Rio

Dreambeliever

Will he believe again?

Worth his own thread after the pre season he’s had.

Looking like we don’t need another option at LW now.

Super impressive running power and control for 16 with the ability to find the net.

He really does look scary good even if it is only pre season.

Can he play on the right too as a back up for Salah?

Will this be his break out season or will he get minimal minutes and chances?

He made his mark straight away and caught the eye for the u18s, fastracked up to u21 level and, as crazy as it sounds, seems to have outgrown that level too......the lad just takes the piss.

If everyone stays fit, I'd like to think he'd get around 10 games but I can't see Arne starting him in any PL/CL games unless we're nursing a few knocks/suspensions. Maybe we keep him until Jan, see how things go and then if needs be get him out on loan to a championship side for the 2nd half of the season.

If he does get plenty of minutes it’ll have the knock on effect of any young player wanting a chance at a big club seeing us as a more viable option than Chelsea.

He looks very very promising.
I'm trying to remember if Raheem was like this at 16 - and I think it's a pretty fair comp no?
or closer to Sterling?
Regardless, he should easily get ~20 appearances this year (all league/fa cup games, plus sub appearances in games where we either need to break down a stubborn backline or are up by 2-3 goals)

Yep, fair comp to Sterling; same playing style, although Sterling was still playing for the U21s at 16. Sterling was really pacy and favoured cutting into the box or along the 18-yard box edge from out wide and unleashing a shot. I think Sterling was maybe faster and definitely of lighter build; that's what surprises me about Ngumoha most, that he seems to have bulked up a bit this pre-season.

Ngumoha is showing great progress and he seems to get better with each pre-season game. Although I have to say that after he got his goal and assist yesterday, he was kept rather quiet as the opponents got to grips with his game and worked harder (sometimes with double cover) to shut him down. They succeeded in that, so that is a good lesson for Ngumoha.

We should expect him to bulk up but also get faster with that added muscle,

I’m all for getting Rio some minutes in the cup comps, but we also need to be careful about pushing him too far too fast, don’t we?
Rio has been impressive, but we need to put the brakes on. It's still pre season and yesterday he played against Bilbao's reserve side.

I think he's good enough to back up Gakpo. Also Salah will be away in Dec/Jan so there will be a spot on on the bench for him.
For now, I think Carling cup and FA cup games is his level.

Lets be honest, he is good enough to start, we are just being stupid wanting someone else, waste of money. That said, I would advise not getting too attached to this kid, if he becomes what we all hope then his future will go the way of CR7, eventually he will want to goto RM, in fact he smells of a run-away already.

Rio should under no circumstance be taken to the WC at that age. Protect him and let us handle his development.

He's definitely got that bit of talent that most don't, but I can see myself pulling my hair out watching him make the wrong decisions with the final ball or waiting too long before losing that window of opportunity to be able to make the final ball. Yes, I get that he's only 16.
I hope he's developed slowly and properly by the coaching team. League Cup would definitely be good for him, but more so training with the first team and getting bollocked and improving would be his priority I think.

I was thinking about this yesterday and how similar it feels when Sterling made his debut.
Feels though like Rio has more extreme qualities in terms of dribbling and 1 vs 1.
Sterling maybe a bit more well rounded technically and in terms of game intelligence/decision making.

Rio is an absolute gem though, and thankfully we are in a position were we can develop him in the best possible way.

The first paragraph....sounds like what Diaz had been doing for the last 3 seasons anyway.

It's extremely encouraging. There's big tests to come against top level fullbacks who are more switched on once competitive football starts, though. As it stands he has comfortably proven himself ready to be given all the cup games and for resting Gakpo towards the end of games. It's unknown at this time whether or not we can rotate him interchangeably with Gakpo and it might take a number of years to get there, but anything looks possibly for this kid. His defying expectations and he may well be seriously challenging for a spot this year.

We do need to manage his minutes. Sterling is the valid comparison in many ways, but also worth noting how Raheem looked completely washed by 29 and it's only getting worse. Plenty of others, too. Hopefully there's been some advancement in the game about protecting quick, young players.

It's the reason I felt that apart from his workrate, Diaz would be easily replaceable from an offensive point of view. His impressions of Curtis Jones was something I was never a fan of.

Agreed. Sterling played a big part for our team from the age of 17/18. No need for Rio to exposed to first team football like that. If you're good enough you're old enough, fine. But we have to protect the players while they still grow and develop. Playing him in tandem with Gakpo could be great for both his minutes and the rest of his career.
