Rodgers claims no quick-fix for Reds

By ESPN staff

Brendan Rodgers has warned Liverpool fans not to expect overnight success under his stewardship.
Rodgers was brought in from Swansea to replace Kenny Dalglish and he has vowed to play "the Liverpool way"

Dalglish ended Liverpool's six-year wait for a trophy with Carling Cup success, but they failed to deliver in the Premier League.
League glory is the aim for Rodgers, but he has suggested it is likely to take some time for the pieces to fall into place.

"The challenge is immense, let's be under no illusion," he said. "But I certainly think that a club of our status and value to the football world can go again.

"It's going to take time. And whether it will be in my time, I'm not so sure. But I'm going to fight for my life to try to get this model of play that, hopefully, can change the history of the club.

"This is a club where trophies are what it has been about for many years. But, for me, running alongside that it's about putting in place a model to see the club grow. That is equally important. To build a group that challenges."

kenny did not need long to win a trophy again, Brendan will get this season alone if he fails badly in all cups and finishes out of top 6 IMO

I really like what he says ... Something tells me, miracles are around the corner. Fuck, I'm getting optimistic again. Where's a Suarez/Evra thread when you need one?

No he won't

Kenny was forced upon the owners because he did well I think his initial 6 months.

Theyve now appointed a man for the long haul

no he wont, he just needs to show that the team is making progress, its more complicated than league position, the team went backwards under kenny from the good work he did at the second half of the season when he was appointed

He'll be here for a long time. For us to compete we need CL footy pretty quickly. But I think the owners are working with 3-5 year plan, so we have a long term strategy in place.

We have probably spent 15-20 mill on hiring and firing staff this season. Thats a shame regarding the transfer budget. But with an improved finish in the league and some success in the EL, I can see us spending quite a bit next season.

We want a top 4 finish obvs and that has to be our goal. But a top 6 finish will be acceptable imho, if we see great improvement on the pitch and some success in the cups.

We finished 17 points behind 4th and 37 behind 1st, so he has got a job to do..

For that it's worth: I am one person removed from a 34 year old on the Swansea team. Ping me if you want verification. Rodgers called him (as he did all players) to wish him goodbye. Allegedly, Rodgers said he has been guaranteed *three years* to see through his vision, no matter what. I'll get more info if I can, but that was the gist of our 1 minute conversation yesterday while our kids were pulling out of us - and apparently, Spurs were also interested in Rodgers as well, he chose us, partly because we would give him the *time*. Take it for what it's worth, a friend of a friend.

No worries. I told him to pass on a message to Brendan. If we don't play with fancy wingers, I'm starting a Rodgers out thread..😉

There is no doubt that Rodgers is no short-term stop-gap. If he says 3 years then personally I'd say that would be about right .. so long as he's given the money and support to see it through. There could be no complaints then.

That said Rodgers needs to cool expectation, lower expectations = less pressure and hopefully time for the players to adapt to a new system before the media and fans become disgruntled. I'm still hopeful we'll have an impressive first season under him though ... with the caveat being he gets the 3-4 players he says he wants/needs.

There is no reason he should fail that badly though (unless he proves to be inept).

We have a good nucleus of players that want to play possession football and I don't see the shift in mentality being one that is so significant that we should accept a transition phase finishing in midtable.

Enough with the Hodgson-esque dampening of expectations.

We can (and most definitely should be able to) buy a few good attacking players that will ensure we finish in the top 6 with ease and hopefully start challenging for fourth in the near future.

I agree with all of this. A realistic and considered post. I have high hopes for Rodgers though. I hope he delivers sooner rather than later though.

Pardon ? 😱

He'll fail. And then we'll sack him. Because that's what we do these days. It's becoming the new "Liverpool" way.

I think, removing any red tinted specs for a mo, that nobody can reasonably deny that, suarez incident and injuries aside, last year we had an enormous amount of bad luck and we simultaneously vastly under-performed in too many games. If he can just get us back to a level of consistency and we do a bit of shooting practice, then we should be in the mix for a top 6-top 3 finish IMO. That, a visible improvement, and his far superior media presence means he will get longer than Kenny did.

In fairness to Brendan - he already said that we were quite unlucky last season. The football we played was for the most part very good. When you mention the Suarez incident - it upsets me becuase part of me blames Sir Alex for that whole saga - he knows deep inside that Suarez can do wonders for our team up front by himself almost, and forcing the issue to get him banned for 8 games was a stroke of genius for him, because he knew Kenny would find it really difficult without him in the side. One of the key messages that Kenny tried to instill into the players - is that LFC is about fucking winning, and despite coming close to the title under GH, and Rafa - I think what we lack is that final mental strength to win the league. We did a lot of things right last season, and thats why Brendan has already said that he does not need to sign so many players as he already has a good group of players to work with.

Indeed, I would say this is one of the best squads we've had in the last decade, and really if we don't push for top 4 then we're underachieving. I feel optimistic for the new season though 🙂

I would love a quick fix, and I would fucking love us to have a better season than Spurs and that little twat Sygurdsson.
If he wanted to join Spurs and they offered more money fair enough that's life, but I wish he would shut the fuck up about them being such a better option than us.
I think Brendan is playing things down and lowering expectations and rightly so.
If we keep the players we have and do add the likes of Dempsey, Borini and perhaps one other decent player, and start getting Sterling and Suso more involved the turn around might be quicker than we are being lead to believe.
We all know we under-performed in many areas last year, we had a huge drama which affected things badly psychologically and eight match ban to our best player and other key injuries. I honestly believe even if we maintained the status quo from the end of the season we would probably have improved our position significantly, but like last year fourth is not a wildly unrealistic target. Its between us, Spurs and Arse, both the latter have been weakened and lost their best player, Arsenal really were a one man team last year, and Spurs are going to struggle to get by without VdV (assuming he goes or is crocked) and Modric.

regards

You optimistic fool vlad!

But yeah, I complete agree. I'm confident of 10 points from the first 5
