Hugo Boss

DUURRRTY QUIFFER!!!!!!!
Fuck sake. I had started writing about the other video of his I watched today that was good. About the guy United signed, who's name I couldn't remember from Brentford and how he will be perfect for them. Then lost the will.

That was enough time for you to sneak in.

Momo was asking for this the other day as a better stat than xG.

It looks like Understat has this, though you'll have to scroll down to look at the shot diagram, then count and tally the data yourself. Outside the diagram, the data points are summarized simplistically into shots in the 6-yard box, 18-yard box, and outside the 18-yard box. They don't provide the data in tabulated form for shot positions in various zones in the penalty area, hence the additional work I mentioned. Still, some data is better than none, for shits and giggles during the long off-season.

This is the data for Ekitike:

p.s. They do not cite (or at least I haven't seen it) what the data source is.

Personally I only really like the player radars that give an overview of a player. I know their based off individual stats that can be argued about, but combined together it gives a general insight into the player without getting bogged down in the weeds and is easily comparable to other players that I have watched. Beyond that I'll leave it to the data nerds. If you have a very good player at the club nobody gives a hoot about xT xA xXx, you just enjoy watching them knowing their class. It didn't take long for SCM to clock on the Benfica fans had a point about Nunez and it was more than just bitterness that he was leaving. We'll know soon enough what Ekitike is all about, but the fact that he is so comparable to Isak looks promising enough. But 20 league goals in two years, when shite players like Wout Weghorst have comfortably surpassed that only highlight how early in his career he is. I'm keeping expectations mid-tier and hoping that surrounded by better players will allow him to score an acceptable amount of goals as he hones his game. If he explodes into life from the outset, all the better, but that feels an unfair expectation.

Yeah it's got to be comparable to mean anything. That video above shows Ekitike doing all kinds of cool things and initially it's very impressive, but ultimately I'm left asking, "compared to what"?

How often does he do the wrong thing in that situation compared to the right thing highlighted? And how do other players compare? Trying to get real insight from a few clips is basically impossible. You either need stats or to just watch the player a lot. I tend to think that if Ekitike truly is brilliant at, say, making cushioned passes into teammates' paths, then it'd show up in the assists stats...

Unless he was laying up Darwizzy.

I find some of the logic a little silly. He's not 18. If he has stupid shot selection it's just a flaw he has as a player that hasn't been easy to fix.

Or on the other hand, perhaps no other professional club is quite as professional as us. We have data analysts, better ones, more of them, and we are smarter than everyone else. That's why only we could have the incredible insight that perhaps he shouldn't take stupid low percentage shots before. Only Liverpool could coach that out of him, so it's fine. Oh, ok.

I'm looking forward to seeing how all this works because it's fun and new, and what we were doing wasn't that interesting anyway. He's a big risk, they all are, and we will see, I guess that doesn't make for as compelling a video as guessing at whether he'll be great and pretending it's analysis.

It's just a bad time to buy a striker. It's also a good time to sell though, just keep it in mind that there's a reason that Diaz and Rodrigo and nuñez and etikite aren't worlds apart in valuation.

I look forward to Slot and company threatening to cut strips off his silly handbag or stick pins in his ugly Labubu each time he shoots when he should pass.

He is obviously more suited to our system than Nuñez, but Nunez was made worse by being coached to not do what he normally does. That can happen too. It's best when players instinctively fit a system.

If he hasn't listened to his mates telling him he dresses like a menopausal HR director trying to shag the boss I doubt he's going to listen to anyone saying he should be less shit at shooting, especially when those same people have just paid a fortune for his talent. But you never know.
