Torres scored 24 league goals that season and we still finished 4th. Interesting Xabi only made 16 league starts.

Xabi picked up two long-term injuries that season, and it's really what caused his apparent dip in form, and the pursuit of Barry the summer after. Had Xabi been available throughout, we'd have done better than 4th, I'm sure. Essentially, it was largely the same squad we had for 2008-09 (with the following major swaps - Dossena for Riise, Riera for Kewell, and Keane for Crouch).

If you look at it carefully, what it really needed was another world class attacking player. Which is what we should have exchanged Crouch for. Except we got Keane.

Rafa kept banging on about how he was in for Jovetic. I wonder what would have transpired if we had indeed signed Jovetic instead of Keane. All we needed in the 2008-09 season was another player in attack with a little bit of magic. Add Suarez to that team, and we'd have walked the title.

Didn't Rafa say something about not having the funds to buy Jovetic? Or was that after we sold Keane? Regardless, you're right, that transfer window was where we fucked up massively. The idea of replacing Alonso with Barry and buying Keane for 20 million to replace Crouch, makes me want to cry till this day.
