STILL unconvinced dave. On his day, unplayable, but those days are few and far between

You'd think after that long response I'd dignify it with a counter argument but can I fuck be arsed.

Night.

Rooney is brilliant one day anonymous the next.
And in international and in most European games hes fucking garbage.
Hes a tiny tiny bit of a flat track bully.
He certainly doesnt seem to be developing into this world beating beastie we were promised.
He isnt a kid anymore and work rate alone doesnt make you worldy.

He's excellent. Although he 's been at a similar level for several years now without kicking on (besides inventing the overhead kick).

Rooney blows hot and cold. When he's good, he's really, really good but when he's shit, he's really, really shit.

Obviously he's on his game more often than not - no doubt the cunt's world class on his day but he still puts in his fair share of shockers during a season.

Might not be his fault - I think its genetics - seriously requires a different type of discussion. But to quote Muhammad Ali's famous trainer the late Angelo Dundee on Mike Tyson when he won his first heavy weight title at the age of 20 was quoted as saying something like :- " He is the oldest 20 year old to win the title ". Looking at Rooney when he was 17 and looking at his build now - I can honestly say he is probably aging faster than his actual age in terms of physical development. If you notice - he is not doing things with the ease at which he has been over previous years. Hence the inconsistencies you notice.

Barring injury, when he stops playing he will be more or less Utd's all time scorer, will have a massive bag full of medals, will probably be behind only Shearer in terms of Prem goals, will have 100 England caps and probably 40-odd goals behind only Lineker and Charlton.

Not bad for hot and cold.

So it's dependent if you're surrounded by world class players you mean?
no i mean if he is surrounded by world class players and has consistently scored, is considered the best player and after ronaldo's departure stepped up, it all suggests that he is in fact world class? no?

That I have no doubt. Starting at 17 as a relative consistent starter helped him of course.

As Ive said, an excellent player, not world class

Surprisingly a lot of United fans have also come to this realisation. Many season ticket holder at OT tell me than they can tell in the first 2 or 3 minutes of games whether or not Rooney is "on his game". Apparently he's far more of a confidence player than I originally thought and when he goes a couple of games without scoring he "disappears" from subsequent games.

He is a very good player but not what he was hyped up to be when he was 17.

As for world class, it's hard to say. That Utd team can obscure the real quality of an individual because they're such a good outfit.

It's a little unfair to judge him on the back of his England performances but successive England managers have been willing to build their team around him and he's almost always disappointed. Gerrard at least looks good when he's given a platform to perform. It's tough to reconcile all those abysmal showings with the fact that he's a world class player.

It's true that he isn't the first to struggle to replicate club form for country but have any looked quite so abject?

I always think the idea of Wayne Rooney is better than Wayne Rooney. On his day, yes his can be unplayable. But those days are too infrequent. Look at Messi. Every game he scores, sometimes more than one, or assists with genius. Influences a game from all over the pitch. That is what Rooney should be aiming for.

I remain convinced that Messi would score nothing like the current rate if he played in the epl. Nor would he dominate the games. He'd be crowded out, given absolutely no rest and struggle with little knocks through the season. He'd still have the odd game where he looked imperious and everyone on here and elsewhere would crow about his being without peer and nigh on unstoppable.

No way does Ibra get anywhere near Rooney - that comparison is crazy. But he's not kicked on the way he should have and I reckon its down to diet. He's never been truly fit - got by on youthful energy and recovery but he's begining to suffer for it now IMO. He doesn't have the same agility with the ball nor the same acceleration without it.

He's an absolute world class talent but just not in a the kind of physical condition to take advantage of it. A bit like the kid at school who was always so brilliant he never needed to train to be the best on the pitch at lunchtime. Then he came up against all the other kids who were the best at their school and realized he should have been training hard for the last 5 years if he wanted to compete with them.

I don't see where the comparison was made but if you give me Zlatan or Rooney to build a team around, I'd take Zlatan every time. He's a phenomenal player, who's finally started to perform in big games over the last 3-4 years. He scores 20+ goals every year, assists on plenty, can drop back and is a winner no matter where he goes.

I said Ibra was better, and he is.

10 years of bring a Don at some of the biggest clubs in world football

Rooney has done it United.

Is exactly my thoughts

I agree ... he's as dominant as they come at the club game - and to do it at Ajax, Barca, Milan, Juve, Inter and soon PSG is a phenomenal track record.

Exactly

He may be shite on occasion but he's still one of the best strikers in the world for if not THE best

Oh, Kagawa looked very good too I thought.

Two good feet, sliderule passing, can play in tight spots. He's the perfect number 10. They've got a player there.

Yup

Can't explain how devastated I am that they got him, for so little too
