Not that that's saying a lot. 😉

What do the FIFA rankings say about this?

According to the Echo, we're looking to bring a new coach in his place. Any rumblings?
When Kenny got the job there was lots of talk about Rush coming in
Well, as long as we get Zidane, I won't mind them drafting in Woody from 'Cheers'.

From 'The Liverpool Echo' (now printed in Wales) I want to get the EU to say it can't be called the Liverpool Echo, like Chedder Cheese and Cornish Pasties!

LIVERPOOL have parted company with assistant manager Sammy Lee.

The club declined to comment on reports about Lee's position today but the Echo understands the Reds legend is no longer part of their backroom staff.

Lee had been in the role since he was appointed by Rafa Benitez in May 2008.

The 52-year-old was kept on by Roy Hodgson last summer and had been working alongside boss Kenny Dalglish and new first team coach Steve Clarke since January.

Lee was a popular figure among both players and supporters and the reasons for his departure are unclear.

The former Bolton boss has already been linked with a swift return to coaching alongside Sam Allardyce at West Ham.

Lee joined Liverpool as an apprentice in 1975 and enjoyed a glittering playing career with the Reds.

The midfielder made 295 appearances between 1978 and 1986 and played in two European Cup winning sides.

He was invited by Graeme Souness to join the Anfield staff in 1993 as reserve team coach. His services were retained by both Roy Evans and Gerard Houllier, who promoted him to working with the first team.

Lee played a key role alongside Houllier as the Reds secured an unprecedented treble in 2001.

In 2004 he left Liverpool to take a full-time coaching role with England and a year later was appointed assistant boss to Allardyce at Bolton.

Lee had an unsuccessful short stint as Bolton boss in 2007 but returned to Anfield 12 months later when Benitez made him assistant manager.

In December 2008 he took charge of the Reds against Arsenal when Benitez was ill with kidney stones.

However, Lee has now moved on and Liverpool are expected to bring in a new coach to work alongside Dalglish and Clarke. The players return for pre-season training on Monday.

Those dissing Sammy Lee should remember that he once won the Liverpool FC Supporters Club’s Player of the Year poll, he was capped 14 times for Englsnd, and when he played for Osasuna he was voted the Spanish League midfielder of the year by Spanish fans. 🙂

All true. Does anyone diss him as a player though?

Lots don't seem rate him as a coach. I don't know personally. He seemed pretty highly rated a few years back. But if he is an average coach/manager then I wouldn't want him, regardless of how well he performed as a player.

The prophecy has come true

I'm going to start a 'Sammy Lee is a waste of space' rant. Every single post will be about it. You won't be able to respond that well because none of you know for sure what he DOES do. So whenever we lose I'll go 'Ha ha - I see Lee did feck all again. Well done Samuel!' Things like that. And when we win I'll argue it was in spite of that useless waste of a mini-me Sammy Lee. Oh, and I'll come up with some sort of schoolboy insult for all of you, too. This cunning plan is bound, in time, to get even quite reasonable posters to say 'Actually, he's got a point...'

*cough*

That Sammy Lee - what a ****! I suppose you Sammy lovers are so far up his tiny but fat arse you can't see it, but I can! He's SHIT!

He used to part own the Coconut Grove and got done for smashing some lad's legs in didn't he? I did wonder why footy players would get involved in all that nonsense and was pleasantly surprised when he ditched small time gangsterdom for coaching badges.

Very sad.
*can barely contain glee*
I love Sammy, part of my era of Liverpool but im convinced hes a fucking Jonah.

The title is ours.
I swear to God on the eve of a game at Filbert street in the late 90s, Sammy gave my 16 month old daughter a cuddle, realised she'd filled her nappy and announced "shit for luck". As i recall we lost 2-0 the next day.

I remember reading years ago, in one of those weekly fanzines that have probably gone out of business now, that Sammy Lee's favourite song was Heart and Soul by T'Pau.

This is for you Sammy:

T'Pau - Heart And Soul

I love them interviews where they reveal just how awful their lives are despite all that money.

I saw them live once, quite by accident. I had tickets to see Bryan Adams (pre Everything I Do, obv) and T'Pau were the support act and they sang Heart & Soul and the soon to be released China in my Hand. That's all I can remember. I was too far away to even know whether Carol Decker was hot or not. There was some debate at the time.

Sammy going to join Big Sam at West Ham.
We're signing some coach from Chelsea, Peter Clement.
Presumably someone Clarke knows and rates. Hopefully this is an indication that Clarke's here for the long haul.

Sad news.

Best of luck Sammy Lee.

Well, Sammy was part of the regime that brought in Jovanovic, Poulsen and Joke Hole!! 😉
He was also part of the management team that helped turn things around.

By leaving Jovanovic, Poulsen and Cole on the bench

Nobody gave a shit about him when he was here. Now everyone's all "Aww YNWA Sammy, true club lege...".

Pfft.

I remember seeing them at the Maysfield Leisure Centre in Belfast in about '88.

Took the day off school, went early to Belfast on the train and got right up the front against the barrier. Decker was alright for a Ginger.

Aaaaahhhh...... the late 80's.... Liverpool winning everything and lots of shite 80's bands in Belfast.

I think I saw Duran Duran, Level 42, Big Country, T'Pau & Def Leppard in the space if a year. Missed out on Frankie Goes To Hollwood, Spandau Ballet & The Housemartins though... oh & U2 ... Surprisingly.

Not sure about that. You don't often hear the praises sung for an assistant manager, especially when he is number 2 to Kenny Dalglish.

And anyone who truly understands the club and what it means to represent it will always have a place in their hearts for a guy who has given so much to the cause.

I've just re-read my post and it does sound like I'm having a pop at Ryan but that wasn't my intention. Hey ho.
