Our greatest ever CB

I'd take Hyypia over VVD in a Gerrard Houllier side, although I agree VVD is more well rounded and overall the better player.

It’s a generational argument. Hansen was by far the best CB I saw in a Red shirt. You can say VVD is very Hansenesque but the lad from Partick was amazingly. The way he could bring the ball out of defence into attack bypassing midfield enabled the team to attack as one was something to see.
Not knocking VVD, in this generation he’s the best

Agree with the first sentence but not with the second. Jocky was nowhere near as good as Virgil in the air and that's a vital part of the CB's job.
I think it’s fair to say Hansen was shit in the air but he played accordingly. He never got tight against a centre forward from goal kicks, he played more as a sweeper. For a guy who couldn’t head a ball (and Lawro wasn’t much better) we rarely had problems aerially.

I remember Niall Quinn scoring a hattrick against Hansen/Lawro and he dominated them in the air but can’t remember any other occasions.

There weren't many, that's true, not least because Hansen and Lawrenson's reading of the game was so polished that they snuffed dangerous situations out early. We'll still have to differ though on who was/is the better player. I mentioned heading but actually I can't think of a single skill area in which Virgil isn't at least as good as Jocky was. I rated Jocky extremely highly BTW and he'd defo get the other CB spot in my idea of the All-Time XI with Sami on the bench, but Virgil is quite simply and quite definitely the best CB I've ever seen play for us.

When he hasn’t got Calamity Konate at RCB and Kerkez settles, he’ll probably be fine for 18 more months at least.

I’m worried some of our play the past 2 months has aged him like a “teenage wonderkid from Nigeria”

It's a tough one trying to compare players of different eras like that.. Was a completely different game back in Hansen's era.. Backpasses, offside rule and physicality so much different..you could break a player's leg and not get sent off...

Actually JJ, on second thoughts you are right. I was thinking about it whilst watching the game last night and the deciding factor for me (in switching from Hansen to VVD) is that VVD would have dominated in the 70’s & 80’s but I don’t think Hansen would dominate quite as well nowadays.

With the ever-changing offside rule centre backs need to be very physical, get their challenges/headers in early which would not have suited Hansen’s style.

It’s true, Hansen admitted to not like heading the ball which is why he concentrated on controlling the ball and playing it out of defence.
As an old fart I can remember VVD having a few mare’s but never Hansen which he obviously did, occasionally, very rarely 😁

I think Rooney might have just stung VVD into playing harder and after the game VVD coming out and saying what he did kind of emphasizes it to me. We had a big dip in form. Other people saying due to Jotta and the 20 minute chat, heads went down, six months of mourning. Salah not looking forward to coming back to Anfield and all that. I was a big Jotta fan was thrilled we brought him in. Horrid loss. But if I was Jotta and seeing the team playing over the past few weeks he'd be really annoyed and just the same as the rest of us having a go at the team and Slot. If I was VVD I'd say - Jotta would want us winning and lets win it again for him. So thanks Wayne Rooney for getting VVD out of his mini slump!

Rooney is hardly one of the great thinkers of the game. Whatever he said about Van Dijk probably flew out of his mind about 4 seconds after he said it.

Funny to see him reminded though.
