Might we be in for Carvalho of Sporting? Just called up (and supposedly going to start) for the senior Portugal team play-off vs Sweden.

Manchester United's interest for William Carvalho comes as no surprise to Portuguese national coaches.
While news of United scouting the Sporting Lisbon prospect caused barely a ripple in the British press, David Moyes' informal enquiries only confirms what those inside Portuguese football have been saying since William was the subject of a transfer tug-of-war as a 13 year-old.
Now 21, the Angolan-born William has been involved in Portugal's national teams since he was 15. But it's only this season that he's carving out a place in Sporting's first team.
Last term was spent in Belgium with Cercle Brugge, while the previous season he played in the Portuguese Second Division for Fatima.
But after winning back-to-back Young Player of the Month awards this year, William's emergence is a great triumph for Sporting's youth development.
And the recognition that has come with his breakthrough, where United have been joined by Barcelona and Arsenal in posting scouts to watch the youngster, is no surprise to Fatima manager Ricardo Moura.
"He will be the next No6 for the national team. William is demonstrating his full value and will soon assert himself at international level," said Moura.
"It's not easy to find such a complete player for that position."
Moura goes further, likening William to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira, only "technically more evolved".
"He can also play in an advanced midfield position. He's good with short and long passing on the left and right foot. He's good in the air. He is very complete."
Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho knows they have something special on their hands and he made it a priority to secure William to a new contract before the start of the season. Now tied to Sporting until 2018, the midfielder's buyout clause is set at €45 million.
"There's no doubts about William," said De Carvalho.
"With time, no one doubts that William will earn his place in the Portugal squad.
"We'll help him grow step by step. When he is called into the national team, he'll be there to stay."
Even if De Carvalho does choose to cash in, it will still take something special to convince William to leave - as Benfica discovered almost eight years ago.
Then, as a 13 year-old, William was in his first season with Sporting and not yet formally signed.
Having been alerted to this prodigious midfield talent, Benfica rolled out the red carpet for William and his family. A club delegation visited the Carvalho home, armed with a contract for William to sign.
But with no less than five senior representatives staring back at him, William said "No".
A former junior coach of William's recalled: "We realised that something was wrong: we called him to the side and asked him why he would not sign. This was what every kid wanted, but he was not convinced.
"He was always a Sportinguista and had the dream of playing for Sporting. We had the difficult task of explaining this to Benfica."
But there was still some work to do for Sporting to be sure of William's commitment. And this is where United could have an advantage on any bidding rivals.
Knowing he was a Sportinguista, club officials asked William who his favourite player was.
"Nani," came the reply.
Within days, Sporting's board had organised for the United winger to call William and that was more than enough to secure his commitment.
Eight years on and William is now on the brink of playing with his boyhood idol for his country - and possibly, should things go to plan for Moyes, at club level too.

the owners would have to be idiots not to spend big in january. we'll probably only have suarez for this season and we need to make the most of it.

Of the summer signings, how many of those added value to our squads? We should buy, but buy players that add value to the team.

Mignolet and Sakho certainly have. Moses too.

Could argue that Cissokho has seeing as he has been playing in Enrique's absence.. Although again you would argue that we would have been no worse off with a ressie covering LWB.

Molby wants Bender
[article=http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jan-molby-liverpool-fc-should-6308407]Brendan Rodgers said he will look to strengthen the side in January – and one of those positions could well be in central midfield.

Managers always have different views of players to supporters and pundits so the type of midfielder the Liverpool boss will be looking at is hard to second guess.

Where some would say that Lucas needs to give the side another 20%, Rodgers may be delighted with what the Brazilian is doing for the team.

And so the manager may want to add a midfielder who is a bit more forward thinking.

I would like to see Liverpool add a player who is the younger version of Steven Gerrard.

That style of all-round midfielder.

Yaya Toure does that great job for Manchester City and is a player who defends when he has to but can also control the pace of a game with the ball.

Toure also chips in with goals when he can.

My suggestion would be for Liverpool to go after Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender.

There are a lot of top players in Germany and I look at Bender and believe he is the real deal.

For me, he ticks all the boxes.

But, as I say, you can never second guess managers these days and my views may be seen as a little old school.

You find that many top flight managers look for specialist players.

Liverpool’s midfield came in for some criticism after the Arsenal defeat and rightly so.

There were even rumours circling around Anfield before kick-off last Saturday that Gerrard would be rested.

But thankfully he wasn’t because Stevie was there to take advantage of the time and space on offer.

But there are going to be games this season when Liverpool’s midfield are second best and we have to accept that there are better teams out there. But additions in January can help.[/article]

Can we fuck off these one season wonder strikers please. I'd break the bank for Luke Shaw and then use the summer to get a top notch central midfielder.

I'll admit to knowing fuck all about this Greek chap but every good striker has a breakthrough season. He might go on to prove you right, but equally, he could go on to bigger and better things. I think these are the kind of gambles clubs in our position have to take. It certainly paid off with Sturridge and Coutinho.

Can't anyone else see that Moses is terrible?te="Mystic, post: 1017520, member: 69"]Mignolet and Sakho certainly have. Moses too.[/quote]
Cant

Moses is not terrible at all. This is getting ridiculous.

He has no position on a 3-5-2. He's not a number 10, and he's not a fucking wing-back. It's not his fault we did ok with that formation for a few weeks, the setup just didn't suit his game.

He came into our side at the start of the year, looked a real threat, scored goals and everyone was loving his work. 1 month later under a different system, and all of a sudden he's "terrible".

Catch the fuck on people.

He's got talent, he can score goals, he's direct, a constant threat, and provides a really good option. I'm certain he'll be a really useful asset this season, especially if deployed effectively, and coming on as a sub might really suit him too.

Terrible my arse.

eh one goal . But anyway while i agree that he's not complete gash , I do wonder if he'll be able to force himself into the team if everyone stays fit .

And i'm not sure if he's that suited to being a sub , i mean his attitude has looked wank when he's come on in recent weeks . In fairness he did alright as a 'squad' player for chelsea but he may not be up for it here especially if he expected to play week in week out .

You only need to look at Rafa's Chelsea in the Europa Cup to see what an effective player Moses can be.

Rodgers made a mistake playing him in the number 10 role. He needs to be in a wider position and given freedom to get into the box at any opportunity. He needs a solid LB behind him, i.e not Traore mk II.

I dont think it was a mistake but more a necessity. He clearly felt Alberto wasnt ready and Allen was injured or on his way back.

He'll be a great option for us out wide now that we've returned to 4 at the back.

Moses was poor and clearly unsuited to the CAM position but was picked for it 4 consecutive weeks. It's Alberto's natural position and he should have been given the opportunity to learn and develop in the first team in Coutinho's absence.

Seeing Moses there reminded me of the Rafa days.

The 3 league games he played there we won 2 and drew 1 though.

Diego Costa has a £20m release clause at Atletico Madrid [GETTY]
Costa has hit 13 goals in La Liga this season - five more than Lionel Messi but three less than Cristiano Ronaldo - to help Atletico fill the void of Radamel Falcao.

And while the naturalised Spanish international is happy in Madrid, a number of top sides are keen on luring him away.

According to reports in Germany, Costa has a release clause worth £20m that can be activated at the end of the season.

Although Borussia Dortmund are lining up the 25-year-old as a replacement for supposedly Bayern Munich-bound Robert Lewandowski, big English clubs are also in the running.

Liverpool bid for Costa this summer but he opted to stay at Atletico, while Chelsea and Arsenal are also monitoring the situation.

Jose Mourinho wants a big-name forward at Stamford Bridge and has been impressed by Costa's goalscoring form this season.

Same Arsene Wenger, who is intent on adding more firepower to his Gunners squad to help ease the workload on Olivier Giroud.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City are also being kept abreast of developments, with £20m seen as a cut-price fee for one of Europe's most dangerous finishers.

I'd be surprised if most on here didn't see the benefits and value that Moses brings with him.

What detracts from this is his work rate which has appeared distinctly average. He'll add value to us out wide in the right formation but it doesn't matter where you play - you can still work hard.

This is so. He'll prove a useful asset before the season is out.
