Jakub Blaszczykowski: Liverpool Close in on £7M Bundesliga Star Winger!

Reports suggest Liverpool will launch a fresh £7m bid for Borussia Dortmund winger Jakub Blaszczykowski in the summer as long as the player proves his fitness following a long injury lay-off.

Though the 23-year-old Polish international is relatively unknown of in this country, he is highly-rated in Europe and would finally add balance and competiiton to the right-side of midfield without sacrificing the team’s work ethic.

Blaszczykowski is an attacking right winger and would finally provide expertise in that position to a Reds side that has been using Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt in that role. The Anfield giants remain contenders for the Premier League and have an extremely strong spine to their team but have been criticised for sometimes lacking the width and guile that Manchester United possess. However, Albert Riera’s summer arrival and the increasing interest in Blaszczykowski suggests that the width and dribbling ability the team has been crying out for will be in place this summer.

The Polish international begun his career with Wisla Krakow in his homeland. He made a total of 51 League appearances over 3 seasons and scored 4 goals before a 3 million Euro move to Germany.

In his first season in the Bundesliga, Blaszczykowski impressed playing the majority of the time on the right wing where his pace and dribbling ability could be used to maximum affect. However, he has also been used as a wing-back on occasions so his versatility would certainly appeal to Benitez.

The 5 ft 9 winger made 24 League appearances (22 starts) in his debut season for Borussia as the club finished a disappointing 13th. However, this season the team have performed well and are currently 7th in the Bundesliga although. Blaszczykowski has only played in 22 league games (18 starts) after being sidelined through injury. His impact on the side cannot be underestimated. After all, since his return to fitness, Borussia have won all 4 of their league matches home and away.

The 23-year-old has made 21 appearances for his country and scored twice. He was unfortunate not to play a part at Euro 2008 as he had to withdraw through to injury despite being named in the squad. In fact, the winger was a key component to Poland’s excellent qualification campaign as was sorely missed in the finals. Blaszczykowski made his debut in March 2006 but was not called up to the final 2006 World Cup squad so has been rather unfortunate at international level not to feature in two major finals.

If he does sign for Liverpool then their fans won’t have to worry about getting his long name on the back of their replica shirts as he usually prefers ‘Kuba’ as a shortened version of his Christian name. If Benitez can bring in this quick, talented winger then Liverpool will be even stronger in terms of balance and personnel for next season’s campaign.

That story has been doing the rounds for a long time. Nothing new really, just confirming what we'v known for some time.

He's a good winger, but we need better.

£7 mill. No thanks. No more Benny/Albert type players. You generally get what you pay for, and i'd rather spend big on a few genuine quality players.

I hope this isn't true.

Never seen him play, so cant comment.....wont stop a lot of others in the same position as myself making snap judgements, never quite understand that

According to Wiki:

Years Club App (Gls)*
2003–2004 / KS Cz?stochowa /?? (11)
2005–2007 Wis?a Kraków /51 (3)
2007– Borussia Dortmund/41 (2)

5 goals since 2005.

Should've kept Jermaine.

Well, the last player we signed from Dortmund after a long spell on the sidelines turned out to be fantastic, so there should be no concerns really.

hahaha

We should be talking about signing an exciting RW currently playing in Germany but it aint this one.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was true. A typical Rafa signing. Young but experienced, aged 22-24, good quality, works hard for the team, will improve.

5 assists in 17 starts this season.

And yeah, I'm going to sulk until we sign Silva.
What does that tell us ?
He's injured a lot?

I don't know I'm asking you.

Why did you pick that stat out and say you'd sulk unless we got Silva ? Does that stat mean he's not good enough ?

He's played an average of 23 games a season for the past four seasons. He sounds quite injury prone.

Well, it's hardly encouraging, is it?

Then again, Silva's stats aren't much to crow about either.

I think the person with the most assists (which as you know I don't think much of as a stat) in the Premiership has 10. That's in 30+ games.

Gerrard has 8 assists this season in the league.

It's an easy go-to stat. In some cases, it tells you a lot about the player and his form, in other cases not so much and you have to dig deeper.

Maybe he's provided squillions of assists.

thats not too bad.. he would get less here.. He has Kuyt in competition for his favoured position lol

Anyway looking at his stats.. Kuyt is a better option anyway...

kuyt assists and Goals this season is respectable... Granted he is striker by trade.... But it is quite decent in terms of being a makeshift winger..

as a squad filler maybe but what does he offer more than yossi? still seems like rafa's scared of gambling on the star players - 7 million is pennant level unless we've discovered the next ronaldo or something.

Brendan will be thinking of nicknames as we speak. Kuba-stard?
Well seeing as every Liverpool fan'll call him Blassy, I'd guess Plassy-winger.

I would think it's a good signing only if we have another 2 match winners lined up before him. Same goes for Santa Cruz.
