days play about the amount of teams that didn't go on to win at Edgbaston after winning the toss and electing to bat.

I wish that preening bellend Clarke had seen it.

Anyway, I went to bed midway through Australia's collapse, and woke up to find out it got even worse. That's the only reassuring thing about a complete fuck-up, it's hard to pinpoint the finger at anyone in particular.

I must profess to not seeing any of the England innings, although I did raise a minor smirk at seeing that public schoolboy prick Cook got rolled again.

Any port in a storm I suppose.

I was there! I'm still speechless! Although that might have something to do with the hangover! Ouch! What a day though.

Ahem

"Australia win the toss and will bat. Woohoo!!"

Bit of 20 20 hindsight going on here

I'm still pissed off with Bell giving his wicket away. He played very well for his 50 but we need to be turning the screw. We fluttered between positive and reckless cricket and if we want to be getting a lead of up to 200 then we need to keep wickets. Hopefully our own middle order are able to get us up towards this mark. Great day of test cricket though - this is why we love it so!

Yup - stupid unnecessary shot under the circumstances although I think he got carried away with the situation. I guess it is a bi product of this aggressive game we have switched on to. A shame because it looked as if he was nailed on for a restorative ton. Cummon England lets try and keep these fuckers in the field all day

Yes - I think if he'd known rain was an over away he would have shut up shop for the evening but hey ho. It was a great 50 and sets us up well but a shame that he wasn't able to use his fine touch to get even more on the board.
