I'm going with Stevie G on this:
  • Hendo should have taken it, seems like that was what they had arranged.
  • Says Sturridge did the right thing trying to make sure Hendo took it
Fair enough Mario is probably the best pen taker on the field but he's acting like a nob and being disruptive.

Well that's true but at least we know what should have happened.

No big deal, it was scored, but I find it quite disrespectful from Mario

I'm on the way home so I haven't heard what Gerrard said. Can't wait.

The bullet points in the first post are pretty close to what he said

I'd agree that Mario should take it, makes complete sense he's the best pen taker but it's not his decision to take. There's a chain of command and things are decided upon, he broke that and it starts to rub people up the wrong way and look embarrassing on the field.

It looked bad. My feeling is the best pen taker took it and it was a great pen. Stevie sticking his oar in post match is not going to help in anyway though. You could see how pissed off Studge and Hendo were. Can tried to get Studge to celebrate with them but he stalked off. Not good.

Like I said earlier, Mario was wrong to ignore Hendo & take the ball, but Ballotelli has the best penalty record of the players available so you can understand. Hopefully the fact he scored will mean it'll be easy enough to mend the bridges & make sure it doesn't happen again.

I can't believe Rodgers didn't make it clear that ballotelli is first choice when he's on the pitch & Stevie isn't.

For me it'd be Stevie, Mario, Lambert, Sturridge, Can (just cos he's German, no idea if he can take pens!).

They should have sorted it pre-match that if Balotelli was on the pitch he takes it.

Henderson or Balotelli? It's a fucking no-brainer.

For all the talk of Balotelli and his 'antics' we've heard very little of any of that. The main issue is that he's been disappointing on the pitch (though in part due to the set up of the team).

Now he's looking leaner, keener and actually pretty useful. The last few cameos have been, dare I say it, a bit of a breath of fresh air. A genuine Plan B or a fuck up waiting to happen?

I think it shows that Mario isn't particularly popular.

Irrespective of whether he should have said anything, Gerrard had no interest in defending him and it was clear where his loyalties lay.

The right man took the pen and scored. That's the main thing, but yeh, brodge should have sorted this before the game.

Balo should have taken it, full stop. If Rodgers had appointed Hendo for this match then that should have come with the caveat ... unless Balo is on the pitch.

Yeah, he was great when he came on. Was looking forward to seeing more of him with Sturridge although not sure how that's gonna pan out now

Well yeah, no one expects Mario to stay here long term whereas Hendo is captain in waiting, but I'd prefer if Stevie didn't berate any teammate quite so much on the television, truth or no.

Likelihood is that he's not going to be at Liverpool next season, maybe the manager doesn't want anyone relying on him being the penalty taker. Maybe we should be grooming someone certain to be at the club and likely to be on the pitch as Gerrards penalty replacement.

I'd rather we just scored the pens we get this season and worry about next seasons pens next season.

Leadership material from the Caiser. Do you have a vine of that clip with Can and Studge?

The real fuck-up is Rodgers not making clear that Balotelli is next in line for the pens - cos that must be true, right? He can't seriously have intended Henderson to have taken it ahead of one of the best in the world?

He's a fucking idiot if he did. I don't think I've even seen him take one.

Stevie should have said fuck all.
Absolutely agree.

Very unprofessional from Stevie..

Like I said in the other thread.. If he had a gripe he should have dealt with it behind closed doors..

Balo deserved a pat on the back.. he won us the game.. Instead he got a kicking from his own Captain..

If Henderson was to take it and he decides that it's ok(-ish) that Balotelli takes it instead- Sturridge (and Gerrard) should shut up.

Henderson's a man isn't he (...ooops).

I don't want to get on Henderson's back really but tonight I noticed the trend of him having to take every fucking set piece. Just like Stevie does. Except he's nowhere near as good as Steven.

Just done my fucking head I'm tonight that. We must have someone that can take a decent corner. Why does it have to be the captain?

They did sort it. Gerrard said so.

Mario just decided to ignore the decision

This is also true

The Gerrard thing shows the danger of allowing a current player comment your team's performance on TV. Hendo came out and explained it and that would have been that, but now we'll have the whole saga over the word "disrespectful." And Balotelli will probably be ostracized and alienated just when he is hitting good form. I maintain he did the right thing too.

Its not a big deal, things like this happen all over football, its good to have a competitve nature from players which will inevitably lead to the odd disagreement. Hendo the peacemaker, Mario the ego and Sturridge the occasionally selfish sulk. What's new? I'm more pissed at Gerrard being a tactless oaf about it
