Some things that are legend in football give me a massive meh.

I was thinking about it just now having just watched Ruud Gullit say that if Marco Van Basten hit that shot another 100 times he would never score it again.

Its really not that good a goal or that difficult a finish.

Sorry. What are your meh moments.
Everyone loves it you are all like 'meh!'

Bergkamp's goal against Argentina in 98. I get that it's a brilliant goal, but it's basically just one sublime touch, and that doesn't really seem worth ALL that much hype to me. Everyone at the time said it was 3 incredible touches but I think that's bollocks: the initial control opens the space for the easy cut in, and then that opens the goal for the finish.

I mean, it's a great goal. It's just nowhere near as good as most people say.

Maradona..

The hand of god 86..

No way should have Maradona manage to out jump a towering Peter Shilton.. He was a Goalkeeper that could also use his hands ffs..

So for allowing that to happen, the goal is well deserved IMHO... Despite the fact it was handball.

So non of the 'he robbed us'.. I mean the modern day comparison is Shaun Wright-Phillips trying to out jump Peter Crouch..

So Shilton was 'meh' for being out jumped..

I never saw the big deal with Cantona. I realise that as a LFC fan I'm clearly biased but aside from a few good goals I seem to remember loads of games just passing him by. The same I can say about Roooooooooooooney. He just seems so overrated. A hatrick in the CL on his Utd debut and a neat little volley against citeh and suddenly it's a media fap off because he's English.

It might just be because I despise every single thing about Utd but well - There you go. Cantona and Rooney = Meh!

You on crack?

I can't imagine feeling 'meh' about Cantona - I was equal parts awed and immiserated by him as a kid.

I'm with Oncy - I never thought it was that amazing.

He's running away from goal, at a tight angle and has to volley a high, looping ball. It's amazing he made contact with it at all, never mind putting it into the top corner at the far side. Fantastic goal.

I can understand thinking it was overrated or whatever (well I can't, but different strokes and all that) but to call it not a good goal and not difficult? Y'all on crack.

I feel the same way about some of Ibra's goals - like the Van Basten esque one he scored for Sweden. Meh. Just doesn't do it for me.

I know he had numerous 'moments' and I'm not denying the guy was a talent but the near mythic status he gets is unjustified imo. For every good game he had - he had three that we were frankly 'meh'.

I'm too young to remember Cantona properly really, but I sort of agree with you regards Rooney.

The problem with Rooney for me is that he didn't really live up to his potential. He's had a great career, no doubt, but when he broke through at Everton I'd never seen anything like it. He had everything and could do it all. Now I haven't seen him beat a man for about 4 years. He was a phenomenon when he was a teenager/early twenties.

It was a good goal no doubt. It's been fawned over so many times I can understand why you think narcotics is involved in my opinion. There has been many goals scored like it though but maybe don't get the prestige. My memory is hazy (narcotics probably) but wasn't Van Basten a Dutch bench warmer back in '88? He came on scored that goal and a few others and earned legendary status.

Yeah there have been others scored like it, you're right. It's still one of the hardest things to do in football, though.

Your other point, I'm not so sure about. I'm too young really (I was born in 87) but I always considered Van Basten to be one of the greats of the time. I may be wrong, however.

I agree it's a wonderful goal and a singular skill. He really is just swinging his boot at it though at the end of the day. Timed it beautifully and booooom in the back of the net. Good goal but mythic?? I'm not sure.

Born in 87 really? Your posts are wiser than your years suggest - You young cunt! 😉

Well obviously you have to consider the stage in which he scored it. International tournament goals always get more love for one reason or another. There have been better goals scored like it, sure, but Oncy suggesting it wasn't difficult is what got me.

Haha thanks. Although I'm not feeling too young at the moment. But maybe I should post on here more often and remind folk of my age in order to get that ego boost!

I'm just jealous as I'm hitting 40 in May! *sobs*

Yeah I remember the goal clearly. I also remember the hoopla that came after it. You are right of course that on a international stage the spotlight is shining more prominently on it.

I remember Maradona's second against England in '86 as well. That really was special. A year before you were born....... You cunt!

A lot of games did pass him by but he had the frustrating ability to pop up in the 93rd fucking minute with a last gasp winner whether he was playing well or garbage, and that's what made him so important for United. Not too mention a certain FA cup winning goal against their arch rivals (in a terrible match which passed almost everyone by)....

the magic of the FA cup

Cristiano Ronaldos free kick against Portsmouth and his freekicks in general

The white suits........ *shudders*

Horrible, horrible game

Horrible Horrible Day! I hitchhiked back from Buckinghamshire to N Wales that day after watching the game. The journey I had was 'interesting' to say the least. I think I posted the story up on here a couple of years ago. The long and short of it was though I very nearly got man raped by a crazy lorry driver! I got rescued by a Bolton cabbie. No bums were injured thankfully! 🙂

I remember reading that. Didn't realise (or remember) that it was the same day.

Rooney's overhead kick is a recent one.

I must admit I've also had loads of meh moments watching tiki taka Barca during Guardiola's time.
