Manquillo

A thread complimenting one of our better players this season, for a change. What looked like a strange loan arrangement in the off-season has so far proved to be an inspired idea. With Flanagan out till December and Johnson having missed several games already, Manquillo has not only stepped in to fill the void, but also done it pretty impressively.

Although he won't get credited with the assists, he's already contributed to at least two crucial game-winning goals so far, earning the face-saving penalty deep into injury time against Ludogorets in the CL, and it was his surging run which created the space for Sterling to set up Henderson for the winning goal against West Brom (though with a bit of luck, I might add, as the Spaniard's pass was deflected to Sterling).

I think Montero got around him once after beating him for pace today, but otherwise, they battled to a standstill, and I'd say he even seemed to frustrate Montero. On the other end, he pressed very high up and made some good cuts inside. He's also often showing up for the ball and not afraid to receive it and attack with it. His crossing from wide still needs better accuracy, but otherwise, he's looking pretty polished.

For our equalizer, he played his part again with a nice curling run on the outside of Borini. The Swansea fullback had to sink back to defend the run in case Borini chose to slide in a pass, and so couldn't get aggressive on Borini. This gave Borini a 1-v-1 matchup against Shelvey, whose slack work then allowed Borini the space and time to put in the excellent cross for Balotelli to finish. Clip of the goal here:

Good spirit by the lad too. Late in the game against Hull, he made an attacking run and his ankle got bitten, earning us a free kick. He seemed to be in a bit of pain after that, but instead of lying on the ground waiting for the physio to come provide pain relief (see: Borini), he simply got up, limped around, and then winced and waved to signal to the referee that he was all right and there was no need for the physio to come on. He then trotted back to take up position in case Hull counter-attacked off our free kick. Had he required treatment, he'd have had to come off the pitch while the kick was being taken, which would have left us a man light in attack for the setpiece or in defence against a counter.

The loan arrangement is confusing to me, but if he keeps putting in performances like he's done so far, we really should talk to Atletico about making his move permanent before they decide they want to keep him.

He's been a revelation considering his age, lack of game time last season and his overall inexperience, brilliant scouting work. I said I thought he looked ace in the clips before he arrived but he has transcended them. I can understand, with all the questions surrounding his inexperience, why we went for a loan move but just hope we can tie him down to a full transfer quickly because he is only going to get better and better and could be our RB for the next 10 years.

He did some amazing defending yesterday. A right-back, playing for Liverpool did some amazing defending

Read that and savour

If Johnson starts against Newcastle, it's a fucking travesty. The kid really deserves his place.

I also like what I've seen from Manquillo so far. I think Rodgers is playing him the he is (i.e. resting him from time to time) because he wants to protect him and not "burn" him. He does the same with Moreno and he also did it with Sterling last season.

I was expecting another Cissokho. There was nothing to be read about him that gave me any room for hope or expectation that he may not be shit, but he isn't at all. He's class act and deserves to be keeping Johnson on the bench. It will be gutting to lose him.

Johnson is Rodger's #1 RB and I don't agree with it.

I'm not sure that's the case - I don't think we can really know yet at this point as it's only recently that we've had all three of Moreno, Manquillo and Johnson available again. When the season started, this would have been true, but since then, Manquillo has done a fine job and I'm sure Rodgers would've been impressed by his performances. Johnson started at RB against Real Madrid but that could just be Rodgers opting for experience for that game - he was a sub against West Brom, and then an unused sub against QPR, so I think it's hard to say for now who Rodgers fancies as his no. 1.

Probably need a few more games to see where Rodgers leans.

I would play Manquillo in Madrid. Which means Johnson probably startling vs Newcastle.

I think the three defensive acquisitions we made in the summer will all come good. Manquillo looks the most secure so far but Moreno and Lovren will be fine. Not bad for a manager who can't pick a defender. Come to that, the job he did with Flanagan last season wasn't too had for a guy who can't coach one either.

That's true, but I think more doubts remain about Rodgers ability to coach a defensive set-up, be it from open or set plays, rather than to coach individual defenders. Other than making us competitive in the CL, that is the last big point he has to prove at this club.

I'm intrigued to see where Flanno will fit into the fullback plans when he's up to speed again - he was a wonderful surprise last year and should be striving for a 1st team place again.

He's also pretty big for a full back, isn't overly reliant on pace and reads the game exceptionally well. I really like him, he looks the real deal.

He'll do well to make the bench.

First choice backup for either Manquillo or Moreno. He's more reliable than Johnson and Enrique.

Manquillo better stay fucking fit for the rest of this season, because I don't think I can watch another full season of Glen Johnson without getting a stroke, or two.

Why is he not playing? Everyone knows Johnson is no threat and that he has an aversion to fast running. Play the young one for goodness sake.

I think he's the most talented footballer we have in that position, but his actual performances haven't lived up to his talent for some time now.

Still the best Rb we have. Granted he had a poor game against Newcastle, but I think he's being scapegoated.

Looking at right backs we've had the last 10 years I'd put Finnan first, Arbeloa second, Johnson third.

Heh, doesn't that pretty much make him our worst RB in the last 10 years?

Shit squaddies that got booted out after playing a few games notwithstanding of course.

That's a bit harsh. True but harsh.
He's evidently in good company.
