I had a look at Bielsa's wiki page. What surprises me is that he hasn't managed a "big" team, if you don't count Argentina.
Also his list of honours are a bit meh.

I'm sort of pleased they're promoted, because I quite like Bielsa, but, aside from Revie's corruption, I experienced so many violent 'skirmishes' at Elland Road as a kid, including a brick missing my head by about a millimeter, I don't think I'll ever warm to that club. The visiting fans' stand was situated so as to pretty much push you into an ambush when you tried to leave - it was hellish. I stopped going really early on. Maybe it's changed but those fans used to be utter bastards.

Used to like Leeds because they hated United as much as we do. United would usually drop points against them.

There must be a video out there, somewhere, of Shanks and Revie after a game when we more or less clinched the title after a game at Anfield. It's an early memory of mine. They did a joint interview for MOTD, and then Revie said he would take Shanks off for a pint. I never warmed to Revie, but that was a nice moment, and it must seem so alien if you see it today.

True.

Had a good spell at Marseille, not sure what happened at Lazio and then flopped at Lille but none of them are exactly huge european sides.

Rumoured that Messi is pushing for Bielsa at Barcelona.... if even a hint of truth, Leeds fans will be pooping their pants

Never knew about that and it's put Revie up (a bit) in my estimation. Not that that's saying a great deal, because in addition to the mercenary side of the guy I always held him responsible for the sheer viciousness of his team and (less importantly for us but an addition to the charge sheet even so) the waste of talent it represented. Those players could really play (my own view at the time was that they were at least our equals in terms of sheer talent), but Revie turned them into a pack of rabid junkyard dogs. That said, IMO it worked to our benefit in the end, because I'm convinced they'd have won more at our direct expense if he'd simply let them play.

I don't recall having any huge hatred for Leeds, I think because we tended to do alright against them (at least at Anfield. We had some shockers against them at Elland Road).

When we became shit in the early 90s I was rather grateful to them for beating United to the title as well. Liverpool being shit was bad enough but United winning the league was insult to injury so for that season at least, I liked Leeds.

Wasn't Tony Yeboah playing for Leeds when he scored 3 or 4 absolutely belting goals in the one season? One of them against us with David James in goal.

That O'Leary 'Moi babies' era is like it never happened, thank god. A good team but blimey that bloke was incredibly irritating. The ego of him - he even tried to take charge of the media when Ged was in hospital. Strange how such characters disappear after threatening to be around for ages.

I remember O'Really had the brass neck to moan about the reception the Arse got when we clapped them off the pitch at Anfield in 89 after they stole the title. We were otherwise universally lauded for our reaction that night, so I've always suspected someone said something he personally didn't like and offended his vanity.

I wonder if it's actually strange that such snake oil salesmen can vanish quickly though. I expect folks see through them eventually.

They'd sold a generational talent in the form of Cantona to them for a £1.2m, so didn't hate them that much. Stupid fuckwits!

Yes, I think that is probably it. On the face of it, he did a good job at Leeds and had a good team full of exciting young players. He looked the part as well, and came across well on TV etc.

He didn't actually win anything though, and although people talked about the young players who came through (who were presumably there before O'Leary became manager) he spent a lot of money as well, which was the cause of Leeds' downfall in the end of course. Ferdinand, Viduka, Dacourt, Keane, Fowler were all fairly expensive players at the time, So it wasn't really some miracte that he was qualifying for the Champions League.

The two management jobs that he had were at clubs with horrible (and in the case of Ridsdale, incompetent) chairmen too, so it could well have been one of those situations where he was safe enough as long as he could suck up to the chairman and keep them onside. Obviously that only ever lasts for so long.

Yes. Maybe him and Phil Brown meet up once a week with a few cans of ale and watch old videos of themselves when they were famous.

A school friend (Blue, but a good lad) was bricked at Elland Road back in the early 70s. Also remember absolute hordes of 12-14 year olds running crazy down Pinehurst Avenue, kicking cars, trashing plants, etc.

70s and 80s was the height of football hooliganism (at every club there was a sizeable thuggish element), its largely been stamped out, thank goodness.

I live near Leeds so unfortunately have to deal with Leeds fans most days, I work with a load of them, play football with a load of them, its not very pleasant. They're like Newcastle fans, deluded, self entitled, half of them think they'll be scrapping for the champions league spots next season. They're signing Cavani, Milner is definitely going back, they'll have no trouble competing with Spurs and Arsenal for players because they're just as good and have Bielsa.

I have no doubt in my mind that the "Messi wants Bielsa at Barca" story has come from a Leeds fan to show that the worlds best players want to work with him to try and dupe a few idiots into joining them.

Yep they dubbed MoTD gotm the Yeboah of the month that year. The one against Wimbledon was outrageous.
