Maradona..

The hand of god 86..

So for allowing that to happen, the goal is well deserved IMHO... Despite the fact it was handball.
That is such bollocks. You are saying cheating is allowed, venerated even, if you don't get caught.

Fucking Giggs semi-final of the cup goal against Arsenal.

That was the first thing that came into my head when I saw the first post of this thread. Ran 40 yards, no one tackled him, got a lucky bobble through a couple of shit tackles, and then just whacked it.

Does my fucking tits in that goal.

Nah - He was annoyingly brilliant. His quest for a knighthood is getting tedious though.
He wasn't really, though. Remember his goal against Greece that people talk about? That was his 12th attempt. No one seems to remember that.

Actually the game against Greece is one of the reasons I like him. He was phenomenal in that game. Sure he missed a few but by god he put a shift in. A proper captain's performance - capped with a goal that took England to the world cup.

A captain's performance you say? Charging about the pitch, constantly neglecting his positioning, utterly lacking in discipline or intelligence. His free kick expertly masked the fact that he, and the England team that day were gash.

Yep. He was pretty much the reason England weren't winning, running fucking everywhere over the pitch instead of actually playing where he should be, & the fact he needed 11 sighters before he hit the target was mental.

I'll agree that his crossing ability, & the super accurate crossing from deep that he practically pioneered was outstanding. He had that ability that few players had to make himself a yard of space without using simple pace & only needed a fraction of a second to get the ball in the danger area.

Yea he was running around like a headless chicken against Greece, it was like someone transplanted a springer spaniels brain into his skull

He was a good player but very much overrated for all the obvious reasons and was indulged far too much.

It was a good goal no doubt. It's been fawned over so many times I can understand why you think narcotics is involved in my opinion. There has been many goals scored like it though but maybe don't get the prestige. My memory is hazy (narcotics probably) but wasn't Van Basten a Dutch bench warmer back in '88? He came on scored that goal and a few others and earned legendary status.

Van Basten was no bench warmer, Red. He was their first choice centre-forward and an amazing player on his day, one of the most complete all-round strikers I've ever seen.

I was originally "meh" about the King. When we signed him to replace Keegan I thought we'd been done. How wrong can you be? 😀

How can a headless chicken have a skull anyway? 😉

with a dogs brain in it!

What was the situation with that match, was he just given the armband or allowed to play in the center? something changed that convinced him he had to play like that.

I've always thought Beckham was a one trick pony with a good work ethic and could run all day.

It's just his one trick was very, very fucking good.

He'd had the armband for a while and started in his usual position on the right of midfield, but the Greeks took the lead and were frustrating the bejabers out of England (plus we had to make sure we at least avoided defeat in order to avoid a play-off to qualify). Others above obv.have a different view but I don't recall Beckham being part of England's general uselessness that day. On the contrary, it looked to me as though he decided he'd have to move infield and get a grip on the game because nobody already playing there was managing to do so.

I'm too young to remember Cantona properly really, but I sort of agree with you regards Rooney.

The problem with Rooney for me is that he didn't really live up to his potential. He's had a great career, no doubt, but when he broke through at Everton I'd never seen anything like it. He had everything and could do it all. Now I haven't seen him beat a man for about 4 years. He was a phenomenon when he was a teenager/early twenties.

Or maybe he did live up to his potential when he had two seasons where he banged in 26 &27 league goals between ages 24-26.

Unless you thought by the time he hit his footballing prime (around now according to pundits, do I need to tell you they're always wrong? ) he was going to be hitting 40 league goals a year?

Goals scored in Finals of major tournaments are always elevated to another level. You can add the Zidane volley in the UCL final to the list . I'm sure he scored much better goals in less high profile games.

As far as Van Basten goes, until someone duplicates a similar feat in a final, it's 27yrs now, then it will always be lauded.
Plus, you can't beat a good volley!

That zlatan goal against England a year or so ago.

Rooneys game has just changed so much over the past decade it's impossible to really judge one way or another.

The 17 year Old Rooney would beat 2 men and rifle it from 20 yards. He lost that explosive side very young, in my opinion but grew into a much more complete all rounder.

That sounds about right, I thought I recalled his circumstances changing in that match which is why he was running around like he'd just smoked crack but I guess it he was driven by the occasion and his teams shitness. I'm just remembering how super fit he was - Dirk Kuyt levels.

Yeah I'm not knocking him as a player at all. He was a fantastic striker no doubt. And that goal while being very good I've seen scored by many others without the fanfare. He always had a knack of scoring stunning goals in finals though. He wasn't a bench warmer. I didn't mean that. In fact in 1988 he was the ballon d'or winner. He was just injured at the beginning of the tournament and missed the first couple of qualifiers. He still ended up as the tournaments top scorer though.

They were gash that day but I was impressed with Beckham. I guess we see it differently. I wonder what the common non LFC consensus was to his performance that day?

Nah. That Zidane volly deserves the praise it gets, it would still be all over youtube if he'd have done it against leicester in a pre season friendly.

Anyways, about 10 years ago some Spurs player hit one from about 40 yards, top corner, kop end. Everyone in world football went on about it like it was the best goal ever. I was stood right behind it and couldn't believe Dudek didn't even move to get it. He could have wandered over and put his hat on it. Totally shite keeping. Meh.
